jummy: that breaking news right now, a winter weather advisory issued for tonight and in the last two hours. the national weather service issued a blizzard watch for the dmv ahead of the big snowstorm headed our way. let's get right to doug hill who is tracking every aspect of this storm. he joins us now with the latest on these models. doug: we are under a blizzard

watch. it is possible, not under a blizzard warning. sunshine outside the weather center. tonight, some snow. we are under a winter weather advisory. that shaded in purple, the metro area is under a winter weather advisory. that will arrive 7:00, 8:00. a little sunshine now. just to the west come a cold front end area of low pressure and up to bring the snow in here tonight. today, when i was coming across the bridge, potomac is iced over. every flake will stick here. the snow developing with the system, the cold front moving threat 8:00. it will quickly clear, the sunshine returns tomorrow. anywhere from .1 inch to an inch and a half. we look ahead to friday

afternoon, friday night, saturday, saturday afternoon, saturday night into sunday morning, a blizzard watch. been forecasting weather on tv for 13 years and have never seen a blizzard watch issued two days in advance for this area here. , similarifference snowfall totals, but we will have high winds closer today -- driving impossible at times. friday, the snow moving in during the afternoon hours as the storm intensifies. it hits the coast and gets even stronger. that is when the heaviest snow will fall through the day saturday. saturday night, not ending until sunday. the initial forecast, 1-2 feet of snow is a possibility. that will be friday into saturday and sunday. take a look at this right

here. potomac already icing over. unbelievable. we are still just two days out from the big storm. there is a lot to do to make sure everything is prepared. sam is live in northwest d.c.. the mayor just announced the city storm plans. this press conference wrapped up happen hour ago. is says her biggest concern city residents losing power. the city is able to move snow, but they don't have much control when it comes to losing electricity. it is a fast-moving storm, it will dump a lot of snow, heavy snow. she fears the lines could be affected and that is her biggest concern. the mayor and her teams are coming up with a plan. they will formulate it for the rest of the day today and tomorrow morning and read that plan tomorrow morning at 11:15. 800 people in the city on standby right now to help with

snow removal. the city has also called in the national guard. they will use a specialized humvees to reach hard to reach areas if it is needed. 39,000 tons of salt also ready to go. for the first time ever, senior citizens and the disabled will be able to dial 311 if they need someone to come out and shovel their properties. snow,n it is cold and people are shut in, there's the possibility of power outages. it is more than just the nicety to look in on a neighbor. it becomes a necessity. we are asking everybody to look in on their neighbors. more than 2000 people have already volunteered and signed up for that program. if you're interested, you can go to the city's website. it will give you a free shovel. march, 200,000

i did not know what it was, but this was a tough water main break for cruise. it broke out around 7:00 yesterday evening. it was not until 7:00 this morning that they were finally able to find that break. things looking a lot nicer than they were this morning. you don't see the ice we saw this morning. you had closed lanes, slick conditions and then of course, the hard to find water main break. they were closing down the street altogether at one point. it usually takes between six and eight hours to get it all done. take a listen to how one commuter tried to get work as money. >> traffic getting and was backed up to telegraph road. it was difficult to get here. took about 25 minutes for a normally 10 minute commute. had seen us earlier this morning, all of this was stopped with traffic.

they are wrapping up just about now. we were worried this would go into the evening hours. they should be wrapping up in about an hour or so. traffic should be wide open. things should go pretty smoothly. the southbound lanes will get the evening commute. that is looking good as welker. fingers crossed that we don't have any other problems. well.t is looking good as we now want to get over to jamie sullivan who joins us with a check of the rest of the roadways this noon. jamie: it will be right around 1:00 that they are scheduled to reopen north patrick drive right between king street and cameron street. we do have the center lane blocked. the other lanes are open. some construction work northbound to 95 just before malcolm x., right lane blocked because of that.

the county man with gunshot wounds. there is no word on a suspect or a possible motive right now. turning to the war on terror. claimingtani taliban responsible believe for this morning's deadly attack at the university. 20 people were killed and 60 others injured. four gunmen stormed the university campus. they began breaking down doors to shoot at students. the witnesses heard several explosions. the man suspected of heading up this attack is the same man who led a taliban attack on a school 2014.t war in december of a professor at kent state university under investigation by the fbi for alleged ties to isis. the student newspaper broke the story after its ne editor was

a look outside right now. this is in laurel, 26 degrees. it will be cold and stay cold at or below freezing the next several days. for most of the area come everything we see will come in the form of snow. clouds increasing through the day in response to an approaching system to the west. an inch or more through the metro area. with the ground called in air cold, it will cause some slick spots pretty quickly. when he at reagan national, 17 and pittsburgh. -- 29. this big storm will pour even more cold air into the region here. this satellite and radar highlighted areas of snow stretching to tennessee. the disturbance and cold front moving eastward. that will bring us our light snow tonight.

winter weather advisory, totally unrelated to the main event friday night and saturday night. dusting of snow on the roadways and sidewalks. it will clear out overnight and we will be back to sunshine for the day tomorrow. closer to two inches as you get to the southeast. postedard watch has been , goes into effect early afternoon hours friday, continues to relate saturday night -- continues into late saturday night. point come if the storm develops as expected, these watches will be upgraded to warnings. this is a possibility 48 hours down the road. make plans. though it will be a very high impact event.

how high impact? hours and hours of barry heavy snow and high wind. airports are closed, driving is just about impossible, that will be from late friday night overnight through saturday morning through saturday midday and maybe a touch longer. there are some things we don't know. there is no confidence that we are in position right now to say that by the time the storm ends, we will see 1-2 feet of snow widespread across the area. lots to prepare for, plenty of time to do that. they warm up next week. sunday, clears off. in the 40's on monday and tuesday. the weather team, we are all over this. we will continue to update you on social media. this is potentially a very big deal. the panicky stuff. we've seen big storms here
