county, stafford, southern maryland, under the blizzard warning until 6:00 in the morning sunday. this may cancel early as we move through the overnight. still going to deal with a lot of blowing snow and gusty wind. live doppler radar, most of the snow has come to an end. we may have pockets of snow flurries, but hard to disseminate because of the wind that continues to blow. northern montgomery county, frederick county, loudoun county, if you look at the street like, you will probably notice snowflakes, but that is generally blowing snow at this point. any additional accumulations drifting will likely become a problem overnight. why is the snow cutting off so quickly? the low pressure off the coast continues to move towards the east, northeast, away from our area. that is why things clear out for us. this is the back edge over here.
11:05 pm
once this is out of here, skies begin to clear, and improving conditions will be on the way. is definitely good news because we broke the record for daily snowfall at bwi marshall, the number two record at dulles. inches.n national, 17.8 we will talk about that in a few minutes from the belfort furniture weather center. leon: let's stick with the big story of the day. you have been hearing it over and again, stay off the roads. the conditions have gotten so bad at the dark that frederick county plows have been pulled off the roadways until sunrise tomorrow. and 270 are my 70 completely shut down. alison: joce sterman is an mobile track 7 with the latest on the conditions. what are you seeing? joce: as you mentioned, the maryland,s all over virginia, d.c. strongly encouraging to stay off the roads. there at 270 north of

beltway, it is no longer encouraging you, it is a flat-out stop right here, turn around and head back south. maryland state police are blocking points of access to 270 heading towards 70, frederick county, a rare move, something the governor felt he had to do because of the conditions. as a result, the only things getting through our plow trucks, contracted plow trucks. everybody else is being turned away if they have ignored the signs before this. there are signs clearly stating this on 495, ignore them if you choose, you only get to hear. we spoke earlier tonight with the county executive's communications person to find out why this decision was made. >> the roads are drifting with the high wind and starting to ice up and we are having issues with trucks being stuck. for the safety of all the drivers we will allow them to
11:07 pm
pull off, get some well-deserved sleep, and they will be back on the roads by 7:00 a.m. these guys are going to be on the road for the next few hours, keeping people from accessing 270. this is a safety issue. back to you in the studio. alison: let's show you the conditions in one of the hardest hit areas. leon: richard reeve is live in ashburn. people are getting stuck all over, even service vehicles. rich? inside ofeon, we are one of the plow trucks with donnie, a driver. he is trying to help his buddy pull his blade out. it got busted by the chain. tell us what you are trying to do. trying to get the blade to where it will operate. it's not comparable right now to move the snow. richard: looks like they are
11:08 pm
trying to line it up to fix it, reattach it? >> yep. yep. richard: a tough night, huh? >> a tough two days. richard: you've done a lot of these? >> 20 years. richard: they are trying to realign the blade, fix the chain, get it moving again. we have seen this all night long. they have had their blades broken, hydraulic lines broken, chains broken. it will be a long night for a lot of these folks. back to you guys. alison: good luck to them. leon: we feel for those guys. alison: difficult work. jay korff has been in alexandria all day, at the scene of water main breaks and shoveling efforts. where do things stand right now in alexandria? wildit really has been a

day. earlier the day, these giant front end loaders were clearing off the street. this is washington street behind me, which the plow trucks have done a remarkable job of clearing. they have to for public safety reasons. but look at this side road. this is jefferson street. a plow has not touched it. look out deep it is, nearly up to my knees. as night descended on northern virginia, so did the wind and snow. as it has for so many hours. relentless in its fall from the sky. visibility. even if you think it's shallow, it's very deep. car sit iness solitude, imprisoned by the walls of white. plow trucks, odding
11:10 pm
the streets were opposed under the darkness of the great blizzard of 2016. >> only the big trucks are getting by. mike jones had no intention of resting tonight. his fourth time out today to tackle snow that continues to pile up. >> just trying to keep up with us know a little bit. streets are not a safe substitute for sidewalks. despite that danger, curious or stir crazy pedestrians walked desolate roads to witness a storm the likes of which they may never see again. >> wanted to come out and see what it was all about. [laughing] dig is driversig having to unearth their vehicles. i really feel sorry for the owner of this jeep wrangler. the pulldown's that close the windows were not closed before the storm, so literally feet and

feet of snow are inside this vehicle. i cannot imagine the damage that has occurred because -- well, good luck getting in there. jay korff, abc 7 news. leon: i think that is a major fail. alison: that is awful. probably out of town. leon: right now, mobile track 7 is checking the snow-covered streets. alison: there is a long road ahead when it comes to getting the snow cleared out. abc 7 is your h leon: now let's head into the

district. we have seen a mixed reaction to the store. alison: a lot of people dreading it, staying inside, others venturing outside to get the fresh freezing air. some bars and restaurants have
11:14 pm
stayed open, as stephen tschida knows firsthand. he is at logan circle. how was it looking tonight? stephen: festive. the snow hasn't let up, the wind has died down. vermontnews, down avenue, there is a car stuck. a lot of people are getting stuck in the snow today. digging out prove to be a real challenge for a lot of people. some of these drivers not so snow savvy. here is what some of the people had to say about what it was like tonight when they ventured out. people can walk, but when you get down here, there's no place to what. > >> i see more skiers and dogs walking around and people than cars. >> the snow is coming from the side and down. you do not know what your head.
11:15 pm
now at least you can walk. i think it is winding down. it appears the blizzard is winding down, but the work going on down vermont avenue, that digging out, tomorrow that is what a lot of people will be doing all across the region, certainly with this thick blanket of snow. back to you. leon: that's incredible. alison: it is. another car spinning out, every single live shot we go to. if you drive, chances are you will get stuck. steve: my most memorable event of this storm was jeff goldberg's live shot last night with the car doing doughnuts. you can see a white car behind it that was getting really close. and jeff was really close. said, camerasf attract interesting individuals. that was my favorite line of the night. we hadwe had the pandas,
11:16 pm
the milk cow, everything. this low pressure, known as the blizzard, has moved out. looking down pennsylvania avenue, even though it is windy, the snow has pretty much come to an end. anything falling from the sky at this point is very limited and is only going to improve through the overnight. 28 degrees at reagan national, the wind out of the north that just 20. the dew point level is low, the windchill is chilly, downright cold, 15 degrees. this map, it looks like a lot is going on, but here is d.c., the district at 17.8 inches at reagan national. the bull's-eye, just to the west, leesburg, winchester coming in at 32 to 33 inches of snow. uth, further so
11:17 pm
fredericksburg cap 13, rehoboth beach had three inches. damascus,l focus, 29 29.2 at bwi, making it the largest snowfall on record at bwi marshall. had, the last time they snow that much, almost that much, was 2003, with 26.8 inches. the snowfall totals at dulles, this is the second most on record. 2010, six years ago, 32.4 inches. reagan national airport, there has been a lot of chat about the snow total, coming in at 17.8. that ties with number four. the reason there has been a lot of chat is there is a question about whether the officials at reagan national measured the snow correctly. we will hear about that in the coming days, but with the note
11:18 pm
since everything is gone on today. the blizzard warning still in effect including the district and everything in red. i have the feeling this may come down early. to the west, earlier this evening, all these counties were pink, but not the case right now. as the storm rapidly advances off to the north and east. the back edge of moisture now drifting off to the east, and that will continue as we head through the overnight. willonfident many of you like up tomorrow morning to a beautiful sunrise, all the way bright sunrise because it will be so white, so snowy in terms of the reflection. just a few snow flurries in manassas, war and 10, marshall, southern maryland not much going on. the heaviest of the snow has come to an end. prince george's county, bowie, queen anne, walkerville, no snow. not a lot at this point, a much different situation from 24
11:19 pm
hours ago. late tonight, early tomorrow morning, we will see the skies begin to clear and the sunshine will return tomorrow. then we will start the big melting process across the washington metro. that will happen tomorrow and into the upcoming work week. don't want to say school week yet, because i don't how many schools will be open. wednesday to 15 to 25, the windchill factor makes it feel like teens, lower 20's. the next three days, 37 the high tomorrow, 42 monday, 47 tuesday. about a 30%, 40% chance of showers. the temperatures above freezing during the day, at night we have cold nights below freezing, allowing for slick spots on sidewalks and roadways. alison: thank you. right now, the maryland department of transportation is
11:20 pm
hard at work. they have a big job ahead to make the roads safe again, and roz plater is live in district heights with their efforts. roz? heard steve rudin say something about sunshine, so i want to look ahead since we appear to be on the verge of turning the corner. the latest information we have from the department of public works and transportation ofdquarters, there is a team transportation workers here at this snow command center who have been here around the clock. from their vantage point of keeping a full force of crews on the roads to manage the roads, they think that has been working to a large degree, despite some bumps. a have had high wind, causing whiteout conditions, which butrferes with the work, the work continues, and now we have to manage the expectations of folks who live in the county. the question everybody wants to know, how soon can we see roads cleared in our neighborhood?
11:21 pm
is expected to come out, which will help with some of the melting. but it's going to be a couple of days. we would like to emphasize to ts in terms of their expectations, in terms of the residential areas, we recommend 12 hours after the d before we are in the residential areas. off that is a long ways because we still have snow coming down, but that is the expectation and the window of time before they can start the process. how soon they can clear the secondary roads is a factor on a lot of things going forward, including school closings, folks getting back to work, roads reopening, and things getting back to normal. live in district heights, roz plater, abc 7 news. leon: thank you, roz.
11:22 pm
continuing coverage is ahead. alison: stay connected with the abc 7 stormwatch team around the clock.
11:23 pm
11:24 pm
leon: we learned one thing around here, we do not have to go very far to find a snow story. we had been watching them unfold right outside of our building. we have seen stuck cars, people folks, cows, pandas, trying to find groceries, you name it. alison: people dressed as cows and pandas. kimberly suiters found most of these interesting people and she has the latest. people rightcrazy
11:25 pm
now, people are sensible and in bed. d.c. is not really known as a winter sports town, but i'm trying my best to make it that way. look at this video from this morning. the only time that i can say that actually got to ski down to work. it was my fastest commute ever. then we ran across cross-country skiers all over town, having an absolute great time. great snowpack. we saw one guy carrying his snowboard. we ran into one guy on his bike, but it was frozen over. all of the sports people just tackling each other in the snow and having a wonderful time. i think that we got it in by the sports winter bug a little bit. leon, this is for you. i don't get to ski home because it's uphill from rosslyn, but i will ski this tiny little mound and hope that i don't break my leg this very last time on our coverage tonight.
11:26 pm
the blizzard 2016. i'm determined to get you out here, leon. alison: we should not say break a leg. leon: no, no. the one time we cannot say that in this business. alison: all right, good job! yay! leon: that was worth coming to work today. alison: she was waiting to do that. leon: she could not wait to get outside. alison: she looks so comfortable in this weather.
11:27 pm
11:28 pm
steve: a quick recap of the blizzard warning that remains in effect. this will likely come down earlier than 6 a.m. the low pressure moves off to the north and east. any remaining snow, the clouds gradually decrease, then we will be waking up to a lot of
11:29 pm
sunshine across the dmv and temperatures above freezing. the melting will begin tomorrow.
