we have team coverage of the efforts to return to normal. we will check in with all the reporters in a few minutes. metro is taking big steps to get back to regular service. already 77 of the 91 rail stations are open. getting back to 100% will take some time. stephen tschida begins tonight from the storm watch team coverage. what is the latest? stephen: maureen, metro is making headway as far as getting back to full service. earlier today, limited underground service. but as the day progressed, it expanded above ground to all the stations. not quite all the way there yet. but real progress. snow removal efforts paying off big-time. >> that takes up to 79 open stations of the 91. >> also restored on the green line. >> i am excited. i have been in the howls for

two days. getting low on food. stephen: on the other line, service extended dramatically by midafternoon. >> get out and i went to the smithsonian. that was cool. >> progress for metro bus as well. it will shift from life line service to severe weather to greatly expand across metro area. >> 29 roots. 26 in virginia. 26 in maryland. stephen: metro bus stops tonight and will resume tomorrow as early as 3:30 in the morning. another note. the free rides with the restoration or the expansion of service the free rides will come to an end. reporting live, stephen tschida, abc7 news. leon: thank you. a scene we have watched play out across the area. neighborhoods buried in snow. not enough plows to be everywhere at once. to get the folks dug out.

northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg tracking the roads in northern virginia. you have been all over the place today and over the weekend as well. what are the scenes this afternoon? jeff: the primary roads are in great shape. but the residential streets like this one in arlington are not in good shape at all and have not seen plows. some residents have seen work with the shovel and the driveway and the sidewalks but say if the county won't do it, we will do it ourselves. >> today it was easy to find people digging out but tougher to spot a snowplow on a side street. >> it's crazy, you know? we need to be dug out. >> it's disappointing. jeff: on north galveston, the only clearing done has been done by residents like jennifer dixon. >> we haven't seen one truck come through here. not even one plow gone through. this is all foot traffic. >> arlington officials say crews have been working 24/7.

all main and the secondary roads are in good shape. next up are the residential streets. >> we are asking for patience and understanding. the crews are working around the clock to do this. this is a priority for us. >> in falls church, most roads are cleared or passible. zack miller driveway looks spotless after days of hard work. >> are you warm? wearing shorts. >> if you're shoveling it can get warm. not my news outfit. >> the fairfax county operations center has been going nonstop since last week just like vdot. they deployed equipment to first get the freeways and the main roads. >> a big focus on the neighborhoods starting today into the rest of the week. >> from the roads to the roofs. there is still much work to be done. >> it's all good. getting it off the road. at the end of the big dig cannot come soon enough. >> i'm tired. i want to go home.

>> a lot of people feel that way. on north galveston, they are digging out the vehicle of one of the neighbors to allow her to get on the main road. carlin springs. the narrow older streets are difficult in arlington and alexandria. the trucks have a hard time getting in here. they have to bring in front-loaders and it can be a proesses. the residential streets are between to 30 to 40% cleared. both local entities are hoping that all the streets cleared or passible by tomorrow night or wednesday morning. live in arlington, jeff goldberg, abc7 news. leon: all right. thank you, jeff. cities and the counties in virginia and maryland, d.c. has the hands full of clearing the streets. one place that will not plow are the alley ways. so says the property owners and the residents must clear their own spaces between the buildings where a lot of people parked. 350 miles of the allies throughout the city. maureen: abc7's maryland bureau chief brad bell spent

the past two hours driving the area roads checking on the condition. he is in mobile track 7. brad, where are you now? brad: well, maureen, we are still here in northern virginia. in the arlington jared. we talked about the heavy equipment was a surprise. and loss of lanes was a surprise. this street has never been plowed. people matted it down be the s.u.v.'s. some of them have shoveled out. still a lot left to do. but the surprise you get. we are doing fine down this road. then all of a sudden boom! take a look at this. it is unplowed. in fact, there are piles of snow from those who shoveled cars out and placed it in the middle of the street. that was a surprise. the first time we came down here it looked okay. then you saw you can't go any

farther. we are backing out now. rich chamberlain driving the car here. that is one of the challenges. jeff goldberg was talking about it in the neighborhoods, some of the streets that haven't been plowed. surprise is the word of the day i would say when it comes to driving. out on the main roads, you will be moving along. you think you are doing fine. then all of a sudden you come around a corner and there is no travel lane. the merge lane is gone. it's a piece of heavy equipment. even on a street like this, you have got to pay attention. the conditions do change foot to foot, block to block. second to second. interesting out here. beautiful. people seem to enjoy it. still a mess.

leon: well, of the snow we are digging out by the truckload has to go somewhere. in the district that somewhere is r.f.k. stadium. parking lot number seven to be specific. organizers expect 200 trucks per hour to dump snow there. round the clock. barriers have been set up to prevent contaminant in the snow from running in the anacostia river as has happened in the past. maureen: as long as the d.c. schools remain closed the district will continue to serve breakfast and lunch to students. meals will be available at ten locations across the city. many students rely on the federal assistance for two of

maureen: the dig-out from the 2016 blizzard continues to claim snowplows. this fire was caught on video in the chevy chase section of the district. the plow driver escaped before the vehicle was swallowed in flames. leon: that is a bad day at work. if for roads, take it slow and avoid driving at all in you can. mobile track 7 has been out showing buried side streets and even main roads as well with only a single narrow lane. we are out there patrolling the roads to see what is out there to help keep you safe. check of the roads for the entire area. jamie sullivan on traffic watch. she has been for 72, 191 hours. jamie: not too bad. this right here is a pretty cool visual. i want to talk to you about staying off of the roads. this is why. we need to let the crews do their job. these are the bobcats. this is on lynn in rosslyn. they are pushing the snow off to the side. as you will see, we have many

cars who pop up behind them. and want to get by. this is why we are encouraging you still to stay at home and let the crews do their jobs. let's move to talk about the closure that will go into place in under two hours. they did reopen the g.w. parkway northbound. it's currently open. but from spout run to the beltway it will close at 8:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. tomorrow. hearing from people about one big issue. if you are traveling to get on the beltway and you have to merge on, this is anywhere really. there is no merge lane. so all of a sudden if you are driving like you normally do and you get on the interstate you are just in the middle of traffic. people going 50 and 60 miles per hour. please be very aware that there are no merge lanes. almost anywhere traveling on the interstate. need to be careful. that is a look at traffic. back to you. leon: all right. maureen: thank you, jamie. abc7 crews found some people in the neighborhood aren't waiting for plows to get rid of the snow for them. our john gonzalez found this

group of teenagers clearing a cul-de-sac near silver spring and say they hope to connect the snowed in neighborhood to route 29 which we are told has been plowed. they have to remove 300 yards of snow. that is a lot of snow. a lot of snow. leon: for a while there was enough snow to cover tuition at college. but we are seeing the snowed in cars as well. maureen: amy found plenty of examples of neighbors helping neighbor as we look at the historic blizzard. >> get in there. keep doing your job. reporter: this isn't dan's job but he is looking out for the neighbors. >> i do it because it's a job

that has to get done. reporter: digging his way to the storm drain. >> end of the trench. reporter: in a neighborhood where everyone is willing to do their part. he is looking ahead and looking out for others who live on the street. he is hoping when the snow melts, it has a pathway to the gutter so he doesn't plug the street. >> think about it. the temperature drops below freezing you have an ice skating rink. reporter: he is in the not the only one reaching out. >> we are digging out. reporter: lisa says the other end of the road is still snowed in. >> the end of my street is like this. you cannot see the pavement. >> thanks to the maybing lending a shovel and -- neighbors lending a shovel and work to keep the street from icing over. for now, they are making the best of it. amy, abc7 news.

fog. the capital beltway, this shouldn't amount to a lot. 27 to 34 for overnight low. mostly cloudy skies. dense fog to be on the lookout for. you can see the visibility to less than a quarter of a mile in many locations. the wake-up temperatures tomorrow are warmer than early this morning. when we were in the single digits. around freezing at bethesda and college park and upper marlboro. around 30 in manassas. lower 30's in leesburg. heading through the overnight hours to the day tomorrow. it's well off to the west of us. approaching from the west. we will move through the dinnertime hour, 5:00 or 6:00, wildly scattered showers moving across the region. it looks like the rush hour commute won't be affected at this point. heading to early morning wednesday, maybe, maybe a few scattered snowshowers across southern maryland. not looking at anything major
