three in prince george's county schools are closed tomorrow. we have a full list running at the bottom of your screen. you can find the entire list on our website wjla.com. some melting happening now as temperatures get into the 40's today. we do have to keep our eyes on some potential showers. let's get to brian van de graaff with a look at our forecast. brian: rain showers late in the day so no concerns with wintry weather. i want to talk about what is happening. take a look at these numbers outside and there is warm air trying to nudge in. 45, downtown. 51 in fredericksburg. we could see temperatures near 50 despite gray skies three at have that warm southwesterly wind. from cardinal ridge elementary this morning, that is the parking lot. some clouds make an effort to come into the driveway. they do a pass and leave. i do not see fairfax county

school tomorrow. just looking at that. freezing rain early to the north . minor through the afternoon a couple of spotty rain showers. we stay above freezing through the afternoon. temperatures, mid 40's. mid to upper 40's as we continue to see the mild air push and. cooler for later in the week. .e will talk about the weekend a nice weekend on the way and we all deserve it after the blizzard of 2016. jummy: road crews are still out clearing the roadways today. crews closing some roads to try to get that worked on. let's go to jamie sullivan with a check on traffic. jamie: we are seeing areas where it is clearing out. let's start off with the big picture look at the capital beltway. a lot of green, some areas of red. what you need to know, we of rock creek parkway blocked in both directions between m street

and beach drive. that is for snow removal scheduled for about another 1.5 hours. we are seeing a lot of side roads and they are not making it official. you have to have patience today and wait for that. in the outer loop we are in the single digits approaching a snow removal area. a live look near colesville road . this is why you have slow traffic. it is not so much the main lanes they are clearing out. they are pushing that snow further past the shoulder so everyone can get through without an issue. our speed are pretty good. it is going to be a lot of the side roads that are clearing out . the biggest issue we have seen so far is going to be those merge lanes. brianne carter, i know you were talking about this earlier. are you still seeing the issue with those merge lanes? brianne: absolutely. not just the merge lanes, it is also any of the turn lanes you maybe would have used on secondary streets. those are not available to you

either. we are in mobile track 7 in old town alexandria. the bumping us, about six to eight inches of snow on some of these roads. as you get to more traveled roads where we have seen some of that traffic move through, we are starting to see more pavement as you move into those areas. is different wherever you are traveling in terms of what you might see in road conditions. we also saw a number of police blocking some streets and a plow has not been able -- that a plow has not been able to get down yet. this is one of the situations. a side street here in old town alexandria. a plow has not touched any of this. we still have nearly two feet of snow that remains in the center of the roadway here. drivers are trying to plow -- dig out the cars with shovels. the road has not been plowed.

just down the street, a different situation. one lane of traffic, really able to get by as we start to see cars in front of us. we will pull over and let that traffic get by. many other still remain blocked. those travel lanes that are going to be impacted by this, all along the main thoroughfare, just be reminded that those clouds will be vessels plows will be out -- those plows will be out to get snow up and off the roads so stay to the left. jummy: what a mess? thanks for that report. crews were out in full force trying to clear the roadways. same sweeney has been in northwest all morning were crews have been loading the snow on the dump trucks. sam: there is a flurry of activity in northwest near dupont circle at 19th and l.

this snow pile is one of thousands around the district. crews are doing their best to remove this snow. you can see this truck, they are loading those every few minutes. at this site alone there are 45 dump trucks that have been working 24 hours a day to get this snow out of the district. we received 24 inches of snow, 4400 miles of roadway. a monumental task for these crews in the city has been doing a fantastic job. today they brought in crews from connecticut and indiana with specialized equipment to help this process. this has been a major operation. the city says they are on schedule today. the goal is to get the downtown area cleaned up and the federal government can open again tomorrow. city government is open today. as you can imagine with these roads blocked, many roads have been reduced to one to two lanes.

it would have been a nightmare if all of the businesses and the government were open today. they are working around the clock on all of the streets to get them cleared are you some people have reached out to me over social media and they say my side street where i live, my car is buried. why have they not plowed my street yet. they are working to get to each and every street but it is going to take a lot of time. they say they will be removing tiles like this -- piles like this all the way into next week. once they get these piles into , they will remain at the stadium until they melt. officials say that snow may not melt until the end of may. if your road has not been plowed yet, have patience. they are working to get there. jummy: thank you. the side roads were big problems in many areas are you while crews work, there are many streets that have not seen a

plow yet. john gonzalez is live with a look at the work that still needs to be done in some neighborhoods. this no outlet sign in aspen hill, maryland has never been truer. we are here in this neighborhood that has not seen a plow. of course the blizzard is long gone but we are still feeling the effects. hundreds if not thousands of families are still trapped inside their homes in the d.c. area. not a plow but private contractors have come by. they were not very successful. they go for 200 feet and they have to stop is the problem is this snow has been here for so long it is starting to get packed and difficult to remove. our storm watch yardstick showing about 16 inches on worton road which means not a lot of it has melted. resident in the county are growing more frustrated. on hallowell, we were over

there. no plows. the streets under snow. the montgomery county department of transportation website shows neighborhoods like those are in the process of being plowed. residents say that is not the case. back in aspen hill this is ron and susie. two residence here. i found you trying to walk out to belfry road. >> i want to find a pass. call somebody and they would take me to the store. i did find a path. you guys found me. john: susie, kind of difficult to walk out here, walk the dog. what has it been like the last several days? >> we are thankful we did not lose power. we are ready to get out. john: as we show you the snow once again on merton road, you would never think -- there is a road. the county saying they are working aggressively and asking

folks to be more patient. they have 1000 pieces of equipment but they also have 5000 miles of road in montgomery county and they are trying to get to it. hopefully they will be able to dig these folks out soon. jummy: cleanup continuing as loudoun county digs out of the blizzard aftermath. county officials held a press conference to give residents an update on snow removal efforts. >> we realize that some of your streets may not be plowed but the good news is this. what ddot is trying to do is have one path through all of your neighborhoods by tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m. it does not mean that the streets will be clear. it does not mean they might be passable for two cars. was one ofoun county the hardest hit areas with an estimated 36 inches of snow. a asked residents not to call until tomorrow after 6:00 a.m. to report unplowed streets. in alexandria the snow emergency

indiana. actually, we are expecting another to arrive today as well. the district has moved a lot of snow. it has been reported, five cubic feet fell on washington, d.c. the removal operation continues. let me say a word about sidewalks. we are very grateful to all the d.c. residents with clear their sidewalks. even more grateful to the volunteers who helped senior citizens and people with disabilities clear their sidewalks as well. as our kids go back to school tomorrow, it is imperative that all residential sidewalks are clear. let me also say a thing about commercial sidewalks. business owners, you are required by law to remove snow from your sidewalks. we are beyond the time limit that you were supposed to do so. i had the opportunity to walk

down connecticut avenue yesterday. in one block there were two property owners who had failed to clear their sidewalks. we will begin to enforce the commercial sidewalk snow clearing provisions of the law. you must get out and remove snow from your sidewalks immediately. let me give everybody a reminder of some of the responsibilities we all have with regard to clearing the snow. government,ed, the on our roads and public buildings. making sure they are accessible. access to ourre metro station is available as well. the residence are responsible for the snow in front of their homes. we ask or your help in looking out for the fire hydrants and the sewer drains.

try to remove the snow from in front of the drains. if you live close to a bus stop, we can really use your help as well in removing and clearing a path from the bus stop to the street. i think everybody knows, but let me remind you, the district does not clear snow from alleys. that is why we are dependent on mother nature to help those melt. many neighbors who ban together to clear and entrance to the alleys. the snow emergency will be lifted tomorrow. wednesday, 6:30 p.m. you may not park on a snow emergency route for the rest of the day. tomorrow through 6:30 p.m. when the snow emergency is lifted, so are the taxicab commission rules that affect fares. the snow emergency will remain in effect all day today and all

day tomorrow through 6:30 p.m. let me remind drivers, do not park your car illegally. that includes parking it kind of in the middle of the street next to the snow bank. no only legal space is more than 12 inches from the curb. we need to be able to move traffic and parked cars are taking of a lane it will make for a difficult commute. this is an infraction enforceable by a ticket. everybody, only part in legal spaces. let me thank my team, all of bc government and -- all of d.c. government and the contractors that have been working nonstop to help us recover from this blizzard. let me turn to director gelbart for an operational update. >> thank you. d.c.'s director of

emergency management agency. we are into 48 hours of snow clearing. we have gotten all of our major arterials in good shape but we still have to pick up the snow in the curb lanes. all of those that are trying to park 12 inches from the curb is not from a snow bank the rule. it is 12 inches from the curb. do not park in front of the snow banks that are along the side of our major routes. we need the public's help with that. as the mayor said, all of our major arterials are looking good. we have teams out saturating the sectors within the snow zones and if you have a question on where your snow zone is, you can dc.gov.now. we are targeting areas where we have not spent a lot of time in or that have more snow in them. we are setting our strike teams

out today. some of them were out last night in the areas really getting down into the residential's and getting those cleared out. that operation will continue through today and tonight. we are monitoring progress every two hours on where we are to ensure that we have no areas in the city we have not touched and that are not passable. we are working hard to get the entire city passable as fast as we can. we are hauling snow, removing snow. we ask for the residents' help in that. as schools go back into session, if you have shoveled your walk, thank you. if you have not, please do it now. if you have not created a curb cut, when you take through the snow bank in front of your house that may have been plowed up, we ask you to do that. accesslows people to those areas you have nicely .hoveled in front of your areas that includes businesses as well

as residents. those are the major updates we have for today. let's see if we have questions. >> you said you were enforcing commercial sidewalk -- what about the residential? [indiscernible] mayor bowser: we said from the beginning of this event we will not be issuing tickets to residents. we have had a tremendous amount of cooperation both from the property owners themselves and volunteers. we have also signed up a lot of people. i think over 4000 people who have claimed exemption from the sidewalk shoveling law. we are going to collect and look at our process and be informed by that for the next snow event. >> you look at several schools -- a block away

residential neighborhoods were kids are walking, though sidewalks -- mayor bowser: i'm not sure which blocks you are talking about. we know that we will not have 100% down to the pavement on every sidewalk or every intersection. we feel very strongly that the kids will have a reasonably clear way to get to school from their neighborhoods. certainly, around the block that surrounds the school. for those people -- what is your message to those who are frustrated? mayor bowser: i think director gelbart explained -- director geldart explained where we are now.

getting to areas that have not seen enough attention. we are doing it methodically. we have a lot of snow. we are getting to every part of the city that needs more attention a soon as possible. jummy: that is d.c. mayor muriel bowser. a few highlights from her speech. the snow emergency will be lifted tomorrow at 6:30. the taxi fare will also be dropped. the districtnts in to shovel in front of their homes and sidewalks and they say the are bringing in more equipment from other states including indiana to help with the cleanup. you can watch the rest of this on news channel 8 live right now. before we head out let's get a check of the forecast with brian. brian: warming up a bit. already in the mid and upper 40's. a sprig or rain shower but nothing too big.

it moves through by tomorrow afternoon. we should break into sunshine and start to see skies clearing and it should be a pleasant day. with good sunshine we will continue the melting. temperatures well into the 40's looking culpable for the day despite the clouds. have your bell is handy for light -- have your umbrella handy for light showers. thursday and friday, a touch cooler but some sunshine to help with melting. by sunday we could be pushing 50's, maybe mid 50's by next week. a nice pattern for melting. tonight, a few rain showers. jummy: 55. what a difference a week makes. you can watch more of the mayor's news conference on news channel 8. we will see you for abc 7 news at 4:00. have a great day.
