>> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning, everyone. >> we do say good morning to you. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm reena ninan. >> >> we're going to begin with the breaking news out of oregon where one person has been killed in a shoot-out between the fbi and members of the armed group holding a federal wildlife refuge. >> we're getting word that the victim has been identified as robert lavoy finicum who had been acting as a spokesperson for this group. eight people have been arrested including the leader amman bundy. abc's alex stone has the late details. >> reporter: the take-down did not happen at the wildlife refuge where militia members where is holed up for three weeks. instead, oregon state police and federal agents moved in as group leader amman bundy and his followers were on the move apparently driving to a meeting with locals. police conducted a traffic stop

on oregon's highway 395, pulling over the vehicle bundy was riding in. law enforcement sources are telling abc news a person who died opened fire first and then was killed in the return of bullets. bundy and multiple other people who were with him were arrested. the arrests also took place elsewhere. immediately a local hospital was put on lockdown as a follower who was injured in the shoot-out got treatment there. alex stone, abc news. >> donald trump will not take center stage florida tomorrow night's debate on fox news. in fact, he's not going to take the stage at all. >> trump was demanding fox remove news anchor megyn kelly as one of the moderators. fox refused so trump says i'm out. he's been highly critical of kelly since a debate in august when she asked him about the disparaging words he used to describe women he didn't like. >> megyn kelly's really biased against me. she knows that. i know that, everybody knows that. do you really think she can be fair at a debate? >> i maintain it was a tough but

fair question and we agreed to disagree. >> trump's current rival in iowa, ted cruz is firing back at him for skipping the debe e and challenging him to a one-on-one debate on their own ahead of the caucuses. abc's tom llamas has the latest from the campaign trail. >> reporter: senator ted cruz with a warning to his supporters this predictions about donald trump. >> if donald wins iowa, he right now has a substantial lead in new hampshire. if he went on to win new hampshire as well, there is a very good chance he could be unstoppable and be our nominee. >> reporter: cruz and the super pac supporting him now unloading a barrage of 11th hour attack ads on the billionaire, using trump's own words to trash his new york values. >> i lived in new york city and manhattan all my life. so you know, my views are a little bit different than if i lived in iowa. >> what does trump think of iowa? >> how stupid are the people of iowa. >> donald trump, new york values, not ours. >> reporter: trump trying to

show his values actually do line up with iowa evangelicals. >> i hear this is a major theme right here. 2 corinthians. right? 2 corinthians. 3:17, that is the whole ball game. >> reporter: but a boost. trump scoring the endorsement of jerry falwell junior, the son of the late tv evangelist and the president of liberty university. and far from the trump, cruz show, a series of republican candidates gunning for third place, some confident. >> i'm very comfortable when it comes down to it, we're going to have a lot of those people make us their first choice. i feel good about it. >> new jersey governor chris christie snapping at a young woman asking why he wasn't back in new jersey managing storm clean-up. >> i have friends family calling me sending pictures, videos all over the state. >> all over the state? really? there's been one county that's flooded. i don't know where from all over the state since we have 21 counties where that's happened. second, i don't know exactly what you expect me to do. you want me to go down there

with a mop? >> christie now saying he was only joking. so what will trump do on thursday? he tells us he's going to host an event at the same time as the debate to raise money for veterans and he also wonders how many people are going to watch the debate if he's not there. tom llamas, marshalltown, iowa. >> i'm curious to see how many people will be watching. the debate. on the democratic side, hillary clinton is just barely edging out bernie sanders in iowa. sanders seemed shocked by the huge crowd in st. paul last night. so many people turned out, nearly 5,000 people were moved to an overflow room for the most part, sanders stayed on script calling for a political revolution. hillary clinton has been on the stump in iowa, as well, stepping up her criticism of sanders essentially calling him unelectable and at a town hall meeting clinton was asked if she would be open to nominating president obama to the supreme court. well, she lavender saying that question was a first for her, but said "it's a great idea."

>> classes are canceled today in one indianapolis school district following the death of a veteran principal. susan jordan was struck and killed when a bus jumped the curb in front of her elementary school. two 10-year-old students were hurt but are expected to survive. jordan had been principal of the school for 22 years. let's move on now to the big digout after the blizzard of 2016. the federal government by the way in washington set to reopen today and so are schools there and in philadelphia but not in baltimore. slowly but surely life is returning to normal in the eastern u.s. we get more from abc's david kerley. >> reporter: take a look. a front end loader in queens needed to pull a sanitation truck out of the thick snow. part of the reason this recovery is so slow. residential streets from newark to baltimore and south remain a problem. for a third day outside of richmond, beverly wood is stuck. her street has not seen a plow. >> i can't get to work because i can't get out. >> reporter: in virginia, one in ten streets the state is responsible for still have not been plowed.

>> our crews are working as hard as they can. >> reporter: fire crews in baltimore had to work through an unplowed street to get to a rowhouse fire. this is what stranded residents up and down the east coast hope for. maybe not a perfectly plowed road but at least a pathway out of their neighborhood. it's not just plowing but removing snow. how much? look at this shot of yankee stadium from an nypd chopper. new york city crews could have filled it 66 times. >> very, very happy. finally. we waited 48 hours to get this thing done. >> reporter: some of those crews finally getting to that man's home in queens. he's one in the lucky ones. here in arlington, virginia, they are still waiting for this street to be plowed more than three days after the storm. david kerley, abc news, arlington, virginia. >> good news now about the housing market. home prices have risen 5.8% in november thanks to low mortgage rates, a shortage of homes on the market and solid hiring growth. prices rose fastest in portland, oregon, san francisco and denver.

all about 11% in all three. and portland is one of the hottest markets in the country right now with prices at an all-time high. i guess if you're a buyer, this isn't good news. >> i guess not. so an up and down day for weight watchers literally. shares of the weight loss company jumped 18% on the heels of a new add revealing that oprah winfrey has lost 26 pounds and claiming she eats bred every day on the plan. the struggling company also saw shares increase when the talk show queen joined the company last october and buying 10% of its stock. >> we were talking about this in the hair and makeup room yesterday when you weren't around yesterday because it's girl talk. >> i don't need to hear. >> and we were saying we know a lot of women who in the past couple months joined weight watchers and seen tremendous results. >> because of that. >> they feel it teaches them how to eat in a way that there's such a gym craze but people forget that eating is a huge part of it, too.

traveled overseas and came back already will infected. the travel industry is concerned with the latest news now prompting united airlines and carnival cruise lines to offer pregnant women refunds, credits, and exchanges on tickets to places where it is found. more now from abc's linsey davis. >> growing concerns about the spread of the zika virus. many pregnant women who have traveled abroad are rushing to doctors to get checked. they are getting cranial ultra sounds and eye exams if their mothers were possibly infected. >> we are getting calls every day, unfortunately. any patients with symptoms we are having them tested. >> reporter: the fear is a possible link between the virus and birth defects like microcephaly in which babies are born with abnormally small heads and linked to paralysis in adults. there's already a travel advisory in effect for pregnant women to avoid these 24 areas where the disease has been detected. including el salvador where officials are asking for women
