he found the son wounded in the leg. one of the important things here is maryland does have strict gun laws in terms of the storage. you must have a gun stored inside of a cabinet or it has to have a gun lock on it. that was not the case here. even though police are calling this an accident. they are investigating to try to find out exactly what happened here. the youngster has been transported and the wounds are considered non-life threatening. they will investigate to see what they can learn about the case. richard reeve, abc7 news. maureen: thank you, richard. our other big story the storm watch team tracking risk of a refreeze. this is as we got the warm temperatures needed to dig out from the blizzard. we learning another death in the area. leon: prince george's county

police found body of an 84-year-old woman. she wandered away from the home on monday. at least five deaths are blamed on the storm. what we know about the recovery, take a look at the screen. these schools canceled classes for the rest of the week. only d.c. public schools will be opening tomorrow on time. prince george's county -- charles county will open two hours late. prince georges and montgomery county are closed but they are offering free lunch for the students. no word on the federal government plan. we will continue to scroll the information as we get it on the bottom of the screen. maureen: we start with the storm watch team coverage with plunging temperatures and we will hear from chief meteorologist doug hill. doug: right now the skies are clear across the weather center. just about two or three degrees above freezing. that will change tonight. take a look live. national harbor, 6:00. light in the sky. high clouds in the horizon.

you see how clear it is. with the clear skies and the lighter winds, temperatures will fall quickly. 39 at the reagan national airport. 36 in leesburg and win chester. 38 in annapolis. overnight tonight temperatures will drop. sampling of the wake-up temperatures in the area. largo is 18. waldorf at 18. what melted today will freeze tonight. there will be numerous icy patches and icy spots throughout the late night and the overtight. leon: the refreeze is the last thing that anyone want to hear about. many just got a chance to drive out of their own neighborhood. brad bell is live in laurel to tell us what he is finding out tonight.

the plows have come through. beautiful sight. we checked out the neighbors that people complained. what we saw was for the most part the plows did get in the neighborhoods last night and today. the county has promised that they will have the streets 100% passible. 100% of the streets passible by 9:00 p.m. tonight. they say they will meet the goal. they are at 95% right now. but they admit there is much work to be done to be ready for full commute. >> we made everything passible. we will continue to bring everything down to bear pavement and work the intersections. and really get things back to some sense of normalcy. brad: don't expect the full

sense of normalcy tomorrow morning if you are heading out the work for the first time. you will find four-lane roads down to two. turn lanes that aren't there. leon, when you talk to me, you talked about refreezing. we are seeing that happen in this community tonight. matter of fact, near the edges of the roads here. it's a sheet of ice. we are not entirely out of the woods yet. in laurel, brad bell, abc7 news. leon: caution is the word of the week going forward. thank you, brad. in northern virginia, three school systems canceled classes all week long because of the safety concern. the biggest concern are the slick sidewalks and the poor visibility called by the snow piles and the drift. prince william county, cabin fever is a big issue there. the school system closed thursday and friday and it's closed all of this week as well. it has a scheduled dale off on monday, which means eight straight days without school. maureen: in the district the snow emergency went into effect friday morning and will expire in a few minutes at 6:30 p.m.

it comes after d.c. schools and the d.c. government reopened this morning. both will open again on time tomorrow. the lifting of the snow emergency allows people to resume parking on snow emergency roots and eliminate the surcharge to cab fares. so far d.c. towed 670 cars and ticketed 5,000 more in the snow emergency. leon: now the washington regents returned to work after 2016 was a rough one after the roads with the snow piles. all morning long the "good morning washington" team were out watching crash after crash involving trailers. it shut down two part of the beltway and i-270 and snarled the morning commute. let's see how things are shaping up on the roads. joce sterman tracking it in mobile track 7. at least you're moving. joce: we are moving. for the first time in two hours this is the first time we are sitting in traffic.

we are on 395 in the south in the district heading to virginia. this is the only hiccup in the commute. we went almost the entire way around the beltway without running into any major complications. which is a miracle. all lanes are open. down to clear and dry pavement. so of the snow melt sneaking on the highway. that is a problem that many anticipate they will run into the problems as it freezes up overnight. for tonight's commute it's been miraculous. we circled around the beltway hour and 15 minutes, unheard of in a weeknight commute. leon: the historicably vard could have historic price tag. what would take for the road cleaning budget in the area.

stop a brazen thief from committing robberies in prince george's county. leon: stephen tschida joins us live with what we know about the blizzard bandit. stephen: well, in the final hours of the big snowstorm this area baltimore avenue in college park covered in snow. a criminal, a robber tredgeed through the snow and into that 7-eleven and held him up. the blizzard bandit. look at the surveillance shots. he tredgeed through the snow. >> he took advantage of the snow. friday night, nobody. stephen: his first strike was a restaurant in bellsville. >> he came in and took the money. he said, "where is the money?" stephen: the next day he hit a nearby 7-eleven. sunday he struck three 7-elevens from just before 4:00 in the morning until after 5:00.

maureen: you saw the fire live on abc7. now we know what caused the fire at an apartment complex in adelphi. investigators ruled the fire accidental. they say flammable sprayed a he's i came in contact with

the open flame on a kitchen stove. the couple living in the apartment suffered burns. their son rescued them and called 911. the wife remains hospitalized while her husband has been released. a woman seriously hurt in a house fire last week is making progress. she is now in stable condition and the hospital expects her to recover. the woman suffered second-degree burns to nearly half of her body when flames engulfed her home. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. leon: for the first time in nearly a week all metro lines and stations are up and running. the unusual number of rail cars are undergoing minor repairs due to issues from the snow and the ice. as a result the trains will likely be more crowded than usual for several days to come. all metrobus routes will run tomorrow. detours on some routes remain in place. maureen? maureen: the historic storm over the weekend is likely to bring with it expensive clean-up. watchdog chris papst looked into what the cost might be. chris, can you tell us what you found? chris: there is good news and bad news here. the good news is we have had a mild winter so the area and the local snow budgets are pretty full. but the bad news we had a storm that could defleet all of that -- deplete all of that. we won't know for a few weeks how much the blizzard of 2015 will cost. receipts and time cards need to be calculated, the truck hours, gas and salt need to be added up. as we wait to see how much damage is done. we can see how much that cost taxpayers that didn't have 30 inches or more. the maryland state highway budget for snow removal is $56 million. but in 2010 the snow spent $125 million on the snow removal. vdot snow budget for northern virginia is $70 million.

but in 2014, taxpayers spent more than double that. $152 million for the season. knowing all of this here is what governor terry mcauliffe said over the weekend. governor mcauliffe: this is a very expensive storm. it's costing the commonwealth $2-$3 million an hour. at the end of the day this will probably be the most expensive snow event ever. it could top over $100 million. chris: of course the governor is talking about the entire state of virginia that has a $202 million snow removal budget. so he believes this one storm could eat up half of that for the entire state. you have to take into that state, county, and storm remove and it will cost in hundreds of millions of dollars. we will know in about a month. chris papst, abc7 news. leon: national park and the

country club. 37. but through the night the skies will clear like this afternoon and the winds will diminish and everybody will be below freezing and some areas will be in the low teens. hard freeze, too. temperatures officially are 48 degrees. 38 the morning low. 44, 29 the averages. another day of above average temperatures. given the snow on the ground, that is a good thing. 36 in leesburg. 32 in frederick. 37 in the midshore and 36 at andrews. 40 in fredericksburg. heading through overnight hours idea of the wake-up temperatures to be across the area. 16 in gaithersburg. 17 in fairfax. college park is 17. along the bay where it is warmer still below freezing. by early tomorrow morning. the puddles in the parking lot and sidewalks will freeze. even in the southern zone with the same story. low 20's in la plata.

22 in the morning and 25 in leonardtown. 23 in fredericksburg. 21 in stafford. cold start. we have another storm system. there was a tornado in broward county but all of that will miss us. mother nature is giving us a break here as the future cast indicates the clear sky tonight. moisture from florida will miss us southeast by a bit. that is good. it will turn cooler and breezier on friday. so the cold air will hold off until the storminess is out of the picture. over the weekend the temperatures will rise more with plenty of sunshine heading through the day on saturday and sunday as well. so the forecast for the day tomorrow after a cold and a freezing morning it will turn partly cloudy and the highs of 44 in the afternoon. winds turn south at 5 miles per hour. looking to the next seven days it looks as though we get through tomorrow night and the temperatures could be below freezing. not as cold. get to the weekend and warm it up. 46 by saturday. 53 on sunday and monday.

robert: the caps are back on the ice after a week-long layoff that were canceled due to the blizzard. they have another rest before the all-star game so that means one game in 13 days for washington. they will host the flyers at the phone booth and they will try to shake off the rust. not just on the skates. >> get hit be. hit. do something to get yourself into it early. >> the minds are ready. bodies are ready. it's nice to have a break and heal up a few things. >> it's torrent to get going right away. we should have, our legs should be fresh. we should have a good start. robert: looks like cam newton is taking advantage of the national spotlight. carolina and denver in the bowles. he is in the spotlight for the in-game celebrations and after he scores a touchdown. he told reporters why he thinks he gets so much criticism. >> i said it since day one.
