reporter: what she called a strong smell lasted weeks. thomas didn't want guests in.thing it she wanted to know more about whether something buried deep in mattress was behind the smell. the 7 on your side decided to go undercover. bought three mattresses, memory foam and coil. inside the abc 7 studios and set them up in separate offices. then we hired an accredited lab to help us do testing for what's offgassing, using special containers to measure what off thes came mattresses. 24 hours later, we packed up the sent them off to the lab. >> it's not a position, to have have a chemistry to go buy a mattress. reporter: but the doctor knows the science well enough to explain. we asked the staff scientist w

nonprofit natural resources defense council to weigh in. >> something that did raise for me is that there was a number of different chemicals found in the testing. we found the chemicals include known respiratory acetone. like potential carcinogens like inane and benzene, found many everyday products. they are researched and wantsted, but the nrdc tougher rules, saying our test shows the need, because although none of the chemicals we found at high levels, above approved standards, she says you easy.necessarily rest you are still breathing in a cocktail of mixed chemicals at bedtime, something that has not been studied. >> and we don't really know what our health, if someone is sleeping on a mattress, breathing in that of chemicals for a long period of time. reporter: we sent the international sleep products association detailed questions about our findings, but the group said it would
