this morning on "world news now," horrifying crash. the helicopter with a family of tourists on board going out of control, slamming into the water, the jaw dropping scene in vacation paradise. >> frightening flames. a fire tornado churning and burning. the powerful winds and dry conditions fueling more danger today. >> new this half hour, a nation of deprived sleep. >> the new public health warnings about americans and their lack of rest. the headline hitting home especially at this hour. >> and later in "the skinny," the new mary poppins movie, a new film chapter of the classic story is in the works. who is taking the role made famous by julie andrews? it's friday, february 19th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now."

morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm reena ninan. andrews. i love emily blunt. >> she is fantastic, but -- >> you just cannot -- she's an icon. she's an icon. >> she is. but they're going to try a sequel. >> two people in this world cannot be replaced, julie andrews and pope francis. who is going to come after him? i would not want to be the person that comes after him. >> i'm sure donald trump has some suggestions on who will replace him. >> incredible images, a stunning helicopter crash in hawaii. federal investigators are trying to determine why this chopper went down like this. >> the location of the crash was close to witnesses, and that probably helped save lives. abc's david kerley covers aviation for us. >> reporter: it happened in just seconds. the helicopter, just short of land, rolling over in the water. >> holy crap! >> reporter: bystanders jump in to help the five people on board. a knife reportedly needed to free one of them. all

one in a neck brace. a 16-year-old male in critical condition. the chopper coming down in pearl harbor near the uss arizona memorial. >> that was scary. we were thinking we were going to see a dead body come up. >> reporter: it's clear in the video the tail rotor is not turning and the sound from the engine is erratic. scott reiff is a helicopter pilot for kabc. >> it appears at some point he lost some type of power, that he disengaged the rotor system from the engine. he may have flared a little too high. it's hard to say for certain. just didn't have enough energy in the rotor system to cushion the landing. >> reporter: the bell 206 is a single engine, five-seat aircraft. this one built in 1979 and owned by what appears to be a one-helicopter tour company called genesis. the surviving pilot should be able to tell investigators exactly what went wrong. the navy aided firefighter crews in that rescue. the ntsb is saying they are launching a investigator to hawaii to try and learn what happened. david kerley, abc news, washington.

>> we move on to more dramatic video as firings near kansas city battle a huge brush fire. they believe it was sparked by grass cutting equipment. but the heat from the blaze and the high winds fanning it korea add fire tornado. the fire is on prison property. but it closed a nearby highway. consuming about 1500 acres and is about 75% contained this morning. no homes are threatened at this time. not so in eastern oklahoma where there are more than two dozen grass fires burning. the most in years. officials say numerous homes were lost. but they don't know how many as yet. the city of tulsa has been filled with smoke from the fires. firefighters are using helicopters to dump water as you see there on these fires and officials say they are so intense right now. well, in northern california, the threat is much more wintry. a powerful system brought nearly a foot of snow to some of the higher elevations. strong winds are also limiting visibility with whiteout conditions. many truckers pulled over till the roads were cleared.

>> and it may take as long as a week to clean up this weather mess in utah. a strong wind storm followed by a hailstorm and heavy snow. the winds blew vehicles off the road, uprooted trees and knocked a highway sign into power lines. thousands of residents lost power in the salt lake city area. temperatures fell 30 degrees within a short period. >> speaking of today's weather and the forecast, windy conditions will continue to threaten the great plains and midwest with high fire danger. downpours in the pacific northwest. another foot of snow is possible in the sierra nevada and cascades. snow and freezing rain in western new york. >> and we're talking record warmth in the midwest 56 in chicago, 70 in kansas city, 60s in los angeles and atlanta, 80s in dallas and phoenix. 30s in new york and boston. >> well, a few storm cloud rums through last night's democratic town hall in las vegas. hillary clinton booed by the crowd when she accused b

democrat until he decided to run for president. she also criticized sanders for his attacks on the two most recent democratic presidents. bernie sanders had a few harsh words for clinton, as well as the two candidates battled it out ahead of tomorrow's primary in south carolina and tuesday's vote in nevada. in an interview with b.e.t., sanders questioned clinton's admiration for president obama saying it's just her way of trying to win black votes. don't you think they should all do the lip sync showdown to determine who wins the primary? >> lip sync battle? >> that would be kind of fun. so this we know, donald trump is well-known as you know for picking fights with anyone who questions or criticizes him. and his popularity never seems to waiver. but now he's going head to head with one of the most beloved men on the planet. the lead area of 1.5 billion people on earth. here's abc's dan harris. >> reporter: donald trump has taken on ple

but hisatest beef might be the biggest yet, the donald versus the holy father. the pope was heading home when he was asked if an american catholic could vote for somebody like trump given his stance on immigration. he responded "a person who thinks only about building walls wherever they may be and not building bridges is not christian." trump rarely one to turn the other cheek, hit back suggesting the mexican government was manipulating the pope. >> for a religious leader to question a person's faith is disgraceful. i'm proud to be a christian. they're using the pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves. >> reporter: he even said the pope should want him in the oval office. >> if and when the vatican is attacked by isis, i can promise you that the pope would have only wished and prayed that donald trump would have been president. >> reporter: and at the cnn town hall, trump not backg

against breastfeeding too long. children may get too little vitamin d that way. breast milk does not provide enough vitamin d particularly in northern areas. so canadian pediatricians are recommending that children who are breast fed take vitamin d supplements for their first year. now to some news we can relate to on this shift. sleep deprivation. this is breaking news and ground breaking. a new study from the centers of disease control finds that one in three americans don't get enough sleep. the shocking news says that at least seven hours of sleep we're not getting, that could lead to some serious health issues like heart disease. the study also features a state by state break down of sleeping patterns. shocking we're not getting e enough sleep. yeah, that's not so shocking. not at all.

>> residents also can't drink the tap water in flip the, michigan, but help is on the way. the state legislature closer to approving $30 million to help flint residents pay their water bill. the governor is also earmarking another $2 million specifically for flint. it will help replace lead water lines and also pay for some of the cost of reconnecting to detroit's water supply. another issue we've been following, the natural gas leak that's poisoned the air of one los angeles community for months has now been permanently sealed. >> after disrupting the lives of thousands of households, residents of porter ranch are now getting the green light to return home. but not everyone is racing back. kabc's leo stallworth has the story. >> reporter: after nearly four months of leaking some 80,000 metric tons of mostly methane gas and sickening and displacing thousands of residents, so-cal gas now starts the seven-night and eight-day clock for thousands of relocated residents win the five-mile radius affected by the leak to return to their homes.
