one in a neck brace. a 16-year-old male in critical condition. the chopper coming down in pearl harbor near the uss arizona memorial. >> that was scary. we were thinking we were going to see a dead body come up. >> reporter: it's clear in the video the tail rotor is not turning and the sound from the engine is erratic. scott reiff is a helicopter pilot for kabc. >> it appears at some point he lost some type of power, that he disengaged the rotor system from the engine. he may have flared a little too high. it's hard to say for certain. just didn't have enough energy in the rotor system to cushion the landing. >> reporter: the bell 206 is a single engine, five-seat aircraft. this one built in 1979 and owned by what appears to be a one-helicopter tour company called genesis. the surviving pilot should be able to tell investigators exactly what went wrong. the navy aided firefighter crews in that rescue. the ntsb is saying they are launching a investigator to hawaii to try and learn what happened. david kerley, abc news, washington.

>> we move on to more dramatic video as firings near kansas city battle a huge brush fire. they believe it was sparked by grass cutting equipment. but the heat from the blaze and the high winds fanning it korea add fire tornado. the fire is on prison property. but it closed a nearby highway. consuming about 1500 acres and is about 75% contained this morning. no homes are threatened at this time. not so in eastern oklahoma where there are more than two dozen grass fires burning. the most in years. officials say numerous homes were lost. but they don't know how many as yet. the city of tulsa has been filled with smoke from the fires. firefighters are using helicopters to dump water as you see there on these fires and officials say they are so intense right now. well, in northern california, the threat is much more wintry. a powerful system brought nearly a foot of snow to some of the higher elevations. strong winds are also limiting visibility with whiteout conditions. many truckers pulled over till the roads were cleared.

>> and it may take as long as a week to clean up this weather mess in utah. a strong wind storm followed by a hailstorm and heavy snow. the winds blew vehicles off the road, uprooted trees and knocked a highway sign into power lines. thousands of residents lost power in the salt lake city area. temperatures fell 30 degrees within a short period. >> speaking of today's weather and the forecast, windy conditions will continue to threaten the great plains and midwest with high fire danger. downpours in the pacific northwest. another foot of snow is possible in the sierra nevada and cascades. snow and freezing rain in western new york. >> and we're talking record warmth in the midwest 56 in chicago, 70 in kansas city, 60s in los angeles and atlanta, 80s in dallas and phoenix. 30s in new york and boston. >> well, a few storm cloud rums through last night's democratic town hall in las vegas. hillary clinton booed by the crowd when she accused b
