good friday morning. the countdown to the south carolina primaries and nevada caucuses the candidates are stepping up attacks hoping to way undecided voters. >> and then there's the clash that's pitting donald trump against pope francis and it is taking a new turn this morning. when the pope said trump's plan to build a wall between the u.s. and mexico was not christian, trump fired back calling the pope disgraceful but overnight, trump backtracked a bit. >> it's "your voice, your vote" and abc's ray raimundi gathering the latest overnight starting with the democrats. >> reporter: the stakes couldn't be higher. the presidential hopefuls hot on the campaign trail. the democrats crisscrossing through the state of nevada. >> i have an election that's about real change. not promises you can't keep. >> in the eyes of america they'll

leveled at the last republican debate. and one touching moment on the trail. ohio governor john kasich giving a long hug to a college student who cold kasich he gave him hope. brett smith said a friend had recently committed suicide. his parents divorced and his dad lost his job. kasich told the young man the lord will give you strength, i promise. >> very unusual moment and touching one there. in washington, d.c. a final farewell begins today for the late supreme court justice antonin scalia. his body will lie in repose in the great hall of the supreme court. he died on saturday during a trip to texas. president obama and the first lady will pay their respects at the court this afternoon. and vice president joe biden will attend scalia's funeral mass tomorrow but biden says he has no interest in replacing the justice. the vice president said he has no desire to sit on the high court even if he was asked but he also said, you never tell a

the vice president also criticized republicans for saying the president should not nominate a replacement. the u.s. has hit north korea with more sanctions because of president obama is quietly signing the punitive measure overwhelmingly approved by congress last week. it comes as the u.s. and china are in delicate negotiations over new u.n. sanctions. one senate sponsor of the u.s. measure hopes that china will notice the strong support for sanctions. back here at home more than two months after the terror attacks in san bernardino, the fbi tells abc news it's still not ruling out the possibility that a third militant was at that scene. the agency is also still looking for a hard drive that was used by the shooters. agents searched the home of syed farook's brother. no arrests were made but several boxes and a computer and other items were removed. the fbi does have syed farook's iphone but they can't get any information out of it. the data on it encrypted and

to unlock it despite that court order. well, now google, facebook, twitter and microsoft all say unlocking the phone for the fbi might set a precedent for other cases. well, there are more than two dozen grass fires burning in eastern oklahoma. that's the most in years. officials say numerous homes were lost. but they don't know how many. the city of tulsa has been filled with smoke from the fires. firefighters are using helicopters to dump water on the fires and officials say that the fires are not as intense now. well, more dramatic video as a huge brush fire near kansas city creates a fire tornado. the fire is on prison property but it has closed a highway there. firefighters believe it was started by a lawn mower. so far it has consumed about 1,500 acres. it's about 75% contained. no homes are threatened at this time. okay, so it has rained every day for the past eight days in the pacific northwest and as you can see on the radar there, it's not going to change before the

another 6 to 1 inches of fresh snow on the cascade mountains. elsewhere it'll feel like spring in the midwest and south with incredibly warm temperatures for this time of year but strong winds will increase the dangers of more brush fires but it will be chilly in the northeast. well, coming up, the alert for commuters, thousands of bridges in serious need of repair. and some video, tough for land lovers to watch, a boat in trouble or is it really? we'll explain. but first pothole protection. the tire-saving technology coming to a popular american vehicle.

says is a giant galaxy containing one of the largest black holes ever observed. the picture was taken by the hubble space telescope. the black hole is said to have 21 billion times the mass of our sun. well, a massive natural gas leak that sickened and displaced residents of a los angeles neighborhood for months has been plugged and now the clock is ticking for the thousands who fled the knoxous fumes to return home but despite assurances that the air quality is safe many residents are not so sure. some are fearful poisonous chemicals may have settled in their homes. a new study finds more than 58,000 of the nation's bridges are in repair. placed end to end they would span from new york down to miami and include some of the most well-known and well-traveled like the brooklyn bridge, memorial bridge in washington, d.c. and the 250 most heavily traveled bridges were all built before 1970. we do have a correction to make this morning.

about the carrier company moving hundreds of jobs to mexico, we incorrectly characterized the company's reason for doing so. we said that carrier claimed it never got government stimulus money. it was promised. carrier never made th statement. instead the company said it will not be claiming a tax credit for which it is eligible. we regret the error. a big reveal being made by one of the companies offering flights into space. a time lapse of the making of what virgin galactic calls its new spaceship 2. the first spaceship 2 destroyed during a test flight which killed one of the pilots. ground testing of the new ship starts soon and that will be followed by test flights. here's something cool. you know this winter is wilder than usual freeze and thaw cycle means more potholes. well, just in time for more to expand its pothole protection system to mainstream model. the v6 sport addition of its new ford fusion, the car

well, these stunning images may look like lava flowing from a volcano but this is yosemite national park. a phenomenon far more rare. a few days every february it hits horsetail falls just right so it looks like a river fire. photographers are swarming the area lighting up social media with these gorgeous shots. >> just a reflection of the sun. that's really cool. now for a look at the morning road conditions, wet roads in northern california, pacific northwest and near the great lakes. lots of snow in western mountains and slippery conditions in northern new york and new england. if you're flying, airport delays likeliest in chicago. well, the investigation is getting under way in hawaii into that shocking helicopter crash that we've shown you. >> the chopper slammed down into the waters of pearl harbor then witnesses swung into action to try to save those on board. abc's david kerley has the details. >> reporter: it happened in just

land rolling over in the water. >> oh. >> reporter: bystanders jump in to help the five on board. a knife needed reportedly to free one of them. >> i saw from the pilot's side and backseat and saw it was twisted so instinct. >> reporter: all survived. one in a neck brace, a 16-year-old male in critical condition. the chopper coming down in pearl harbor near the "uss arizona" memorial. >> that was scary. we were thinking we would see a dead body come up. >> reporter: it was clear the tail rotor was not turning and the sound from the engine in erratic. scott rife is a helicopter pilot for kabc. >> it appears he lost power and disengaged the rotor system from the engine. may have flared too high and didn't have enough energy to cushion the landing. >> reporter: the bell 206 was built in 1979 and owned by what appears to be a one-helicopter tour company

the surviving pilot should be able to tell investigators exactly what went wrong. david kerley, abc news, washington. one more item involving pope francis. his eyebrow raising comment about the zika virus outbreak. he suggested that women threatened with the virus could use contraception. pregnant mothers are among those most vulnerable to the zika virus. the pope said he believes there is a clear, moral difference between preventing pregnancy and aborting a fetus. he also completely rejected abortion as a response to the crisis. well, there is a new warning about breast-feeding especially long term. children may get too little vitamin d that way. researchers say the breast milk does not provide enough vitamin d, particularly in northern climates so canadian pediatricians are recommending children breast fed take vitamin d supplements for their first year. a woman busted for trying to sneak on to airplanes has done

mare london hartman arrested wednesday at o'hare airport held on $150,000 bond. in the past she has tried to illegally board them succeeding at least once now violating with trespassing and violating her probation. this may make you seasick. appears this boat is in trouble but it's a training exercise. the recent film "the finest h r hours" about a real-life rescue from coast guardsmen from the same location more than 60 years ago also in rough sea. in houston a school bus comes close to being struck by a train. the terrifying encounter captured on cell phone video. the driver said the students were too loud to drive safely at first the driver was only suspended while the incident was being investigated but that investigation found that the driver failed to follow proper procedures when crossing a railroad track. the driver was

murder suspect darron wint is due back in court. earlier this week, a grand jury indicted wint on four counts of first degree murder for the deaths of the savopoulos family, and their housekeeper vera figueroa. police say the 4 were held for hours during a kidnapping and extortion plan. after the murders, the mansion was set on fire. if convicted, wint could face life in prison without the possibility of parole, for each of the deaths. right now.. the city of flint is recieving millions of dollars in emergency funds to fix miles of deteriorating water pipes. the governor of michigan say the state is sending 2 million dollars in grant money to help fix the water system. flint's water contains toxic levels of lead, after the city switched water sources in an attempt to save money. tests now confirm dangerously high blood lead levels in many flint children. and federal prosecutors have
