this is "world news now." >> good morning. it's a very busy friday morning. i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm kendis gibson. let's get right to our top story this half hour. of course, we'll start with that tragedy in kansas. the deadly shooting spree there. police and co-workers say this man, 38-year-old cedric ford is responsible. >> ford has a long arrest record. he was killed at the lawn mower equipment maker where he worked but not before taking three lives and wounding more than a dozen other people. abc's chuck sivertsen has details. >> reporter: gunfire and fear erupting in a small kansas community. >> the gun was strapped to him. he was ready to go. >> reporter: shortly after 6:00 p.m. eastern time, law enforcement says 38-year-old cedric ford, armed with what's believed to be an all the rifle and a pistol, went on a shooting spree. the suspect opening fire at two separate locations before walking into the excel industries plant in hesston, kansas. >> once he got into excel indu

the parking lot. and he entered into the building itself. >> reporter: that building a lawn mower equipment company evacuated. outside employees lucky to be alive embraced. ford who was employed there was later killed by law enforcement. coworkers and neighbors are in shock. >> he was a really nice guy and seemed not this kind of person. that's for sure. >> i just can't believe that the guy that shot people up lived right across the street from us. >> reporter: kansas governor sam brownback took to social media tweeting please send your thoughts and prayers to the people of hesston tonight. the shooting comes less than a week after authorities say a man opened fire at several people in kalamazoo, michigan, killing six. chuck sivertsen, abc news, new york. police say the rampage was not an act of terrorism but they have not disclosed the motive. by one count, this is the 33rd mass shooting so far this year. we'll be updating developments from kansas all morning long. look for the latest in our next

half hour and any breaking details on "america this morning." our other top story this morning, the showdown in texas. donald trump on the defensive taking fire from his lt t and right in debate number ten. >> marco rubio came out swinging and ted cruz joined in hitting trump on everything from immigration to the middle east. abc's arlette saenz has the highlights from the houston. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there were five presidential candidates on the stage here in houston last night, but the debate looked more like the marco rubio versus donald trump show. florida senator marco rubio unleashed attack after attack on donald trump, putting the republican front-runner on defense. >> you're the only person on this stage that's ever been fined for hiring people to work on your patrons illegally. >> no, i'm the only one on the stage that's hired people. you haven't hired anybody. in fact some of the people -- >> well, i hired -- and by the way, i've hired tens of thousands of people. you've hired nobody.

trump also took aim at former mexican president vicente fox. he used an obscenity to say mexico was promising not to pay for the border wall trump is promising to build. during the debate, trump said the wall just got ten feet taller. isn't is ironic don't you think because trump is known for using foul language on the campaign trail but he said fox should apologize for using such a filthy word on tv. a crucial day in syria. cease fires expected to take place within hours. it's the first serious attempt to stop the fighting in years. it could return the syrian government and the rebels to the negotiating table. it will also allow much needed humanitarian aid to reach remote areas, something president obama is hoping for. >>ful implemented -- if implemented and that's a significant if, this cessation could reduce the violence and get more food and aid to syrians who are suffering and desperately need it. >> the president also ordered his national security team to

u.s.-led military campaign against the islamic state on all fronts. he said he was adamant that the syrian cease fire not impact operations to destroy isis. clean-up and damage assessments from the deadly tornado outbreak are just getting under way this morning but the toll will be staggering. in virginia, members of a high school football team pitching inning to clear away debris from a tornado the national weather service says packed winds up to 165 miles an hour. and that's just one of more than 30 confirmed twisters. abc's gio benitez with the latest. >> reporter: a rare tornado outbreak from texas to pennsylvania. >> it was like the whole house kind of shook. >> reporter: the first ever deadly tornado in virginia in the month of february. the governor there declaring a state of emergency, after a tornado tore through the town of waverly, killing three, including a toddler. david root and his wife, susan, took cover in their storm cellar. >> you just heard the rain pounding into the storm cellar

>> reporter: when it was all over, root found victims, his neighbors, tossed 300 yards from their mobile home. > reporter: in tappahonick, virginia, an ef-3 tornado injuring at least 25 people, including an infant. homes in this community in lancaster, pennsylvania, flattened after an ef-2 barreled through. >> the noise was so loud, it was bang, bang. >> reporter: and off new york's rockaway beach, seven crew members were rescued from this fishing boat after 12-foot waves ran it aground. even the could i have the guard rescue boat overturning in those rough waters. the coast guard finally airlifting those fishermen to safety. so many close calls and despite all of the devastation here in lancaster, pennsylvania, still no injuries and no deaths. but a schoolhouse was leveled here, even so, workers believe they will rebuild it in a week. gio benitez, abc news, lancaster, pennsylvania. fire crews in houston say they've capped a leaking gas line

city workers were repairing a broken water main in an upscale residential neighborhood when their backhoe hit a gas line. that sparked a fire that engulfed the roof of one home. but firefighters were able to put it out quickly. a hospital in new jersey sent out an alarming letter to more than 200 former patients. they're being urged to get tested because they may have been exposed to hiv or hepatitis. a pharmacist who worked at shore medical center was arrested last month for drug tampering accused of stealing morphine and replacing it with saline. his blood may have come in contact with the patients. a major medical milestone in cleveland. surgeons have performed the first ever uterus transplant in the u.s. the 26-year-old patient will now have to wait a year before getting pregnant. the nine-hour operation used a uterus from a deceased donor. women in europe have successfully given birth after having the transplant but it's never been tried in the u.s. this could be very big for a lot of women. >> quite interesting.

23-year-old ukrainian named artur samarin, who overstayed his visa. police in harrisburg say samarin made up a phony identity, complete with a social security card and a pennsylvania driver's license. he enrolled at john harris high school as a freshman four years ago. and was just a few months shy of graduating. >> i was surprised, i thought he was like 17 or 18. >> reporter: classmates describe the student they knew as a straight arrow. >> i knew him since last year when he was in rotc. he was nice. >> reporter: parents are horrified. >> you have beautiful girls in this school that are minors, that are underage. and you have, basically, a grown man in here, you know, misrepresenting himself. >> reporter: police say a tip finally led them to discover the hoax. the question now is why? david wright, abc news, new york. it's amazing. he really didn't fly under the radar. he had a 4.16 grade average, he was inducted into national honor society in 2014. >> he was a star student.
