>> we're going to start of course, with the political showdown that developed last night. donald trump and hillary clinton have tightened the grip on their front-runner status after what was the biggest one-day haul of the primary season. >> trump sweeping the dean south and getting wins in vermont and massachusetts, cruz inwith his home state of texas and oklahoma. rubio with his first victory of this campaign in minnesota. trump coming in third there. >> let's do the math on the delegates. trump in the lead but still far from what he needs to secure the nomination. >> on the democratic side, hillary clinton winning seven states. bernie sanders keeping hope alive. taking four states. that includes colorado and minnesota. >> that said, clinton racking up hundreds of new delegates leading the count to date. both front-runners though are looking ahead to a match-up in the general election using their victory speeches to trade jabs. >> it's your voice, your vote. abc's marci gonzalez is covering all the victories from austin, texas. >> the polls are n

every from super tuesday state. here's in texas, a loss for donald trump. but that wasn't the cases in almost every other contest. after a day and night of long lines and ballot counting, abc news projecting major wins for fronts are uppers donald trump and hillary clinton. >> the stakes in this election have never been higher. and the rhetoric we're hearing on the other side has never been lower. >> i am a you know fire. once we get all of had finished i'm going to go after one person. that's hillary clinton. >> reporter: among the states projected to be taken by clinton, texas. the powerhouse state with the most delegates also giving ted cruz a crucial win at home. >> so long as the field remains divided, donald trump's path to the nomination remains more likely. and that would be a disaster for republicans. >> reporter: a home state celebrat

the projected winner in vermont saying he is undeterred by clinton's overall success. >> it's not winner take all. by the end of tonight, we are going to win many hundreds of delegates. >> reporter: and senator marco rubio also vowing to stay in the race after winning his first state. >> i will campaign as long as it takes and whatever it takes to ensure that i am the next president of the united states. >> reporter: it was a big day with possible record voter turnout in several of the super tuesday states. the candidates now looking ahead to the next big primaries in michigan, ohio, and florida. kendis and reena? >> marci, thank you. as marci mentioned cruz managed to win his home state of texas avoiding a loss that could have delivered a fatal blow to that campaign. >> cruz also won in neighboring oklahoma and pointed out he sharply differs from donald trump on key issues. abc's byron pitts with the senator in texas. good morning,

>> reporter: well, when ted cruz took the podium he was flanked by his wife of 14 1/2 years, their two small children, family and friends. he claimed victory making the case that he is now the only republican candidate who can walk down donald trump. and while that was his statement, the mood in the room was less celebratory and more relief. i talked to i an fwlub of supporters is afterwards one gentleman telling me, yeah, we won two states. four would have been better. i don't see the matthau we can beat donald trump in the end. so at the end of super tuesday, the republican field will be just as crowded on wednesday with rubio saying look, wait for me. i can walk down trump once we get to florida. cruz making the case to you he's the only alternative but lots of republican who's we talked to here in texas are anxious. they believe that it may be too late for any other republican candidate to walk down donald trump. reena, kendis, back to you. >> thank you so much byron.

let's get down to some analysis from what we've seen from voters. >> a short time ago, we spoke with our political team. >> we have looked for republican divisions. party is actually not divided. they're embracing donald trump. you see massachusetts and alabama and tennessee and arkansas and all these states regional diversity and ideological diversity inside of the party. the thing is if you judge a party by its voters, donald trump owns this party right now. >> a lot of ways busy is seen by many of his supporters as irreplaceable. it seems as if the tide is turning against him. >> that's right. clinton looks unstoppable right now and she began this campaign as someone who was the likely nominee. she was the presumed democratic nominee. now she's earned it. she had the scare in iowa. she took a huge hit in new hampshire. she's really come back now and tonight we see her sailing out of super tuesday with that strong lead that she's earned. >> and our political coverage is far from over. we're going to hear from insiders from the

political gains last night. that's later in this half hour. well, some legal rulings involving two of the republican candidates starting with ted cruz. a judge in illinois has dismissed a lawsuit which claimed that cruz shouldn't be allowed on the ballot in that state because he wasn't born in the u.s. the case was thrown out on a technicality. attorney who fileded said he still is deciding whether to appeal. and a ruling from a court here in new york says a fraud lawsuit against donald trump can continue. the suit alleges that trump's former school for real estate investors called trump university was unlicensed. and defrauded students by having them enroll in increasingly expensive seminars. it seeks $40 million in restitution and damages for thousands of students. trump asked that the suit be dismissed. the court rejected the request. >> the showdown between apple and the head of the fbi. at issue whether the computer giant should comply with a judge's order to unlock

bernardino shooters. we get more now from abc's elizabeth hur. >> reporter: from the courthouse to capitol hill. >> if you're expecting somebody to obey an order to do something they don't want to do and you haven't figured out whether you could do it yourself. >> reporter: the case pitting apple against the fbi took center stage in washington with both sides making that case before the house judiciary committee. >> should the fbi be allowed to stop apple or any company from offering the american people the safest and most secure products it can make. >> we're asking apple take the vicious guard dog away. let us try and pick the lock. >> reporter: the fbi insisting they're not asking apple to create a oh called magic key. they want access to just one iphone for clues. >> is there somebody else and are there clues to what else might have gone on? that is our job. >> reporter: apple has already asked the courts to have this case thrown out. arguing unlocking that one phone compromises the security of millions can of others. >> the only way w

that we view as sort of the software equivalent of cancer. >> reporter: also weighing in is attorney general loretta lynch from a cybersecurity conference saying for the victims and the public, the government must do everything under the law to fully investigate terrorist attacks. kendis and reena? >> thank but.another sex abuse scandal involving the catholic church is erupting in pennsylvania. it rivals the scope of scandals in boston and philadelphia. two bishops in altoona are accused of covering up hundreds of abuse cases by more than 50 priests an religious leaders. that's over a period of 40 years. the state's attorney general says no charges have been filed as the statute of limitations has expired in most cases. >> the sexual assault case against bill cosby in pennsylvania has been put on hold pending an appeal. cosby was expected to appear for a preliminary hearing next week bug that will now have to wait while judges decide whether to have the case thrown out as

turning now to another developing story this morning. at least one confirmed and two other potential tornadoes in alabama. at least four people were injured by a twister southwest of birmingham. packing sustained winds you have 75 miles per hour. at least a dozen homes sustained serious damage. trees were uprooted and power lines were downed. >> it wasn't a tornado but an out-of-control suv that all but destroyed a restaurant in newtown outside of boston. killing at least two people and injuring at least seven others. the restaurant was packed with diners at the time of this accident. and several people were also on the sidewalk. the suv's driver and passenger are believed to have suffered only minor injuries. no word though on what caused that crash. and that suv slammed right into a home right there in omaha, nebraska on the other side of the wall was a 12-year-old boy's bedroom. jeffrey moore wasn't injured. possibly because had he moved his bed to the other side of the room before

just hours before the crash. the driver a 56-year-old man was arrested on dui charges. of in south dakota, a victory for activists supporting transgender rights. the governor has retoed a bill that would have made the state the first in the nationings to require transgender school studentston use bathrooms and locker rooms that match their sex at birth. had the republican governor says the bill does not address any pressing issue. the bill's sponsor says he will not fight the veto. so regular viewers of our show may recall a little while back we featured the newest creation of an bagel shop in brooklyn, rainbow bagels. now a doughnut shop is getting in on the act. >> mo's dougs doughnut shop, that's quite a sentence there, it's also in brooklyn cranking out rainbow doughnuts. it you believe it? it sold out on its first day of sale. >> mo says the result is not the

returning to our top story, donald trump and hillary clinton relishing their super tuesday success stories. trump trounced his fellow rivals claiming all but a few victories. ted cruz won a couple of races including his home state of texas. marco rubio picked up minnesota, his first victory and bernie sanders is still in the running holding off clinton for the win in several states. hillary clinton follows up her big super tuesday win with a rally and concert in new york. among those performing
