walking free right now. and a helicopter goes down at bwi airport. abc 7 news at 11:00 starts now. >> now abc 7 news at 11:00, on your side. first, sadness and confusion, one firefighter dead, another hospitalized in critical condition, and tonight were that the man who pulled the trigger has been released from police custody and is not facing charges yet. as people rally around the fire department impacted by this tragedy. roz plater is live outside of the later for hills fire station with our top story. is a memorial right outside station 30. people have been dropping by and leaving flowers and candles. we are told condolences are coming in from around the country. this tragedy is touching everyone. an

engine company 30, prince george's county firefighters mourning one of their own. arefighter john ulmschneider, 13 year veteran, was gunned down in the line of duty. new details emerging about the incident friday night. firefighters responded to a home on sharon road in temple hills. the relative called 911, thinking there was a medical emergency. first responders identified themselves, knocking loudly 30 times beforee making the decision to force entry. >> i heard the banging on the door, and then gunshots. about 6, 7 gunshots. roz: the homeowner shot the firefighters and his own brother. >> he was in pain. he was asking for help.

that moment. they eventually got him to roll, crawl down the steps, through the driveway, out into an area of the street where they could carry him to the truck. homeowner was taken in for questioning but released and he does not currently face charges. the case is still being good investigative. some neighbors believe he was trying to defend himself. >> he was trying to protect his house, i believe. he thought somebody was trying to break in. a man at the home who identified himself as the homeowner said he cannot answer questions. by phone, is relative called this unintentional and it's sad for the family. all of this is being investigated by prince george's county police and the state's attorney's office is looking at all angles. live in hyattsville, roz plater, abc 7 news. kimberly: within the

funeral services for firefighter ulmschneider. visitation will be tuesday at st. john's parish in hollywood, maryland. he will be laid to rest during a funeral wednesday afternoon with a private burial after. -- where 28s from people have died. there was a powerful earthquake. the u.s. geological survey said the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit along the central coast of the country. residents reported feeling shaking for more than a minute. soon i'll me warnings are in place for some areas along the coastline, several aftershocks have continued into the night. two people were taken to the hospital after being exposed to carbon monoxide at the atf headquarters at 7 p.m. tonight. this was a long new york avenue north

baptist church in centerville. and 31 others she were shot and killed by a single gun man at virginia tech. >> i called her all day. it got to the point where her voicemail was full. no callbacks, only memories. >> she was christian and she wanted everyone to know about it. cheryl: it make sense that she is remembered with uplifting music, helping those in need through the erin peterson fund, giving over $160,000 of scholarships and awards. erin was known as daddy's girl, and for the celebration, her mom says they are back together. mr. peterson died from a heart attack a month ago. it's not fair, right, or i can go about and say it's what god intended. tickets tonight were free, but they operate on donations.

tournament in september. cheryl conner, abc 7 news. kimberly: right now, a search for answers in the death of a woman at a montgomery county motel. investigators were called to the red roof inn on shady grove road in rockville this morning for the report of a woman found dead. the police say the woman was stabbed to death. they are investigating the death as suspicious. no word on her identity or a possible suspect. andloping tonight, the ntsb faa are investigating a helicopter crash near bwi airport. doing lineter was inspections for baltimore gas & electric when it went down. three people were on board, none of them seriously hurt. officials say there was no impact on airline operations, but there were some delays on mark and amtrak routes. crews were called in to battle a brush five because of the crash. turning now to the

rain moving back in coming up in the forecast. tomorrow marks the final day of this year's national cherry blossom festival. it has been quite the celebration, including an event celebrating japanese pop tonight. the cherry blossom blast was at the carnegie library at mount vernon square, including activities ranging from gaming lay, the latest in japanese fashion, it and street food. news channel 8 have been proud sponsors of the cherry blossom festival and we are looking forward to it again next year. another huge celebration in the district today, emancipation day. a parade was held this afternoon, followed by a concert at freedom plaza. emancipation day marks the day in 1867 when president lincoln signed an order freeing more than 3100 slaves in the district.

pairs. new information from japan where the search for survivors of two deadly earthquakes resumed at first light. people in southwest japan spent a cold, wet night in shelters. others slept in their cars. at least 40 people died in the earthquakes. hit in the earthquakes largely were larry is, many of the homes and buildings -- it hit largely in rural reas, many of the homes and buildings were built to sustain an earthquake. tomorrow, volunteers will set up at more than 75 locations along the 33 mile stretch of rock creek to clean up trash and items. rock creek conservancy says more than 15,000 bags of litter and 900 tires have been collected to date.
