announcer: from abc 7 news, this is a breaking news alert. >> we begin with breaking news out of four fax county. adam torres, charged in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man, pleading guilty just minutes before he was set to go on trial. our bureau chief is live outside the

case. >> this was certainly a surprise to those of us who have been covering this case since the beginning. the prosecutor said that this plea agreement was presented to him yesterday, was negotiated between the defense attorney for adam torres and the attorney representing john geer's longtime partner. prosecutors saying that mara harrington had made it clear she did not want to testify during a trial and she did not want their daughters to have to testify either. former fairfax county police officer adam torres pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of john geer and a jail sentence of one year. it was on august 20 9, 2013, prosecutors say, that -- on aug 2013, prosecutors say, that john geer had been drinking and acting belligerent. police arrived.

townhome, prosecutors say adam torres fired one shot at geer's chest, killing him almost immediately. fores was set to be tried second-degree murder, but did a great -- but today pleaded guilty to manslaughter. >> i wanted him to be guilty. i wanted she and her daughter to have some sense that some justice was done. >> he has admitted to at least a felony. , as farps the situation as i'm concerned, a little bit. it's a no-win is what it really boils down to. adam torres did read a statement in court saying that he was truly sorry for what has happened, said that he was heartbroken, that he was responsible for the loss of the father of john geer's

children. he said that there were no words to express how adequately -- no words to adequately express how terrible he feels. adam torres will be officially sentenced on june 24. at that point, he will have already served 10 months. he will be sentenced to one year in jail. it will be up to the judge as to how much the time served will go into consideration to the sentence. much more coming up on later editions of abc news. live in fairfax county, jeff goldberg. autria: thank you for the update. breaking news now in prince george's county. news chopper seven over an industrial accident in brandywine. this involved a bulldozer in the 8900-block. they are investigating a potentially fatal injury. we are still working to get more information. stay with abc seven for updates -- abc 7 for updates as they come into our newsroom. now to the high court.

the supreme court that could impact 4 million immigrants living in the u.s. illegally. the judges are hearing a challenge to obama's sweeping immigration plan. sam sweeney is outside the court, where people have been rallying since we first saw you this morning. sam: the crowds continue to grow here. it just seems to get noisier and noisier. take a look behind me. there are about two dozen people not in support of the executive action, but everybody else supports immigration reform. meantime, inside the court, about a half-hour ago, oral arguments wrapped up. this case surrounds the lives of about 4 million undocumented people living in this country, who has children here, that are u.s. citizens or permanent residents. in 2014, president obama signed an executive action that would shield those parents from deportation. stas and 25 other

court, saying the president overstepped his boundaries. when the arguments began about 10:00 this morning, chief justice roberts quickly questioned the top u.s. government appellate attorney saying, look, i don't believe the president has the authority or the power to do this. justice anthony kennedy saying the same thing. meantime, outside, the children of undocumented immigrants say this is not a political issue, but if human issue. >> i think they should give -- it will help many people. it would give them a better life. it would help them get a better job. >> i think the greatest thing greatest fear right now is not to complete your life with your parents. your family is everything. it's what's holding you together. it's what carries you through life. sam: you can see how emotional those children are, fearing everyday

long. it has been intense. take a look at that dust. crews are now working on repaving. heavy machinery, heavy agreement has been brought in. what was a water main break, now they are working on repaving a very busy stretch of university boulevard that has been really beaten up. at times, the dust has been so bad, the workers have been doing their best to cover themselves with clothing and masks. you definitely want to avoid this area. it was a 12-inch pipe that ruptured here on saturday. because of that, they are closing several lanes. all of the westbound lanes are shut down, two eastbound lanes are also off limits. >> what happened on sunday -- it happened saturday morning. i went outside and i saw that big mess, water coming out of the middle of the street. it looked like a swimming pool.

was reported missing friday. her car was found in the shenandoah national park over the weekend. jeannette reyes is life with the latest on this -- is live with the latest on this bizarre case. jeannette: that search now going into its fourth hour. i have been with virginia state police throughout the morning. they are not saying much. we do now know where that car was located. earlier, they were not even revealing that location. off of the- this is white oak canyon trail, about 90 miles away from d.c. we 31-year-old firefighter, know, was reported missing friday, april 15, after she did not show up to work on a something that was very -- work, something that was very unusual for her, according to family members. her mini-cooper was found on saturday in a remote location in the park. authorities will say that

volunteeri morningside firefighter is slowly improving after he was shot four times. the 19-year-old was shot friday while responding to a welfare check in temple hills. that same gunfire killed a fellow firefighter. the shooter has been released from police custody. he told investigators he thought someone was breaking into his home, so he took action to defend himself. so far, no charges have been filed. a funeral service for the firefighter will be held wednesday. a major scare for airline passengers in london. police are investigating a possible drain -- plain and drone collision -- plane and drone collision overnight. >>

autria: he believes a drone struck the front of an aircraft as it was landing at heathrow airport. no one was hurt. engineers say the damage was superficial. experts say it could have been much worse. a simulation from virginia tech's crash lab shows how a drone can destroy a jet engine in just seconds. banite faa rules that drones from flying within five miles of any airport in the u.s., there are still about 25 incidents every month. millions of americans are at risk as severe storms sweep through the country. funnel clouds have been spotted in several areas. elizabeth hur has the latest. >> oh, my god. elizabeth: a live report turns into a real-life rescue. >> you've got to get out. >> what do i do? >> swim. >>

is right now. i will pointed out to you on the satellite picture. this is closer toward the charlottesville area. this is an image that was just tweeted out by the national weather service. you can have a better idea of where it is. this is shady grove. this is charlottesville. we are concerned about this wildfire because it is 0% contained, very dry conditions. still a lot of brown out there in the shenandoah national park. a lot of fuel for that to burn up. our wind will continue to get stronger tomorrow. hopefully, they will make progress today. temperatures unseasonably warm, already about 10 degrees above are average high. 75 in hagerstown. 78 degrees in fredericksburg. our winds are like right now -- are light right now. we got some changes ahead. first, our hometown high temperatures, lower 80's across the region.
