springfield townhouse with the then 13 and 17-year-old daughters inside the home. harrington called police and a standoff ensued for 45 minutes when adam torres one of the first officers on the scene fired one shot at john geer, killing him almost instantly. it then took 17 months for fairfax county police department released any information about the case. now after the guilty plea of adam torres, it's nearly all come to an end. >> it will never be fully accepted. it's something that will be with me forever. it is moving along. hopefully i can get back to a more normal life. >> i wanted him to be convicted of a felony. i wanted him to serve time. i wanted him not to be a police officer anymore. i wanted mora and her daughter to have a sense that some justice was done. although it's not a perfect or an ideal situation. jeff: not perfect or jail but the widespread sentiment from the prosecutors and

family. adam torres did a make a statement in court saying, "i am truly sorry for my actions. i am heartbroken for mr. geer's children. there are no words i can say to adequately express my remorse." adam torres will be sentenced formally on june 24. at that point he will have served ten month of the 12-month jail sentence. so it will depend what the judge decides how much longer if at all he will serve of the jail time. coming up at 5:00, we hear from don geer, the father of john geer with reaction to the in-court apology from adam torres as well as some of the words that john geer said prior to being fatally shot. a lot more coming up. until then, jeff goldberg, abc7 news. michelle: breaking news out of montgomery county where police announced the person whose body was found in a hotel over the weekend was murdered. montgomery county reporter kevin lewis is live in gaithersburg with the details.

kevin? kevin: the red roof inn staff found the person before noon on saturday. we are told the individual was murdered. they are now identified as 22-year-old kenneth blakeny. the police just revealed that blakeny was a transgender female. and was most likely working as a prostitute when she was murdered. multiple stab wounds to the upper body we're told as the cause of death. we can tell you that police are looking at a number of factors including surveillance video and any type of evidence in the hotel room, whether that is a cell phone or any sort of evidence that may lead them back to the person that ended up actually killing this 22-year-old. blakeny does have a criminal record according to maryland k-search. we can tell you that the police are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for anyone who helps them find the killer or killers. much more at 5:00. for now we are liv

gaithersburgs at police headquarters. i'm kevin lewis. abc7 news. michelle: the search is on for a local firefighter who hasn't been seen since friday. that is when nicole mittendorf didn't show up for work in fairfax county. the woodbridge woman's car was later found in madison county in shenandoah national park. suzanne kennedy has the latest on the search. suzanne: this is where the search is taking place in the chantilly national park. a hundred searchers for the local, state, federal encies have been looking for nicole mittendorf since saturday. this is the scene from white oak canyon where authorities are searching in the air and on the ground. the last time anyone heard from the fairfax firefighter wednesday the 13th. she was reported missing two days later. state police won't comment on her state of mind or what she was doing in the park. police say they are searching in the area of te miles. >> it's really a steep and a rocky terrain out there. it's about probably from

the casket in the funeral procession. the firefighters trying to figure out exactly what happened to their colleague. there is no answer today as i knock on the same door firefighters broke through friday night. plywood covers the hole they made to get in to potentially save the life of a man they believed was in medical distress. tonight, prince george county fire chief is standing by that decision. >> they did what they were trained to do. they did all of the right things based on the information they had in front of them. brad: tragically, a firefighter was killed. firefighter kevin swain critically injured when the man inside opened fire. sources say the 61-year-old had been asleep or affected by his medical condition and didn't hear the firefighters and his own brother who called for help knocking. and yelling. identifying themselves. he awoke to them breaking in his door. grabbing his legally owned gun

michelle: southwest said in a statement that crew member did follow protocol. he says after a 40-minute interrogation he was released and vows to never fly southwest again. jonathan: there is an investigation that is underway after a british airways pilot says his plane hit a drone while landing at london heath row airport. a very scary situation. that plane which was coming from geneva did land safely. british airways say the airs but a320 was inspected after the passengers got off. it was cleared and it resumed service. experts are worried about the future encounters where a drone could get caught in a plane's engine. this simulation from the virginia tech crash lab shows how a drone can destroy a jet engine in seconds. we have seen a lot of these. people with a drone out of the airport trying to get pictures. joining me via skype is the director of the virginia tech crash

we have seen so many people with drones at the airport interfering with planes. what do you have for them? >> yes. well, i hit the is like any other new technology. you know, by the time it takes for us to understand the technology better and make sure that the instances will be less. however, you know, depending on the size of the drone and the speed of the drone there is still considerable amount of threat we have to be mindful of. jonathan: what are you asking for introducing that might help the airlines as a whole deal with the things that might get sucked into one of their engines? >> sure. we are not necessarily introducing anything at this stage. with reworking on different strategies to be able to reduce catastrophic, potential catastrophic effects that impact might have. however, the f.a.a. is doing a really good job by regulating the air sa

for example don't operate near the airport or near buildings or populated areas. jonathan: perhaps you can give us an example of the mitigation you are talking about. what are you proposing? >> i'm not at liberty to discuss it now but it would be an opportunity for future designs to have this in mind when the design basically develop structures. right now, aircraft have the ability to mitigate foreign object impact. the way we see it the drones are a new kind of foreign objects. however they are more solid and compared to the birds that are soft matter. they, of course, need new strategy to be able to deal with them. jonathan: is there anything that can be done to reinforce the blades inside the engines in the aircraft to make so it they survive? michelle: certainly. it's a give and take. the heavier you make the structure, then the less payload the aircraft c

michelle: the district is filled with memorials and museums but the cost to renovate one of them is heading sky high. chris papst has an update on what it will take to fix up the air and space museum. >> 40 years after opening the air and the space museum is in need of serious renovations. the cost has come in at $410 million. ten time dos of construction in 1976. the 76 million visitors and this is billed as the third most popular museum in the world. but the heating, the air conditioning and the mechanical system in the giant building are original and need to be replaced. plus the outside marble is cracking and warping. four walkways were installed in late 2014. that
