springfield townhouse with the then 13 and 17-year-old daughters inside the home. harrington called police and a standoff ensued for 45 minutes when adam torres one of the first officers on the scene fired one shot at john geer, killing him almost instantly. it then took 17 months for fairfax county police department released any information about the case. now after the guilty plea of adam torres, it's nearly all come to an end. >> it will never be fully accepted. it's something that will be with me forever. it is moving along. hopefully i can get back to a more normal life. >> i wanted him to be convicted of a felony. i wanted him to serve time. i wanted him not to be a police officer anymore. i wanted mora and her daughter to have a sense that some justice was done. although it's not a perfect or an ideal situation. jeff: not perfect or jail but the widespread sentiment from the prosecutors and

family. adam torres did a make a statement in court saying, "i am truly sorry for my actions. i am heartbroken for mr. geer's children. there are no words i can say to adequately express my remorse." adam torres will be sentenced formally on june 24. at that point he will have served ten month of the 12-month jail sentence. so it will depend what the judge decides how much longer if at all he will serve of the jail time. coming up at 5:00, we hear from don geer, the father of john geer with reaction to the in-court apology from adam torres as well as some of the words that john geer said prior to being fatally shot. a lot more coming up. until then, jeff goldberg, abc7 news. michelle: breaking news out of montgomery county where police announced the person whose body was found in a hotel over the weekend was murdered. montgomery county reporter kevin lewis is live in gaithersburg with the details.

kevin? kevin: the red roof inn staff found the person before noon on saturday. we are told the individual was murdered. they are now identified as 22-year-old kenneth blakeny. the police just revealed that blakeny was a transgender female. and was most likely working as a prostitute when she was murdered. multiple stab wounds to the upper body we're told as the cause of death. we can tell you that police are looking at a number of factors including surveillance video and any type of evidence in the hotel room, whether that is a cell phone or any sort of evidence that may lead them back to the person that ended up actually killing this 22-year-old. blakeny does have a criminal record according to maryland k-search. we can tell you that the police are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for anyone who helps them find the killer or killers. much more at 5:00. for now we are liv

gaithersburgs at police headquarters. i'm kevin lewis. abc7 news. michelle: the search is on for a local firefighter who hasn't been seen since friday. that is when nicole mittendorf didn't show up for work in fairfax county. the woodbridge woman's car was later found in madison county in shenandoah national park. suzanne kennedy has the latest on the search. suzanne: this is where the search is taking place in the chantilly national park. a hundred searchers for the local, state, federal encies have been looking for nicole mittendorf since saturday. this is the scene from white oak canyon where authorities are searching in the air and on the ground. the last time anyone heard from the fairfax firefighter wednesday the 13th. she was reported missing two days later. state police won't comment on her state of mind or what she was doing in the park. police say they are searching in the area of te miles. >> it's really a steep and a rocky terrain out there. it's about probably from

the casket in the funeral procession. the firefighters trying to figure out exactly what happened to their colleague. there is no answer today as i knock on the same door firefighters broke through friday night. plywood covers the hole they made to get in to potentially save the life of a man they believed was in medical distress. tonight, prince george county fire chief is standing by that decision. >> they did what they were trained to do. they did all of the right things based on the information they had in front of them. brad: tragically, a firefighter was killed. firefighter kevin swain critically injured when the man inside opened fire. sources say the 61-year-old had been asleep or affected by his medical condition and didn't hear the firefighters and his own brother who called for help knocking. and yelling. identifying themselves. he awoke to them breaking in his door. grabbing his legally owned gun

dropping the weapon as he realized who he shot. he was released saturday. the shooting considered a horrible mistake but likely not a crime. tomorrow, the man must testify before a grand jury. the police still gathering evidence. >> circumstantially how it played out inside the home who was in what position, what was the position of the door, how many shots were fired to a certainty. those are the questions we need answers to. brad: the man we call the shooter is not charged and not being publicly identified. 61 years old. retired. lives alone at the house. when we come back at 5:00 we talk about how firefighters are considering changing the procedures when they approach houses like this. brad bell, abc7 news. michelle: thank you. not one but two countries working to recover after deadly earthquakes rocked residents.

another 350 dead in ecuador. rescuers around the world are heading to help. alison starling is at the live desk with the latest. alison: an awful situation. the 7.8-magnitude quake hit on saturday. aid workers are in place from mexico, bolivia and switzerland. we check in with the search and rescue team virginia tars one and they have not been activated in the area. john kerry says the u.s. will help in any way it can. >> i have gratitude for all the workers who haven't slept or eaten as they work hard to save lives. alison: this morning a 7-year-old girl

were rescued. international aid group are setting up plants to provide clean drinking water there. doctors are also in the area to help people cope with the disaster. michelle: the u.s. is airlifting water, and supplies to remote southern japan rocked by two earthquakes late week. another thousand injured and ten people are still missing today. 180,000 people were evacuated from the shelters over the weekend as the aftershocks hit the region. one caused a mud slide that made it harder to search for the survivors who still may be trapped. now coincidently, today marks 110 years since massive earthquake hit san francisco. memorial service was held in the city that included a wreath laying for the more than 3,000 people who die

jonathan: on storm watch, just unbelievable video from texas today after 16 inches of rain fell in the houston area in less than 24 hours. that is the result. the storm brought hail this morning. dallas, the brazso river is overflowing the banks. we have more on the storms coming up at 4:30. but in the meantime check in now with chief meteorologist doug hill. we have had glorious weather. this felt like summer. mid-80's in spots. as of 4:00, it's impressive. 87 in charlottesville. 86 in luray. winchester, martinsburg, manassas and fredericksburg. these are the numbers for the middle of june. this everything we will keep mostly clear skies and cool-off through the evening.

wrapping up a speech. former candidate carly fiorina was campaigning for cruz in bethesda. maryland primary is on the 26th. the other remaining candidates are in new york. they are campaigning for tomorrow's primary. huge delegate count there. rich for them. john kasich held a campaign in syracuse today. he is trying to close a 33-point gap between himself and trump. that is who will be introduced at the rally tonight by the buffalo bills head coach rex ryan. bernie sanders met with community leaders at a restaurant in the bronx. hillary clinton met with staffers at a new york hospital. michelle: the supreme court appears divided over the challenge to president obama's immigration actions. the eight justices are considering the 2014 executive order that could shield roughly 4 million people from deportation and make them eligible to work in the united states.

michelle: southwest said in a statement that crew member did follow protocol. he says after a 40-minute interrogation he was released and vows to never fly southwest again. jonathan: there is an investigation that is underway after a british airways pilot says his plane hit a drone while landing at london heath row airport. a very scary situation. that plane which was coming from geneva did land safely. british airways say the airs but a320 was inspected after the passengers got off. it was cleared and it resumed service. experts are worried about the future encounters where a drone could get caught in a plane's engine. this simulation from the virginia tech crash lab shows how a drone can destroy a jet engine in seconds. we have seen a lot of these. people with a drone out of the airport trying to get pictures. joining me via skype is the director of the virginia tech crash

we have seen so many people with drones at the airport interfering with planes. what do you have for them? >> yes. well, i hit the is like any other new technology. you know, by the time it takes for us to understand the technology better and make sure that the instances will be less. however, you know, depending on the size of the drone and the speed of the drone there is still considerable amount of threat we have to be mindful of. jonathan: what are you asking for introducing that might help the airlines as a whole deal with the things that might get sucked into one of their engines? >> sure. we are not necessarily introducing anything at this stage. with reworking on different strategies to be able to reduce catastrophic, potential catastrophic effects that impact might have. however, the f.a.a. is doing a really good job by regulating the air sa

for example don't operate near the airport or near buildings or populated areas. jonathan: perhaps you can give us an example of the mitigation you are talking about. what are you proposing? >> i'm not at liberty to discuss it now but it would be an opportunity for future designs to have this in mind when the design basically develop structures. right now, aircraft have the ability to mitigate foreign object impact. the way we see it the drones are a new kind of foreign objects. however they are more solid and compared to the birds that are soft matter. they, of course, need new strategy to be able to deal with them. jonathan: is there anything that can be done to reinforce the blades inside the engines in the aircraft to make so it they survive? michelle: certainly. it's a give and take. the heavier you make the structure, then the less payload the aircraft c

the high pressure system is the reason we enjoy preview of summer weather conditions. look at houston area. look at satellite all day long. this is just about to clear out of houston. they will get a break from the intense rainfall they have had. rainfall amounts look at the numbers in the past two hours. in houston area, 17.6 inches at little mound creek. astronomical amounts of rain. for us, not so much. we will see sunshine, breeze tomorrow. near 80. cooler. a lot of sunshine on wednesday and thursday near 70. friday just a chance of scattered showers and isolated rumble of thunder. we should clear out over the weekend. another frontal system could potentially bring a shower to saturday. but it is looking better for the weekend. temperatures will settle down to a fairly seasonal pattern here after a while. jonathan: we will take it. michelle: coming up at "abc7 news at 4:00" -- battling for business. the local high end shopping area fighting for the foothold in the face of competition. jonathan: but first, making the deadline. look at what you can do

michelle: the district is filled with memorials and museums but the cost to renovate one of them is heading sky high. chris papst has an update on what it will take to fix up the air and space museum. >> 40 years after opening the air and the space museum is in need of serious renovations. the cost has come in at $410 million. ten time dos of construction in 1976. the 76 million visitors and this is billed as the third most popular museum in the world. but the heating, the air conditioning and the mechanical system in the giant building are original and need to be replaced. plus the outside marble is cracking and warping. four walkways were installed in late 2014. that

doug: racing here. look at this time lapse. middle of the screen is i-66 there. it has been a beautiful day. throughout the entire day. we have seen a really fast rise in the temperatures from the 50's to the 80's. 81 degrees. it's gorgeous out. it's a pleasant night outdoors for activities as the temperatures are slow to fall off. in fact, the latest numbers across the maps now are 86 in manassas and fredericksburg. 81 in frederick. 78 in annapolis. keeping them cooler. 83 in baltimore in the hot spot. 87 now at the airport in charlottesville. tonight a slow drop in the temperatures. will stay mild overnight. coolest is 45 to 55. in addition to that we will be back to near 80 storm. it will become sunny, partly sunny through the day. becoming breezy. the cold front will come through but have clouds in the afternoon. so it will still be pleasant. it will turn cooler through the day on wednesday and thursday. but still around 70. the next chance of rain

tonight to end the streak. reporting at the wells fargo center, scott scott abraham, ab7 sports. michelle: thank you. the 120th running of the boston marathon in the books now. lemi berhanu hayle of ethiopia won the men's race in two hours and 12 minutes. jonathan: holy cow! michelle: i know. that is fast. fellow ethiopian atsede baysa was the woman's winner two hours and 29 minutes. it was her first boston marathon. for mcfadden of clarksville, maryland, it was her fourth straight win in the woman's push rim race. that is a huge accomplishment. jonathan: the race was poignant for the survivor of the bombing from three years ago. adrianne haslet-davis one of those survivors signed up to run the race this year. she lost her leg in the bombing. this is her first boston marathon. she ra

four hours and 47 minutes. she is still on the course right now as we speak. remember they start later than the elite runners. actor mark wahlberg was at the finish line for today's race filming a new movie based on the 2013 attacks. michelle: you were in boston covering the marathon the year the attack happened. so many of us recall where you were. you were close to the finish line. jonathan: i was on the finish line. for eight years in piston i covered it every year. it's uneventful, great day. spectacular weather, great runners and great athletes. on that particular day we were wrapped up and i went back to the finish line with a field producer and photographer to do interviews with people who come across. all of a sudden the bomb went off not more than across the street from us. it was denning. you saw a lot of people go down and run away. up the street another bomb went off and you put two and two together quick. i don't

jonathan: "7 on your side" to fight back against crime. new clue to a bank robber in the region. jennifer donelan has the details. jennifer: a bank robber featured on "7 on your side"'s wall of justice has struck again. the forever loyal bandit robbed five local banks in two years and then he went quiet for months. the f.b.i. says he showed up again this weekend in falls church. saturday morning the man walked in bank on leesburg. he passed a note and got the cash. he's nicknamed forever loyal bandit. he has a logo on a t-shirt that he wore in a couple of the robberies in 2013, and 2014.

premium network epic. jonathan: city center blossomed to high-end shopping center since opening in d.c. a year ago. but up the road in friendship height stores feel the pull as the shoppers head in the city for the pricier places. kevin lewis will look now at what all of this could mean for the strip that used to be home for the snazier stores. michelle: they are facing stiff competition since the city center opened. >> the dior store ditched the long-time wisconsin avenue home. and moved to the glitzy new mixed use development downtown. >> i like the city center because it's smaller. i don't like to walk around that much. there are less cars. >> real estate moguls with pricy property in and around friendship heights are exploring ways to keep customers coming. plans include creating a
