>> good morning. i'm ryan smith. >> i'm diane macedo. we begin with the race for the white house and the front-runners easily sailing to victory in their home state of new york. >> hillary clinton snapped bernie sanders's seven-state winning streak scoring nearly 60% of the votes. her triumph put her 80% of the way to clinching the nomination. on the republican side, donald trump also won with roughly 60%. he swept most of the delegates and made it mathematically impossible for ted cruz to win the nomination before the convention. >> trump celebrated at trump tower in manhattan appearing mosh presidential than ever. he talked about building a stronger military, getting rid of obamacare and keeping jobs in the u.s. and complained about the delegate selection process but refrained from name calling. > clinton appealed to sanders' supporters telling them "there's much more that unites us than divides us. it's your voice, your vote. abc's liz k

the clinton campaign. good morning, liz. >> good morning. >> reporter: this was a true victory rally for hillary clinton. she celebrated her big win in the new york primary here at the sheraton in midtown manhattan. there was a live band, a bar, a feeling before she was projected the winner this was a night to celebrate and it didn't disappoint. clinton took the stage thanking her supporters who came out strong for her in her adopted home state. >> thank you, new york. today, you proved once again there's no place like home. you know, in this campaign, we've won in every region of the country. from the north to the south, to the east to the west, but this one's personal. >> reporter: clinton also said she's entered the homestretch of the democratic nomination and

that victory is in sight. as far as her strategy moving forward, her campaign aides say she's still focusing on the primary. including the next contest up, pennsylvania. she campaigns there today. ryan and diane? >> big night for secretary clinton. thanks, liz. bernie sanders is now back in his home state after a couple of campaign stops in pennsylvania. >> as he touched down in vermont, he congratulated hillary clinton on her victory but complained about voting irregularities that led to an audit. he also expressed concern that independents can't vote in the new york primary. more from abc's mary alice parks. >> reporter: sanders said he thought they would do just fine, that he thought they would do better than expected. even though he woke up in times square, the senator flew almost immediately to pennsylvania that doesn't vote till next tuesday. he had a rally in erie before coming here to state college for a big event with what has been his bread and butter, college students at penn state. during his remarks which was largely his ve t

campaign speech, senator sanders also talked specifically about the strict closed primary rules in the state of new york. >> it is absurd that in brooklyn, new york, where i was born actually, tens of thousands of people as i understand it, have been purged from the voting rolls. >> he said he believed there would need to be fundamental changes in the way that new york does business going forward. he said that he feels like independent voters in the state which he has done really well with in the past had essentially been disenfranchised. ryan, diane? >> thank you, mary alice. a top sanders add viewser says he still has a path to the nomination but as we look at the math this morning, it will be quite an uphill battle. >> clinton won at least 169 new york delegates giving her an overall total of nearly 1900. that's compared to about 1

donald trump picked up nearly all of new york's 95 republican delegates. denying ted cruz an opportunity to clinch the nomination before the convention. trump now has 845 delegates. cruz has 559, and john kasich is trailing with 147. so the candidates are looking ahead to the next five races next tuesday. the front-runners are breathing a sigh of relief after a string of bruising losses. >> abc's rick klein tells us what it all means. good morning, rick. >> reporter: diane and ryan, new york, new york, home, sweet, home for both hillary clinton and donald trump. ♪ and find i'm king of the hill top of the heap ♪ ♪ new york, concrete jungle which dreams are made of, there's nothing you can't do ♪ >> reporter: their shared home state doing exactly what they needed to do, deliver big

their candidacies essentially back on track. what new york does not do is clinch the nomination for either one of them. they will have spirited challenges ahead. for donald trump despite his delegate sweep in new york, a contested convention a very real, maybe even a likely possibility going forward. and for hillary clinton, having bernie sanders part of this race but both of them beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, both able to exalt with a victory in their home states and right now, the momentum that had been shifting to their challengers is now back with the front runners. donald trump and hillary clinton now riding higher than ever. diane and ryan. >> thanks so much. we'll have much more on the race in our next half hour. don't miss the latest "gma" town hall event. ted cruz was on the show earlier this week. tomorrow it's hillary clinton. >> this morning's other big story aftershocks continue to hit the quake zone in ecuador as the death toll passes 500. hope is fading any more survivors will be pulled from the rubble. efforts are now focusing on restoring electricity, removing

debris and burying the dead. president obama spoke with the president of ecuador to offer condolences and help. >> let's bring it back home where at least eight people have drowned in the houston area some after ignoring warnings not to drive on flooded roadways. more flooding is likely as area reservoirs are approaching record high levels. abc's phillip mena has the latest. >> reporter: the nation's fourth-largest city still swamped by what scientists are calling a 1 in 500-year flood. emergency officials say they've made nearly 2,000 water rescues in the last 36 hours, including 45 residents of a nursing home. and hundreds at apartment complexes, pulled from the rising floodwaters. for the last 20 hours, rescue workers have been going by boat to get people out of the flood zone and into safety. officials here say they have lost count of how many trips they've made. >> moms with kids, y'all come up first. >> reporter: by the truckload, parents, children, pets rushed to safet

more than 1,000 homes flooded. 240 billion gallons of water falling in 24 hours has even animals struggling to survive. cows corralled by airboats, herded to safety. nearly 100 horses from one stable close to drowning. frantic rescues getting them to dry land. >> for me, these aren't just horses, i mean, they're part of the family. >> reporter: at least six people are dead from these floods. nearly all victims of driving into floodwaters. making families all the more thankful to be alive. >> you feel helpless. you just feel so helpless. and you're just happy. we're a good family. god answers prayers. >> reporter: the system that's bringing all this rain is barely moving. and with more rain on the way, it doesn't take much to trigger flash flooding like this. phillip mena, abc news, houston. phillip, thank you. over to cuba now where a long-time leader fidel castro has made what may be his last public appearance.

he told members of the communist party that he will soon die but urged them to continue his ideals. castro noted that he will be 90 soon. it was his first public appearance in many years. the communist party re-elected his younger brother raul, 84 years old, for another five-year term. >> johnny manziel making what many consider to be a stunning statement. he says he's expecting to play in the nfl this coming season. well-known agent drew rosenhaus has now dropped manziel as a client because he says manziel failed to make changes in his lifestyle. manziel says he hopes to "take care of the issues in front of him in hopes of being picked up." he was cut by the cleveland browns last month. nike dropped its endorsement deal with him and tomorrow prosecutors in texas are presenting his domestic violence assault case to a grand jury. >> now to a football player likely to get plenty of cheers. come the fall. the thing is, he won't hear most of them. >> this is such a great story. his name is todd

allstate wide receiver number five in nebraska two seasons in a row. that got the attention of coaches at the university of nebraska. >> he we're wears hearing aids. he's lost about 80% of his hearing. this summer, he will join the huckers as a preferred walk-on which means he's all but likely to make the team. >> this is incredible. he's got so many other skills he can use to catch the ball. you think if he can't hear, how does he know what's happening. playing wide receiver is about route running. being in the right place at the right time. if he can match-up with his quarterback, he can have a great career. >> he's going to have lots of people in the stands cheering him on. the first game is supposed to be in september. he's got time to practice, of course. but a lot of people are wishing him well and hoping to see him in the jersey. >> good stuff. we're cheering for you, man. coming up, the new fee that airlines are hoping that you're going to cough up just to avoid sitting in that dreaded middle seat. why a growing number of airlines are now considering window and aisle seats a luxury. >> it was one of her 73 questions. taylor swift tells "vogue" the

>> i don't like it. >> reporter: and if you're hoping to avoid that dreaded middle seat, you may have to pay up. southwest, which doesn't assign seats, recently increased the price of its early boarding by 20%. now charging passengers $15 each way to board the plane first to improve their chances of getting a good seat. with delta's least expensive option, basic economy, you can't select your seat until 24 hours before you travel. when the most coveted aisle and window seats are inevitably taken by people who paid a higher fare. a round trip ticket from new york to chicago will cost you $40 more if you want to choose your seat ahead of time. industry insiders tell us american and united will be following suit in the coming months. rebecca jarvis, abc news, new york. >> hmm. >> i think you cringed more at that one than the guy in the skyscraper. >> i can't stand that for a
