performer, a songwriter. we spoke with the owner of some records right down the street. he talked about why prince, prince, the pop star, such enormous magnitude touched so many people. had so many fans. this is what he had to say. >> he crossed so many genres. rock guys liked him, disco liked him, funk liked him, punk rockers liked him. he crossed genres for sure. stephen: he also said that he believes prince as do a lot of people prince ranks up there with the very top of the roster of musicians and the influence on music. here at the black cat they are mourning. we talk with a man who actually pet prince. d.j. dread who worked with prince last summer. coming up later on, on abc7 news we will hear his reflections on the passing of a man so many people call a musical

reporting live, stephen tschida, abc7 news. jonathan: thanks. fans were flocking to paisley park as the news of prince's passing spread. some holding each other and others crying. others took to social media to express condolences and share the pain. horace holmes picks up the team coverage with the newsroom from that part of the story. so many performances that he put out there, including the super bowl that was epic. great stuff. horace: one recently in june in washington, d.c. people have been posting about that. social media is abuzz. 4 million tweets on twitter. banjo captured half a million posts. it's one of the top trending items on facebook. look at the responses. d.c. bureau chief sam ford is live outside capitol hill montessori with what they have to say. sam? sam: michelle, this is one of three d.c. schools where there were lead levels in the water that were above the federal guidelines of 15 parts per billion. parents were stunned to find out they were 20 times above the acceptable level but they did not block it off to prevent students from drinking it. payne and minor elementary school had similar problems. one thought at payne was over 500 times the acceptable level. that is believed to be an anomaly. what has the montessori parents most upset the water tests were originally conducted last august and nobody told them abt

annandale. what happened? suzanne: this is the community where the mother lived with the three children. yesterday she asked a man who police describe as her boyfriend to take her three children ages ten, 15, two -- 10, 15, 2 to school and daycare. the two older children made it. the young girl, the baby girl did not. authorities are telling us this is what happened yesterday. the toddler was left in the vehicle from 8:00 until 3:00 in the afternoon. at the time the temperature was rising and eventually got into the low 70's. it wasn't until the 31-year-old went to pick up the children's mother at her job at pentagon city when he realized what had happened. >> he gets to arlington and getting out of the car. looks in the backseat, realizes the child is there. goes to attend to her and realizes she is unresponsive. immediately calls 911. suzanne: this is a large apartmentc

knocking on all of doors. we did not find the family. nor did we find anyone who knew of the circumstances. despite the fact that the baby girl had been sitting in a car in this exact parking lot where i am right now for the majority of the day yesterday. no charges filed but up to the commonwealth attorney once the investigation is over to determine whether or not the 31-year-old man will be held criminally responsible. reporting live in annandale, suzanne kennedy, abc7 news. michelle: very sad story. thank you. arlington county police are trying to figure out if two cases of children being approached by strangers are related. the incident happened three weeks apart in different sections of the county. alison starling is at the "live desk" with the details. alison: the latest incident happened tuesday, a couple of days ago in the 5200 block of north 30th street near yorktown high school if you are familiar with the area. police say a ma

pickup truck tried to lure three children into his vehicle. so the kids were outside. they were playing hide and seek when it happened. police say they were between 8 and 11 yars old and they were able to run away and get help. police just a vague description at this point of who approached an 11-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl in south arlington. that was earlier this month. those kids were out on a playground. the one behind the arbor heights apartment on 8th street south. in that case the children also describe the suspect as driving a dark colored older model pickup truck. if you have any information on either of the cases or, of course, if your child is approached in any way, you are asked to call police. jonathan? jonathan: all right. thanks. look at that. the white house today. but looks like there are clouds through the area. michelle: gray day. but still warm. jonathan: the stretch of gorgeous dry weather has been nice for us but not so great

jonathan: check out the video from prince george's county. this is a complete loss. fully engulfed in flames. on route 301 in brandywine. assistant fire chief demarcus ware took -- chief darren ware took this moments from he pulled the woman from the car. he and tyrone wells were returning from the funeral of the fallen firefighter john ulmschneider yesterday. they spotted smoke coming out of the car. they got to the driver and got him out of the car before it turned into that. michelle: time for a check of the traffic situation. jamie sullivan with details. looking like a slow

j.w. parkway. 95 in maryland. metro had issues in the midday with the train malfunctions, single tracking, delays. there are no issues right now on metro. keep you updated with that. back to you. jonathan: all right. thanks. texas is on storm watch and they wish they weren't. look at the pictures. this is out of houston. rising water is forcing a texas city to evacuate the residents. the mayor of wharton called for mandatory evacuation after the national weather service forecasted the colorado river will crest at 48 feet tonight. to give you perspective, the river bank considered at full stage is 20 feet. so it is considered a major flood stage at 43 feet. part of texas inundated with

and deadly flooding in some areas. michelle: another sight to see. this in china. a school sporting event was cut short when a whirlwind formed in the middle of the field. the third one formedded and forced a student airborne before tossing him to the ground. the student was sent to the hospital with minor injuries. i chatted to you about this, doug and you said they're not uncommon. doug: they're common. but those of that velocity are on the rare side. michelle: pick a person up. doug: usually 25 to 30-mile-per-hour winds. jonathan: i grew up in the desert and we saw them all the time. but didn't pick people up. doug: different meteorology involved in that.

firefighter alive. they're not saying much when it comes to the search for nicole mittendorff. we are joined by madison county where it's coming to the end of the sixth day. jeff goldberg? jeff: probably a couple of hours from the search coming in. we are at cecan't rock overlook at skyline drive at shenandoah national park. searchers for six days and today have been deep in the terrain here. to show you the challenge they are dealing with. steep cliffs everywhere. jagged rocks and boulders. dramatic and big fire in the park so the smoke in the sky adding to the challenges just a bit. the command post for the search is a big meadows camp ground about four miles from where we are standing now. 80 people part of the search crew today including two kit rescue teams and a helicopter crew. since this search began, crews covered 15 square miles from the area we are now to

the vehicle was discovered. she called in sick to work last wednesday and was reported missing friday after not showing up for a scheduled shift. few answers in the search which is centered here in the park. >> the terrain is incredible. we had people repelling the canyon earlier in the week. we had drives looking in the pools there, in the canyons. it's a sad situation anytime we have a lost person. this is what we do. jeff: over the weekend as the search continues, 30 members of the search and rescue crew are expected to join that search to go along with the virginia police. the national park service. volunteers all part of the search fanning out across shenandoah national park. continuing to say from the virginia state police there is no evidence of anything suspicious in the disappearance of nicole mittendorff. live

park, jeffs, abc7 news. jonathan: now following a developing story, president obama heading to london after being in saudi arabia today. in the meeting the president asked the gulf allies to increase the role in the fight against the islamic state. the white house also said that the leader spoke about a hopeful cease-fire in yemen and potential peace talks in kuwait. michelle: settlement today for millions of drivers caught in the volkswagen emission investigation. "7 on your side" consumer investigator kimberly suiters is here with details. kim? kimberly: michelle, to sell or the fix? that is the question for consumers tonight. volkswagen admitting the diesel cars were programmed to cheat u.s. emissions tests. it is making the offer to car owners. the company says you can either sell the cars back to the company or have them fixed. if you sell it will likely be the value of the car before the scandal erupted. we are talking about diesels,

michelle: this just in from fairfax county. lake brad doc high school student died. 24 hours ago police were called to the school where c.p.r. was being performed on brenda soto. just 16 years old. she was rushed to inova fairfax hospital where she died. abc7 is working now to find out what went wrong inside the school. we have more at 11:00. jonathan: we continue the remembrance of prince. he die today. found dead at the paisley park compound in chanhassen, minnessota. he was just 57 years old. we caught up with donnie simpson who knew the artist personally. this shocked and sadden the world but especially for those who knew the artists. tom: absolutely. we're inside the 345gic 102.3 studios that are

drive time show to prince and remembering him for the music and who he was a person. the host of the afternoon drive time is donnie simpson. he was your friend. what was he like? >> he was shy and quiet. but once you get to know him, he is shy and very quiet. private. he does talk. first time i met him he said hey, donnie. i was talking to someone in the organization. he said that? that's great! later we had conversations. he was not shy on stage so is it surprising that he was that in person? >> absolutely, absolutely.

in a lot of ways sometimes i feel like you can't truly be great if it doesn't have a piece of you in it. prince was always in his music. one of a kind. always about music. all over the place. so many different styles. you know? tom: any stories since you got to know him personally any story of you and he interacting you will take with you? >> yeah. this is the coolest story. i had him on my tv show. let me back it up. i had david bowie on my tv show. video soul. and after the show we were talking and i was telling him i was going to minneapolis that friday. he says well, i'm playing minneapolis friday. you ought to come to the show. i said cool. so i grabbed my friend, my boy sugar ray leonard. we go to minneapolis that friday. we go to the show. they had us seated at the

in the middle of the auditorium. so we walk in. i'm going past the seat and i bump the lady in front of me. i said, "excuse me, ma'am." and prince turns around. [laughter] he says, "hey, donnie." "hey, prince. sorry about that." "it's cool." he said he was having a party at paisley park and told me and ray to come. cool. we'll do that. we go to the party. it's very small party. it's me, ray, prince and his dancer cat, david bowie and some of his band members and that's it. like a dozen people at this party. it was the coolest night. we listen to the black album which he had not released at that time. everybody knew about it and wanted it. he wouldn't release it. that is what he is playing at the party that night. the cool thing too that night, the d.j. playing it was telling us that with prince, you never know what he is going to request to be played that night.

of the white house. joce sterman, what does he face? joce: the sentence came down ten minutes ago. federal judge sentencing douglas hughes to 120 days in the bureau of prisons, one of their facilities and one year of super vised release. this is an interesting sentencing hearing this afternoon. took four hours, with douglas hughes comparing himself to civil rights leaders martin luther king junior, rosa park, harriet tubman, authors, all kind of people. the judge disagreed saying this is not a nonviolent act of civil disobedience. even though they claimed it was a license violation. we are talking about something from april 15, 2015. hughes landing a gyrocopter on the grounds of the capitol. the judge was critical of his defense in this, that he notified the government letting them know he would be taking this flight. when in reality he sent 80 e-mails ot

media and sent one e-mail to authorities. that e-mail actually went to a campaign site for barack obama back from 2012. she basically said he did not make an effort to notify anyone about that flight. prosecutors argue that he took a flight path from gettysburg to d.c., putting other people at risk. coming close to the washington monument. close to numerous flights. putting lots of people at risk. the judge said he is showed disregard for other people's safety. he was asking for that, the defense asked for probation. went in the middle of this and saying it was a unique case and she had to try to find something that seemed appropriate to deter anyone who might think it was responsible way for protest issues. he did break laws but it wasn't related to the cause he was seek
