skinny" on this friday, april 29th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> my favorite part of that was the little janet jackson clip. gives you a sense of how long ago that was with the little "miss you much" in there. >> a little flashback friday action. >> when barry met michele. >> we begin with a new round of severe weather wreaking are havoc from the southern plains all the way to the mid atlantic. >> in the south, rains have triggered flash floods along the gulf coast. take a look at this scene, by the way, this is in gulfport, mississippi where up to 10 inches of rain inundated entire communities turning roads into rivers and forcing lifeboat rescues for strand residents. >> to the north, powerful straight line winds and tornadoes cut a whole path of destruction across parts of the midwest. at least 18 tornadoes have been reported from california to kentucky over the

uprooting trees, downing power lines and destroying homes and other buildings. >> take a look at the radar this morning. you can see those storms are still far everywhere dissipating. that major system still marching east. stretching nearly 1200 miles from the southeast up into the ohio valley and great lakes region. >> and those storms are still causing major problems in the south along the gulf coast, triggering dramatic water rescues. abc's phillip mena has the latest from gulfport, mississippi. >> reporter: tornado sirens on the mississippi gulf coast. lightning and heavy rain. the flash flood emergency unfolding on live tv. >> it's happening right now. i'm looking at it. someone's being rescued from their car in the ditch. >> reporter: another motorist running through the flood getting that window down and pulling a woman to safety. >> you can definitely tell that this is a dangerous situation out here. >> reporter: keep your eye on that traffic light as howling winds send it crashing down. >> whoa. there went one. >> reporter: up to 10 inches of rain swamping streets. lf

tornadoes, all those modes of severe weather again possible along with very heavy rain which could trigger more flash flooding. lots of tropical moisture meeting up with dry air. much of oklahoma and texas will be under the threat zone this afternoon and also into tonight. northeast, the showers much wider. they will be problematic in terms of causing slippery conditions travel delays along the 95. more rain this weekend with the severe weather continuing in the deep south. back to you. >> thank you. turning now to politics and what was a wild scene outside a trump rally in southern california. >> hundreds of protesters jammed the streets in costa mesa last night. they stomped on squad cars, hurled rocks and blocked a highway entrance ramp as police in riot gear swooped in. many of them were protesting trump's stance on immigration. inside the rally, trump spoke to 18,000 people and he brought

families of victims who were murdered by undocumented immigrants. >> we don't have a country anymore. you know, i'm looking at statistics where your crime numbers are so crazy they're going through the roof. we can't have it anymore. >> trump is still keeping an eye on indiana ahead of the primary but will remain in california for today to address state gop officials. ted cruz is fending off a fiery attack. this time it's not from the donald trump. >> it's coming from former house speaker john boehner who spoke fondly of trump during a talk at stanford university calling him his texting buddy. but when students asked him about ted cruz, that's when he had a few choice words for the senator. how about ted cruz? >> lucifer in the flesh. in washington, i have as many democrat friends as i do republican friends. i get along with almost everybody. but i've never worked with a more miserable son of a [ bleeped

>> the man accused in the road rage shooting death of former new orleans saints player will smith has been indicted on a second degree murder charge. cardell hayes also faces attempted murder for wounding smith's wife. hayes says he was not the aggressor and pleaded not guilty to all charges. smith was shot seven times and his wife hit twice. investigators in minnesota are reportedly trying to determine if prince's death was caused by an overdose. a source tells the "associated press" they're also looking into whether a doctor was prescribing the singer drugs during his final weeks and if the doctor was on the plane with prince when it had to make an emergency stop a week before he died. meanwhile, authority have obtained a search warrant to prince's estate, but the details will be sealed for now. and the maker of an antidote for opiate overdoses is offering the medication to all high schools for free. narcan can quickly reverse the dangerous effects of an overdose by pre

reckless atv and motorcycle riders by using the riders' own social media accounts to bust them. one case is 21-year-old gabriel junior of new haven. police used videos he posted himself to his instagram account to track him down. he now faces more than two dozen reckless driving violations. >> it almost looks like it defies gravity there, those moves. >> no thank you. >> and sensibility, as well. >> let's move on now to a frightening situation at the massive airport in atlanta. a couple of jets that were packed with passengers getting a little too close for comfort. >> one of them was about to take off, but then the pilot had to slam on the brakes. let's get more now from abc's david kerley who covers aviation for us. >> reporter: at america's busiest airport, a mistake which could have been disastrous for the jet taking off. >> it was like all of it was compacted in this one little 15-second bit of sheer terror. >> reporter: the delta jet headed to miami was speeding to takeoff, already

miles an hour, when suddenly, another delta jet is crossing the runway. the atlanta controller ordering a takeoff abort. the pilot slams on the brakes. the aircraft were just over a mile apart, but only seconds at that speed. the controller knew he blundered. >> sorry about that. that was my mistake, guys. >> okay, yeah, we're going to exit here. >> reporter: the pilots called it an administrative mistake. >> obviously, stopping and having your airplane from a high rate of speed in a short period of time is going to heat up the brakes. that's what it's done. >> it was, i think, a little bit nerve wracking for the pilots as well as everybody on that plane. >> the pilots let the brakes cool down at the gate. delta mechanics checked them out and the same aircraft with the passengers did take off for miami. david kerley, reagan washington airport. >> what a frightening scene in people afraid of flying are scared up
