police say a suspect is now in custody and our stephen tschida is live with all the details we just learned from the chief. stephen. stephen: jummy, the chief talked with us about five minutes ago. let's bring you up to date what's going down here on nannie helen burrows and minnesota avenue. you can see the bus over at the far end of the gas station. that is where the person who is believed to have car jacked or hijacked this bus struck a pedestrian here at the gas station. that pedestrian was killed on impact. if you look over to the left, you can see the chief, representatives of metro transit police as well as the investigation under way. this went down about 10:30 from here. not far from here a man got around the bus. he lingered around the driver. he eventually attacked the driver with some kind of web, possibly a screwdriver or pliers. the driver fled the bus. the man, the suspect here took off with the bus, drove it here

where he boarded the bus and then drove up into the gas station. that is where he struck this pedestrian fatally. the suspect was taken into custody. he was described as very agitated, very angry. we believe he was also taken to the hospital. the very latest here in northeast d.c., one person killed, suspect in custody after allegedly car jacking or hijacking a mess row bus. that's the latest, jummy. back to you. jummy: stephen will bring us new details on this story as our broadcast continues. in the meantime, we switch to metro and the probable cause of the deadly metro smoke incident coming to light. right now the national transportation safety board holding a meeting on the finding from its investigation into that january, 2015, incident. they also released some brand new video of the arcing incident at mcpherson square back in march. and our sam sweeney is in the newsroom with the new information we're learning. sam. sam: jummy, this is a disturbing report from the national transportation safety

program is fundamentally flawed, has been for years and continues to be a serious problem. one ntsb board member went as far to say that wmata has a learning disability. take a look at some incident of the l'enfant incident showing dozens of safety failure. water leaks played a major role in the smoke incident that took place back in january of 2015. the report goes on to say, if metro had stopped all trains at the time of the smoke incident, the train never would have been stuck in that smoke-filled tunnel, possibly saving that woman's life. the ntsb also states, metro has no written procedure to properly use ventilation fans inside tunnels, and then it goes on to say that the train operator could have shut down the ventilation system onboard that train to avoid those cars filling with smoke. also alarming, there are no smoke detectors in these tunnels. metro relied on passengers and train operators to notify metro of smoke

61 and 62 degrees respectively. so today we'll keep it mostly cloudy. we won't be surprised to areas west of washington to peak in the 70's. we'll get back to rain and maybe an isolated thunderstorm for this afternoon. right now doppler radar pretty much a clean sweep. a few little sprinkles here and there. this afternoon more rain definitely in our forecast. we'll fill in the details for you in a moment, jummy. jummy: as mentioned, the cleanup continues right now after those storms last night just battered the y. they brought baseball--sized hail, flooding and even strong winds. many people waking up this morning with trees just littering the roadways. some of those trees landed on cars. the owner of one car spoke exclusively to our john gonzalez about this pretty scary experience. john: you know, some in these southeast d.c. neighborhoods there is debris all over the place. we heard folks say they felt

years in this area. take a look at this fence to this home, no match for the massive trees that came crashing down, ripping down powerlines along the way. the ground just so saturated from all that rainfall and the severe winds, well, it created quite a mess and well, if you think the fence is impressive, take a look at these vehicles. three cars with significant damage. two of them really a total loss. you have one vehicle, the moon roof is shattered. this vehicle here, we spoke to the owner last night. he told us he just bought the car a few weeks ago. it in fact still has the temporary tags. just an unfortunate situation. it has pancaked, just flattened. across the street you have a nissan. same situation. tree came down on it. the vehicles were parked. no one was inside. >> the tree was right above the roots and for some reason yesterday when i got out of my car, i said to myself, i hope the tree

they're much more predictable and they will come in waves. you get the hail. this was popping up dissecretly. the hailstones bigger and bigger. the lightning, the sky conditions. just take a minute and share with some of the work our viewers were kind enough to ake pictures and send to us at pics@wjla.com. this is on the bay. got scooped up handfuls of the hail that went through. this is marble size. not far away in rockville, peter sent this bucket of hail and these were about the size, we had reports of golf ball. a fuel baseball-sized hail stones, stuff you don't see very often. and joseph sent this. he's sent a couple of incredible pictures that was rolling across the nation's capital. a lightning strike. it was just a bizarre set of storms and kept popping. i can tell you that the threat for

this is no longer in existence here. however, we're going to have more opportunities for rain. maybe enough rain to cause localized flooding in spots in a few days and can't rule out a few isolated thunderstorms. we'll be talking about this storm for a long time. coming up on abc 7 news at 4:00, 5:00 and vi, a lot more videos and pictures of hail. at the moment fairly quiet. drab and damp with temperatures in the upper 60's. radar not showing much except a couple showers here and there and sprinkles. we are looking at the cloud cover off to the west. in this air mass, we have two cold fronts draped over our area. neither one of them very strong, but just enough to agitate the atmosphere and behind the first front, the air is sinking a bit so it clears a bit and then we have a second one. so this combination with a little bit of sunshine breaking out to the west may pop up a few heavier showers or isolated thunderstorms as we head through the afternoon hours. starting to see some of that over eastern west virginia.

she lost nearly 75 pounds but has since regained 32 of them. >> i didn't people know i was on "the biggest loser" because i don't look like that anymore. scott: they followed contestants from the show. they found all but one of them gained much of the weight back. while scientists point out further research is needed, they concluded the contestants' own body were to blame. according to the study, they had normal metabolisms for their size before the show but after the show they continued to slow down, the mechanism for them to return to the original weight, further compounding the problem, researchers found the a p had plummets levels of hormone that leaves them hungry. >> it is metabolic adaptation. >> and producers of "the biggest loser"
