kimberly: millions have been spent laying down crum rubber fields in fairfax county. parents want to know why the projects are moving forward before key health questions are answered. when the school district would not talk to wes, 7 on your side investigator joce sterman did the next best thing, she got their e-mail, 722 pages worth. joce:

the charge to stop crumb rubber fields in fairfax county because there could be a link with cancer. >> it is the extent to which the exposure to the carcinogens is harming children. heatingth the debate up, what is fairfax county school's take. rwe looked through hundreds of e-mails to find out. on the many staffers say that crumb fields are safe with no evidence of danger, last month the county director recommended testing. is millions has been sent, questions have been raised, and now we are asking, oh, is this safe? >> yes, these questions should have an addressed from the start. joce: it appears some of the district were initially reluctant to support other options. one says we do not

we intend to look at other studies. but no study was done, just a review of existing research. after current sirs were expressed, one staffer said my primary concern is it is not advisable to put the project on the street and have the contractor spend time and money creating estimates if we are not moving ahead with the project. how do you feel when some but he says, listen, we cannot make the contractors angry about what is happening? >> it is your worst fear. you hope that is on the case, but when you have documents showing that is the case, that is the primary concern, it makes me feel terrible. >> i don't think anybody in the school system will tell you you are comparing the health and safety of kids, the health and safety comes first. she is the president of the fairfax county school board, fielding questions from parents concerned about crumb. >> we just don't have an answer

joce: but the district continued to install fields based on science they say showed no conclusive links, even though messages show talks of putting some products on hold in the south county. ultimately, those fields got crumb rubber. buthey considered it, ultimately chose to ignore the health concerns. that's discouraging. joce: they say the district was comfortable forging ahead. they are now awaiting the results of federal testing by the end of the year. what with the district due at the federal study says coming yes, there is a link between crumb rubber and cancer? you have invested tens of millions of dollars in this. >> if it turns out there is really a health and safety concern, it's not about money, we have to fix that. asked fairfax county scho
