jonathan: breaking news is in regard to the metro. michelle: the battle over safety with the department of transportation takes a new turn. jonathan: transportation reporter brianne carter joining us live. what is this all about? brianne: well just within the last 90 minutes we have learned the f.t.a. has written a letter to the general manager paul wiedefeld urging them to take immediate action. from what the f.t.a. calls urgent safety maintenance to reduce risk of fire and smoke incidents along the system. brianne: in the letter they identified three section of the system including right here at east falls church. they say the system that needs immediate maintenance in the sections includes from falls church to ballson along the orange and the silver line. the two other from potomac avenue to just outside the stadium-armory station blue, orange and silver lines. from medical center to van ness on the red line. the work

on the tracks, including the third rail, drain cleaning, replacing insulators and third rail covers. many of these are part of the system we have seen and talked about with the recent problems including that recent arcing insulator last week at federal center southwest. and a series of red line issues that prompted a lot of maintenance called for by general manager paul wiedefeld. the f.t.a. says between april 23 and may 10 it investigated 15 safety events including nine with fire and smoke along metro. now this comes at this hour as we are dealing with another problem outside of the stadium-armory station. we arches that single tracking is impact -- we understand that single tracking is impacting riders on stretches of the system as a result of that. from a possible arcing insulator we understand crews are now responding to, to investigate. we have a crew sent to that as well. we reached out to metro on both issues. we'll have more at

reporting live, brianne carter, abc7 news. jonathan: thank you. right now at 4:00, a school burglary and you are looking at it. all caught on camera. michelle: mask men head out with computer, ecooboards and more. this happened a weekend in april. jonathan: this is a school in decatur street northwest. nearest school is barnard elementary school. richard reeve is joining us trying to find out who the masked men are. are they closer to catching who they are? richard: they are still looking. that is why they release the video. for a lot of us the school is enclave of safety. but this school was a target by the four mask thieves who struck in the middle of the night. they are still at large but they were caught on good surveillance video. surveillance video show four figures dashing down the hall. two suspects are wearing ski

going from door to door almost as if taking inventory. from the end of the hallway they wheel out what appears to be a photo copier in its box. another shows a man with computer parts, large-size monitors. police say the thieves broke into the school through a glass door. this is a school rigged for security. there are gates outside. fellow checking points once you get inside. but that is during the day. at night, they appear to roam the street freely and take what they want. all caught by surveillance camera. >> what do you think of the video? >> it's crazy. outrageous. first and foremost trying to figure out how they got in the school. they have gates. they are locked. so unless they broke a window and went to the side, i know one of the doors over there glass. curious to know how they got in. richard: there is a lot of glass in this building. we are told it was a glass door that the bad gu

[explosion] jonathan: well, you can never forget that. you can almost feel the impact of the blast. 2013, the fertilizer plant exploding and now police stepped in and ruled what happened here as a crime. michelle: 15 people were killed. including 12 first responders in west texas. jonathan: that blast was strong enough to register on seismograph, the machines that track earthquakes. this was a 2.1-magnitude quake because of what the blast was. michelle: investigators say finding the cause was a process of elimination. >> the fire has been ruled as incendiary. this means this fire was a criminal

a.t.f. is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for the information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the crime. michelle: it took 400 interviews and more than three years of research. much of it happening at the a.t.f. lab in maryland. to come to the conclusion. i was this time yesterday that we were talking about the severe weather threat near louisville. jonathan: today we are getting the first images of how bad the storms were. they ripped through. eight people injured. home and buildings ripped to shreds. everybody is expected to be okay. the second straight day of severe weather across the midsection of the country. all right. what would you do if you saw a pregnant woman walking into a bar? michelle: interesting development. you don't know if she is drinking and it seems like the recommend dayses on what

so alison starling is here with us. our nation biggest city is taking action here? alison: that is right. new york city is telling bars they can't deny a pregnant woman access. this policy has gone viral. different opinions from all sides. we'll have a little bit on that in a moment. but we explain the policy now. >> baby bumps and booze? mixing the two together. taboo. doctors recommend that women steer clear of alcohol for the entire nine months of pregnancy. the new york city human rights commission weighing in. new guidelines unveiled say bars can't refuse to serve pregnant women alcohol. >> they should be allowed to enter anyplace of public accommodation in new york city that a nonpregnant woman would be able to enter. reporter: this is part of a larger effort to enhance and protect right of pregnant women. particularly, in the workplace. >> the law that this guidance is based on was re

on making sure that women who are pregnant, pregnancy are able to stay in the workplace and not be forced out on unpaid leave, not forced to lose out on economic job opportunities. reporter: cases that prompted the new guideline include pregnant woman denied access to a bar that her two nonpregnant friends were allowed to enter. bouncers keeping her out because of her bump. another where a pregnant woman was denied access to a concert venue because of her pregnancy. many people up in arms about the new guidelines. speaking out on message boards. if a women has to drink while she is pregnant, she is not fit to be a parent. wrote one critic. n.y.c. has become a joke wrote another. the c.d.c. warns against drinking while pregnant. noting in guidelines earlier in year that no amount of alcohol during pregnancy no matter how small is advisable. and some 18 states consider the consumption of alcohol in pregnancy the equivalent o

alison: this makes me think about what happened here with the oman who had the breast milk and tried to go into a bar and told her, she couldn't bring it in with her. everybody has an opinion about this. pretty strong on all sides. michelle: mom who are carrying the baby feel like they ought to have their own say and others think it's not a good idea. jonathan: you recently had a baby. i wonder if you encountered anything like this? alison: i didn't. but it's one thing to go into a bar and another thing to drink in a bar. how much you would drink. half a glass of wine versus several drinks. there are many things to think about. we got mixed reviews like what we talk about here. margaret wrote in part, "as a retired bartender i am not anyone to judge anyone. as wrong as it may be unless she was already intoxicated i would serve her." anna with five children wrote this a week before each of my children born, my doctors, different ones sent me for a girls night a

curb and going on the grass. michelle: behind the wheel is a young man with the child in the van. >> the police called off the chase. the search for the mother continues. reporter: terrifying police chase caught in camera in springdale, ohio. the driver is a young mom accused of putting her child's life at risk in the minivan. the authorities are still on the hunt for the woman behind the wheel with a suspended license. the police dsh cam video captures the minivan speeding the wrong way against traffic. watch as the minivan drivers backward on the street, maneuvers around the patrol cars and goes after lawn after lawn in the neighborhood.

they confronted her in the parking lot. the woman locked herself in minivan and refused to let the child out before taking off. police stopping the pursuit. >> it was getting dangerous. we terminated the pursuit for the child's safety and the public's safety. michelle: she is still on the run but they will find her. jonathan: she never hit another vehicle. why would you do that? talk about what is happening with the traffic situation in our area. jamie: let's start with the orange line. they are all single tracking currently. orange line from cheverly to stadium-armory. blue from addison to stadium-armory. expect the delays right now up to

so the direction we are looking, there is no rain falling from the cloud. it's on the other side headed northeast away from the area. i think will work out for the nationals. we have seen the rain make the move northeast. away from district and the ballpark. we will be okay for the game tonight. this is a cool area. it's cool and darn farther south and west. warm front. much warmer. showers and the storms there. they will head away. later this evening the isolated shower. but feels gold for the first pitch getting off on time. future cast validates the assertion. the guys are mostly cloudy. that is the story moving through the day

jonathan: his name is bill dawson. original navy frogman. from world war ii. he is now 91 years old and the last one still around. a couple of weeks ago we profiled it. word got to nationals. i was there last night

honor from the baseball team. watch. he may be 91 but bill butson is smiling like a little kid -- but he is smiling like a little kid. does it mean a lot to you? >> very much. he joined the navy and went to fight world war ii as a fragman. jonathan: years later he wrote a book. before they were seals, they were frogs. on the cover is dawson. we told you his story two weeks ago. d.c. mayor's office contacted us after seeing it and they wanted to honor him at a nats game. that is why he is all smiles. >> i never had so many people thank me. shake my hand. take my picture. i guess it's good for something. jonathan: young and old came to say thanks to dawson. a thank you came from admiral john richardson, the chief

jeff: well, a 4% meal tax. in the neighborhood of $2-$3 if the meal is $50 in that range. the old pub in great falls. you walk inside the pub, you know exactly what owner mike carney thinks of this meal tax. he fought the battle in 192 and will fight it again likely here in 2016. what we are talking about here is the 4% tax that could raise $90 million a year for fairfax county. the bulk of it will likely go to schools but other services as well. quite possibly affordable housing being one of them and police and fire as well. it would all be on all prepared and food and drinks, anything from a sit-down dinner at restaurant or a bar to take-out from a fast food restaurant or grocery store. we have spoken to both sides of the issue and both feel strong beginning be the opposition. >> i do think

healthy -- perfectly healthy abigail brown arrived. >> from the moment i saw her, different love. different emotion. >> i ran track at syracuse university. i have a good idea of what she has to go through for the training. daily regimen. in the pregnancy, she averaged 40 to 45 miles per week. that is amazing. now leading up to the economic trials in eugene, she is average -- leading up to the olympic trials in eugene she is averaging 30 miles a week. >> i have started getting faster and better. scott: the journey to olympics is never easy. is it going to be more sweeter and special knowing what you have gone through? >> i hope to be able to feel that moment.

jonathan: we here at abc7 want to honor the great mentors and motivators on the region that impact the young folks. i'm talk about the local coaches. there are good ones out there. today we have a new series saluting our "coach of the week." the first recipient continues to pile up the wins while making a huge difference in players' lives. here is robert burton with the coach of the week. robert: could you imagine being on this team without having coach jenkins around? >> no. i don't think the team would be who they are without her. >> coach happy jenkins or the winning coach in all of high school girls lacrosse. with over 700 career wins. >> it blows my mind that any one person can accomplish something like that.

march. our transportation reporter brianne carter live right now at the east falls church station. with more on the specific demands. this is pretty serious. brianne: in the letter obtained by abc7, the f.t.a. telling metro tonight to take immediate action. to make urgent repairs on three different sections. one of them is right here. east falls church. stretches to the ballston station impacting riders on the orange and the silver line. as you mentioned, this is three different stretches that will be impacted as a result of this letter sent today to metro. the other two stretches from potomac avenue station to just outside stadium-armory impacting the blue, orange, silver line. from medical center to van ness on the red line. the work that the f.t.a. act asking metro to do is impact power on the track. the third rail that powers the train. drain cleaning and debris cleaning.
