as many as a dozen young people sickened after they drank this cocktail if you will, brought to school by a fellow student. the fire department had to be called. >> they were in the nurse's office. but nonetheless, the nurse's office was overwhelmed. we did call this what we say mass casualty because of the multiple patients. none of the students' injuries were life threatening. it was a sickness. brad: so when we come back at 5:00, we will tell you about this mix. it has a name. it is dangerous. a lot of information is available to young people about it online. that is when we come back at 5:00. in white oak, brad bell, abc7 news. michelle: thank you. updating a developing story now from greenville, south carolina. a gun going off in a school. we now know that a boy accidentally shot himself. the high school student was alert when paramedics arrived.

hospital. we are still trying to figure out why he had a gun in school in the first place. we'll let you know when we learn more. if you have been at the airport lately you have noticed long security lines that can wrap around and around. this is a problem across the country. these are the lines in chicago, atlanta, newark and right in our area. scott: that is not even counting the baggage issues in arizona yesterday because of screening problems that left thousands without their luggage. today homeland security jeh johnson promised to keep flying safe and improve the wait time. brianne carter is at reagan national airport. brianne: weeks away from the unofficial summer kickoff, airport lines are already growing out of control. today, new efforts to help you get to your gate quicker. this afternoon, homeland security secretary jeh johnson and the head of the t.s.a. announced they are immediately working to bring in more t.s.a. officers by june, while maximizing officers' overtime. to h

and this is the argument from local lacrosse players. some who suit up with the helmet for their games. cheryl conner shows us the first school in the nation to mandate helmets and it's in potomac. cheryl: two teams and two uniforms. can you tell what is different? head gear. one wears helmets. the potomac does not. >> sometimes we take the same hit that the guys are. >> midfielder star joined the team after the helmets were mandated in 2012. >> more light weight. not as heavy. cheryl bullis the first high school in nation to require women to wear helmets. in 2011, the school recorded four coffin cushions for girls' lacrosse. since then -- >> we are in the last game of our 2016 season. we haven't had a concussion. cheryl: the helmets are not as tough as what the guys wear. rugby's style. boys lacrosse is a contact sport. but coa

from the girls often enough. at lacrosse unlimited in alexandria they have plenty of guys' helmets on the shelves but they are getting requests from parents to make them available for the girls. >> one parent in particular came in saying her daughter couldn't play for the rest of the season because she got hit. cheryl: the travel team does not wear helmets and she feels lost without it. potomac parent says there is a down side. >> the negative might be that the girls play rougher because they feel safer wearing the helmet. cheryl: bullis lost the championship game but the team is celebrating the decision to wear helmets. in mclean, cheryl conner, abc7 news. alison: a local school that may be setting a precedent across the country. scott: they have the stats to show it. went from four concussion last year to zero so far this year. alison: right. it is hard to imagine why not? the one parent said maybe the girls would be more bold and play tougher if they are wearing them but it seems as if there

michelle: next to your children being born, wedding date is the most important date. scott: it's expensive and nerve-wracking. what happens when the venue says it is closing down before the big day? kevin lewis brought us the story. are they refunding the couples here? kevin: well, that depends on your definition of the term "refund." last night, management here at shade tree in evergreen sent out a mass e-mail telling couples they will return their deposit. but many of those couples have incurred other costs. for example, their guests have had to rebook their flights. the rental cars and hotels. while others have had to pay rebooking fees for caterers, photographers and deejas. this started last week when officials shut down shade tree in evergreen because management built a number of have you cantures without obtaining building permits. instead of communicating with the clients management went radio silent. dozens of soon to be new

happy. let's talk about why people aren't happy on the roads. that is because of -- i'm sorry, i almost said seven-mile backup. it's nine-mile backup. that is my correction there. in the single digits traveling from branch avenue to arena drive. the reason is three lanes blocked on the outer loop of the capital beltway in prince george's county with an accident. take a live look at the backup. you can see comparatively speaking the outer loop and the inner loop that is really moving well. so you get a better idea here of what a sluggish ride it is. switch gears. i want to talk virginia and i want to talk sun glare. i have a smile on my face because we haven't had sun glare in a while. 11 miles per hour heading outbound. we take a live look here as well and show what we are seeing. minor accident activity past nutley street. everyone can get by. but you get a better idea here. we have sun glare and the afternoon slowing that is typical. that's a look at traffic. back to you. michelle: thanks. amazing video from spain. a massive fire at a tire dump sent

9,000 people now evacuated from nearby homes. there is almost a hundred tons of tires. the dark cloud could be seen for miles away. for those that haven't been told to get out of the area yet, firefighters say windows should stay shut. scott: meanwhile, in oso, washington state, this is b burning out of control. it's not like the one in canada but so far close to 100 acres torched overnight alone. dramatic video there. so far the fire is nowhere near any homes or businesses but you can imagine everyone keeping a close eye on that. michelle: tough job for the firefighters out that way. meanwhile we are enjoying some temporary sunshine. doug: yeah. the front started to come through around midday. we had rain this morning. now we have sunshine over large portion. however, east of town, still rain left over. looking okay for the weekend. looking better. showers and storms tomorrow afternoon. if you have outdoor activities may i suggest early in the morning or later in the afternoon or

alison: facebook allegedly is stopping conservative topics from the trending list. today, mark zuckerberg speaking out, addressing the controversy surrounding facebook's trending topic section. saying in a post we have rigorous guidelines that do not permit the prioritization of one viewpoint over another. or the sur presentation of split -- suppression of political content. this comes after there was allegation they suppress conservative stories and forced the topics not trending to appear on the list. >> what gizmodo revealed is 20 young journalists are sorting through the trending feeds. the journalists are the ones that decide what trends and what doesn't. alison: result, facebook is coming under fire. the senate committee on commerce launching the inquiry following the claim from the former company insider. >> consumers have a right to know that

are receiving is supposedly based on some objective algorithm. opposed to somebody who is going in and manually editing it. alison: now the company ceo and founder mark zuckerberg says facebook launched an investigation. so far they have found no evidence it's true. they added if we find anything against our principles you have my commitment we will take additional steps to address it. now there is an interim and an external -- internal and external investigation underway. michelle: you can understand why people are interested in this. so many people look to facebook for their news. traditional newscast not necessarily where they get all the information. they get stories, watching videos on facebook. alison: good point. scott: yeah. with this being campaign season that is put on steroids. michelle: for real. scott: microscopic views sometimes. thank you. michelle: next for us on "abc7 news at 4:00" -- a controversial

and you may cringe but the baby does what is called safe rescue. that is ultimately what you want to do is make sure your kids are comfortable in the pool. we are joined by christie bartlett, regional director here at swim kids. you have very little swimmers in here this morning. when you saw the video, what was your initial reaction? >> interesting. we can understand how a mom wants to protect her child. so i can understand that is what she made the choice on. it's not our style of teaching. it's different from what we do at swim kids. suzanne: talk about getting the kid acclimated in a pool, young, babies if you will. take the lessons to your life. >> basically, the earlier can get babies in water, the better. they are taught to stop when they get to the edge of the pool. they come and they know crossing a street. we are in class

focus on is the child development, love, fun. the guys can do amazing things in the water. float on their back. they can fall in and come back to the wall. they can go to the bottom and get treasures. as early as 8 and 9 months old. we feel like a loving approach is the best way to go. focus on them having a great time. suzanne: this is about safety and having a life skill. >> it is about safety. our goal is they start to swim and they love the water and understand it's a place to have fun and play and not be afraid of. suzanne: thank you. it is never too early to get your children in the water. i got mine in when they were about this big. they still love swimming to this day and they are safe. good advice this morning. back to you. alison: that is the key. being co

court in dale city where luis coca-crespo died. we look at the family and the friends reeling from the tragedy. >> the friends arrived at the woodbridge home shock and in tears after learning about the murder of 14-year-old luis coca-crespo. >> i don't understand what happened. he is a good kid. jeff: liz is close with the young man's mother. >> i'm involved with the school and the family. i don't know what happened. >> last night before 9:00, the prince william county police responded to a call on this townhome on brazil circle in woodbridge. police say coca-crespo was found dead inside his room. >> the victim was killed by upper blunt force trauma. jeff: police arrested 17-year-old male for the murder at the hope. the suspect, his mother and a young child are renting the basement of the home which belongs to the family of the victim. the two families reportedly distant relatives. po
