they are asking airlines to cut the number of carry on bags which have to be screened and more overtime pay to keep officers working. >> everybody has to make plans. >> it took three hours. we hope that's enough. wouldn't it be nice if your speed camera tickets were just taken care of? for most of us, that is a fantasy, but not if you are a montgomery county police officer. i teamen on your side investigation found that giving years beat camera fines were dismissed if you were a montgomery county police officer. chris papst has this exclusive report. chris: like many drivers, lewis hates getting speed camera tickets. >> i don't entirely trust the system. chris: at a recent traffic court hearing in montgomery county, it only furthered his skepticism. >> not guilty. chris: he wa

with violations from four police officers get quickly dismissed. the officers were not in court . at the time of the tickets, they admitted they were not on call. we obtain the court audio. >> we don't have an argument they were working were on duty. >> any response? >> i would confirm they were on duty but not on calls. >> court marks the file dismissed. hearings took one minute, 48 seconds. >> is rigged. it was very obvious that the system was being circumvented. how many other times is this happening? chris: we wondered the same thing and we dug in and requested every speed camera case in montgomery county since january 2013. we checked thousands of names and found 138 police officers who got 151

every one of those tickets was either dismissed or reduced. in all, nearly $5,000 in fines were waived. what remained was paid by the officers. >> more officers pay their tickets then go to court. chris: he runs montgomery county 's traffic division. would officers get caught speeding, he issues the ticket. what happens after that is out of his control. >> fair or not, it is our system. chris: have you heard of this happening before? >> this is the first time. >> i think it sends a bad message. chris: in frederick county, maryland, but saw officers says when his officers get speeding tickets he expect them to pay in full. the same old true for other departments we contacted. montgomery county officers are the only ones who regularly fight tickets. >> we are setting the example. we are not above the law. >>

think i'm being treated unfairly. it makes me not want to trust the system. chris: do you see why this would make people mad? >> yes. chris: the voice in court is the attorney for the county police union. he will represent any officer who gets a ticket. >> officers put their lives on the line every day. there in the car, 8, 10 hours per day. we feel very strongly they should not be ticketed when they are protecting citizens. chris: is it a valid argument? >> no, and as an agency we hold our officers accountable. chris: the captain went on to say this issue is not with the police department but rather with the judges who rule in favor of the speeding officers. we reach out to all 12 judges in the district court who hear the speed camera cases, but none of them were willing to talk with us. chris papst, abc 7 news. kimber
