originating over southeast pennsylvania. had a severe rain, one reported earlier that was canceled earlier. so these are not severe. but they are seeing lightning and hail. right now the heaviest storms across calvert county. they moved across the bay. even the small hail reported. other patch of rain near baltimore. everything pushing south and west. we have ten and maybe up to three more hours of scattered showers and storms before it settles down. right now light for viewers that we have the area to watch closely. over the next few minutes. in fact, this indication may indicate the things are getting close to severe levels across portion of calvert county. we have an update in a few minutes. in the meantime we look forward to sunnier days ahead. for the short-term the gnats are in town. first pitch at 7:05. showers and storm could play a role in the early part of the game went look ahead to

next seven days in a few minutes. leon: you got it. now to a story you saw first on 7. police say a woman was raped on a red line metro train at 10:00 on tuesday morning. montgomery county reporter kevin lewis was the first to report the story and he is live in the glenmont metro station and has a look at the timeline of events here in this case. fill us in. kevin: well, this alleged rape happened on tuesday april 12. that is nearly six weeks ago. metro transit police made a quick arrest. no one notified the public. then this morning i received a tip from a source who felt it was important that riders knew that this happened. here is what prosecutors say occurred. 39-year-old john hicks of northeast washington approached a woman who was sleeping on a red line train. he then brandished a knife, dragged her to the back of the train car and forced her to take off her pants. police say hicks raped the woman while the

to station. a lot of people have asked why didn't anyone interview and stop the attack. prosecutors say hicks and the victim were in the train car alone, allowing the race to continue. this ended at the glenmont station. hicks ran off but used the smart trip card to exit so they snatched the data base with the security cameras at glenmont and quickly identified the suspect. >> a horrific thing. he accosts her and assaults her with the knife. >> people commuting in the morning should not worry about the safety. we argued that in court. the judge agreeed. kevin: prosecutors said hicks had three previous sexual assault convictions two against children. he was living northwest d.c. with his mother. he has four children of his

he is now in jail with no bond. live in silver spring, i'm kevin lewis, abc7 news. maureen: thank you. tonight virginia's governor is target of a federal investigation. that investigation led by the department of justice is putting governor terry mcauliffe's campaign under heavy scrutiny. jonathan elias is at the "live desk" with more. jonathan: the f.b.i. and the justice department investigating whether or not some campaign donation to governor mcauliffe violated campaign law according to cnn. the report says he received $120,000 donation from a chinese businessman that drew attention. under election law, foreign nationals are not allowed to donate to state elections. however cnn was told the chinese businessman has the u.s. permanent resident status. spokesperson for the governor tells cnn they have not been notified by investigators and they will cooperate fully if they are contacted. we have reached out to mcauliffe's office a

[000:04:58;00] we want justice. we want the police to know they have to do better in our community. >> in the eyes of judge barry williams, officer nero's role in the arrest and the transport of freddie gray was minimal. his actions in line with those of a reasonable police officer and those reasons he is not guilty of assault or reckless endangerment or misconduct in office. williams suggested that if there is criminal liability it's with the officers who actually arrested gray and drove the transport van. gray family attorney billy murphy saying his clients only want justice and are urging calm as the cases play out. >> the public should bear no ill will to either side about the outcome of this case. you can't win them all. all you can say is that the prosecution tried valiantly.

the defense tried valiantly. today was the defendant's day. brad: live in baltimore. to five additional trials. if all goes as scheduled now the next police officer to go on trial is expected to be caesar goodson, the driver of the police van in which freddie gray died. that is scheduled to begin next month. but at this point, much of this is up in the air. for instance, whether or not judge barry williams to stay on the cases. now tonight in baltimore, as we said, in this driving rain, all in this area and across the city remain quiet. and calm. in baltimore, brad bell, abc7 news. leon: all right. thank you, brad. now while the criminal case for officer edward nero is over his future is uncertain. moments after the verdict, the baltimore police department released a statement saying their interim investigation will continue. officer nero will remain on administrative duty until the investigation is complete. that will not be until all six cases are resolved we are told. stay with abc7 news for coverage of all of the
