student took at picture of her special needs son using the urinal, his bare buttocks exposed and posted to snapchat. the photo went viral. >> the kids today post things for a reason. we want something out of this. that is what i would love to know from the child, what was the child looking for? kevin: half confused and half mortified the victim with cerebral palsy and autism is frightened of returning to class. >> you want protect your kids and do what is right and tell them everything will be okay. social media yaw can't just go online and grab it and take it off. kevin: the photo taking teen wrote this apology letter saying he takes full responsibility, knows it was morally wrong and also asking for forgiveness. >> this child needs more than a slap on the hand. kevin: the victim's mother says words of remorse take make up for taking and then

"7 on your side" now. if you are hitting the road from weekend, a.a.a. says gas prices, this is good news, at the lowest level in 11 years. the national average today is $2.31. that is up a penny since yesterday. but still down 42 cents from a year ago. in the d.c. area, average of $2.29 for a gallon of regular unleaded. throughout the next hour we'll show you some of the cheapest places to head up north, south, east or west over the weekend.

in the case of the 38-year-old who was sentenced to 50 years behind mars in march. he was retry and found guilty of the 2001 murder of his 15-week-old son. this was to collect insurance money. the infant's mother wept as she requested the maximum punishment saying she hopes he rots in jail until the day he dies. >> he won't admit to what he did. he shows no remorse. he doesn't shed a tear. he laughs. >> 50 years behind bars really is a significant amount of time to ensure that there is the turn in the community that he is rightly punished and justice is served for this family. alison: so a 20-year child abuse sentence will run con current with the murder sentence. he will be eligible to apply for parole in 11 years. leon: coming up at "abc7 news at 5:00" -- one year later.

down the area. it's moving with a southerly wind. southwest irly wind north -- southwesterly wind north. we don't have to worry about anything other than isolated shower west of town. told you yesterday it's a big break-out day for possible tornadoes in the central and the southern plains today. all the area in yellow. part of the state from iowa and kansas and all the way south and west. all the way to the foothills and the rockies. tornado watches in effect. number of tornadoes reported recently with numerous tornado warning in effect across kansas. that is something to watch. we will watch this area. this blob, a huge area of showers and heavy thunderstorms over the atlantic ocean and:30 of the bahamas. it appears that an area of low pressure is forming up. the national hurricane center is going to send a hurricane aircraft in the system tomorrow to look for sign of tropical development. the computer model shows it will de

storm and monday could be approaching the south carolina coast. even without that the increase in the southwesterly winds are more clouds and increasing showers and beaches in our area sunday and monday. if the system develops in a full-fledged tropical storm, that will change the equation. especially for people along the carolina beaches. we will keep on top of that and report back findings. around the chesapeake bay, if you are on the bay the winds are out of the south at 5 to 10 knots. 82 degrees either side of the bay. sunshine on saturday. few clouds sunday. still nice around 79 degrees. monday is clouds increasing and showers and the storms likely. bay water in the 60's. that is nice. if you go to the pool opening this weekend that is nice saturday. probably the sunniest day of the weekend. by far is saturday and 85. 82 on sunday. maybe a late day storm. monday increasing clouds. showers and the thunderstorms are more likely. highs expected in the 70's. if you are headed to the mountains it looks okay. showers and storms there

leon: the flags are being installed there. lining the grave at arlington cemetery ahead of memorial day. today we observe a special burial for special woman. cheryl conner was there when one of the first female marines to serve in world war ii was laid to rest. tonight, 7 salutes her and her fami.

["taps" ] >> they called her momma marine. cheryl: arlington national cemetery gives momma marine her final tribute. she is now burieded with her husband, leaving behind her son and daughter, two stepchildren and grandchildren. >> she waited for marines to take women. so she didn't go into the army or the navy. cheryl: that was 1943. she spent most of her years in new carrollton waited for a sign and quit her job and signed up. >> she said they were taking women. she went in and she signed up. instead of getting on the bus and going to work. cheryl: at age 21, she was off to a military base in california to replace the men on the front lines in world war ii. her grand daughter is inspired. >> she took a train across the country to join the base in san diego. five or a seven-day trip. >> two years of active duty and six more in

bee. but not quite to the final. jeff goldberg spent the day at national harbor where the stage is set. for someone to get the last word tonight. jeff: the words are impossibly hard to smell. but the preparation is just as tough. >> 30 hours a week. jeff: since the third grade, this 8th grader from fredericksburg dreamed of reaching the finals of the scripps national spelling bee. >> you have to determination. today she got there. >> l-y-r-a-p-i-p-e. jeff: she came up short on a tough word but she still wins. >> you study for a long time and you finally get something good out of it. that is rewarding. >> i said i would have had more kids if i known they

jeff: edwin of winchester, virginia, also got tripped up but he knows the meaning of the word "perspective." >> i'm disappointed. it's good. i went far and i made my goal which was to make it to the first final. jeff: for 89 years now kids from every state and u.s. territory have come to the national bee after winning regionals. many of them seventh and eighth graders. j.j. did not have to travel far to get here. >> it's a good experience. it's fun. jeff: but he is the youngest finalist on stage. a fifth grader at bradley hills elementary school. j.j. didn't win but he has little doubt he will r-e-t-u-r-n. >> yeah, i'll be back. alison: jeff tells us 284 contestants started the week. 84 were in the finals. ten in the finals tonight. winner will be crowned at the end of the evening. >> i'll willing to bet something our kids will be

the search for the beach 2016. michelle: this is a big scene we see over the weekend. the weather should be perfect saturday and sunday for sun and swimming at the beaches closest to us. if you really want to taste of the best of the best, the closest bet is lifeguarded beach in outer banks of north carolina. it ranks fourth on the annual list by the florida professor who has made a career out of ranking beaches around the country. for the second year in a row, hanauma beach in hawaii is at the top. siesta beach in florida. kpalua bay in hawaii. coast guard beach in cape cod round out the top five. if you have a staycation plan ahead for next long weekend coming up. toze are the good destinations. you have been to the hawaii spot. leon: i vote we go to hawaiian one. >> let's all go. alison: how do you become dr. beach? that sounds like a great

four. minneapolis, and saint paul came in first and second respectively. alison: imagine walking out of your backdoor to find this. two bears just fighting in your backyard. that is what greeted an abc7 viewer in front royal this week. diane cho spoke with her today. diane: danielle says the bears trampled through the flowers, bent the back fence and threw her daughter's toy car off the back porch. this is the video she took of the encounter from inside her home only a few feet away. she says she woke up tuesday morning after she heard a commotion outside and looked out the sliding glass door to see what was going on when she found the two bears. she says they were out there for 20 or 30 minutes before she managed to scare them away. she says this isn't her family's first encounter with bears. coming up at 6:00, we will tell you more about the encounters over the years. in front royal, diane cho, c7

alison: as abc7 salutes, each memorial day the hillside of arlington national cemetery become a sea of red, white, blue with american flags placed in front of each and every headstone. as mike carter-conneen reports, soldiers soldiers fromd

have the task of distributing the flags. tradition that started in 1948. mike: more than 230,000 marble headstone line the landscape of arlington national cemetery. across 624 acres a sight to see. >> to see everyone before you that has gone, fought and died, it makes you real proud. mike: in preparation for memorial day weekend, the thousand soldiers went in different directions marching in unison. >> they have 300 to 400 flags. mike: this is an annual tradition but experienced by many of the young soldiers for the first time. a number of them newly enlisted. >> honorable day. almost teary eyed. >> it's hard work. yet they call it a blessing. >> when you go to each one individually, look at each name. the medals they earned, the wars they taught in. >> give you a perspective of service and sacrifice given by each one of the brave men and women. mike: over
