this morning on "world news now," gunfire on the campus of ucla. >> students scramble for cover, all buildings locked down with some barricading themselves in. what we're learning this morning about the deadly incident that spurred panic eight major university. and we have newly released 911 calls as the mother of the boy who slipped into a gorilla exhibit begs for help from an emergency dispatcher. hear the calls and the latest in the investigation. a drunk driving suspect finds a clever way to avoid or at least try to avoid getting arrested. don't actually blow into the breathalyzer. just do everything you can to make it look like you are. the police seemingly impressed by his unusual performance. and headed for history. the epic nba finals rematch is set to tip off tonight. step curry and the

ucla. the victim a mechanical engineering professor who colleagues describe as a lively loveable guy. >> his name is william klug. married father of two, a little league coach and apparently an avid surfer. police have not released the name of the shooter, the man who unleashed two hours of terror across the campus. here's kayna whitworth. >> it sent students running for cover. >> around 10:00 this morning, a report of a shooting occurred here on the ucla campus. >> reporter: abc news learning the victim in this parent murder/suicide was william klug, a professor of engineering. shots ringing out just after 10:00 a.m. >> conducting a search for the active shooter. >> reporter: hundreds of officers swarm the area. fears of a possible gunman on campus. thousands of students told to shelter in place. dozens trapped inside that building. >> i heard somebody yell, everybody run, escape, run.

commotion in the crowd. people said they saw an assault rifle. >> some barricading themselves inside, propping tables against doors, tying printer cords to door handles, using belts, anything they could find to stay safe. >> we bolted out of there and ran out to the seventh flash of one of the buildings and hid in the bathroom for like an hour and a half. >> major incident in west l.a. division. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. teams seen inside on surveillance cameras going door to door. officers finding two male victims with gunshot wounds. a gun and a note found nearby. >> murder/suicide. there's been no activity. >> after two hours of chaos, each student is cleared one by one, told to drop their knees with their hands up. a final search by police. >> officers telling me the next step in the investigation is to figure out who the shooter is. they will be searching his apartment and social media accounts. the engineerin

forward, suggesting the judge's spanish heritage even though he was born in indiana would affect his ability to judge the case. >> so what happens is the judge who happens to be we believe mexican which is great. >> the trump campaign published a video with three who praised the program. one says she was never told to sign anything and was offered a refund. kendis and diane, back to you. >> stephanie, thank you. federal prosecutors have decided not to the file civil rights charges in a minneapolis police shooting that sparked protests across the city. jamar clark was killed in a scuffle with two police officers back in philosophy. witnesses said he was handcuffs at the time. physical evidence showed he was not handcuffs. civil rights groups are demanding more action. >> it's unacceptable to see the laws and policies and procedures be used to justify the killing of an unarmed

person. >> the fact is, jamar clark dictated the circumstances that night and the officer's actions were necessary to prevent injury or death to themselves or others. >> the decision comes after the county attorney also declined to file charges saying clark was reaching for an officer's gun. the police department is also conducting an interm investigation and clark's family has suggested it might file a civil lawsuit. meanwhile, the family of a south florida man killed by police is expressing realeaf and learning the officer will face charges. cory jones was waiting for a two truck when the officer eventually caught and shot him. raja is expected to make his first court appearance this morning. stunning numbers from the city of chicago. month of may saw nearly a 40% increase in the murder rate. it's not just chicago. other major cities are also seeing a jump in violent crimes. here is adrian bankert. >> reporter: in chicago

month of may continuing into june. a boy shot down the street from a high school. that murder following a new report of a spike in murders in the windy city. 66 killed and 318 shootings in may alone. >> it's more nan just a chicago police problem. this is a chicago problem. we need the communities, business people, clergy, elected officials, everybody has an interest. >> reporter: among the youngest victims, 15-year-old ver ron can lopez shot while riding with presumed gang members police say the deadply spree fueled by repeat offenders with illegal guns sparking an intense debate on gun control if a city with some of the strictest gun laws. >> having the strictest gun laws in the world have little effect on people who are committing these types of violent acts. >> reporter: across the u.s., a big increase in homicides. in las vegas, murder is up 81%. newark, new jersey, of 0%. in arlingto

>> reporter: for the first time, we are hearing an the frantic calls to 911 in the moments after that boy fell into the gorilla exhibit. >> oh, god. oh, god. it's got his pants, he's taking the baby -- >> ma'am, listen to me. >> he's taking the baby into the cave. oh, my god. >> reporter: the 3-year-old's mother calling in as he was being dragged. rilla.son fell in with the there's a male gorilla standing over him. i need someone to contact the zoo, please. >> reporter: his mother trying to comfort him. while talking to the operator. >> be calm, be calm. he's dragging my son. i can't watch this. >> reporter: until the zoo's emergency response team made the decision to shoot and kill the 17-year-old endangered silverback to save the boy. >> it's a terrible thing for the gorilla, no doubt about it. i can understand why people don't understand why the gorilla wasn't saved. >> reporter: in a statement the child's mother says her son is doing well. she thanked the zoo and asked any well-wishers to donate money directly to the zoo in the gorilla's name. cincinnati police investigating the circumstances that led to the fall, while in a separate, federal investigation, standard when incidents like this occur, the usda is reviewing safety
