a good thursday morning to you all. classes at ucla are set to resume this morning except for the engineering department which is shut down for the rest of the week. >> that's the location where a gunman shot and killed a professor then took his own life. the victim has been identified as william klug. he taught mechanical engineering and was a married father of two. the 39-year-old is being remembered as a kind, gentle man who seemed to have no preliminaries with anyone. before surfacing this morning saying the shooter was a student despondent about his grades. here's abc's kayna whitworth. >> reporter: new details in a deadly shooting that paralyzed ucla's campus and sent students running for cover. >> around 10:00 this morning a report of a shooting occurred here on the ucla campus. >> reporter: abc news learning the victim in this apparent murder/suicide was william klug, a professor of engineering. hundreds

area. fears of a possible gunman on campus. thousands of students told to shelter in place. dozens trapped inside that building. >> i heard some gunshots in the building. i did hear some shots then i heard somebody yell, everybody run, escape, run. there's a -- then i heard commotion and crowd and people said they saw an assault rifle. >> everyone, run, clear the area. >> reporter: some barricading themselves inside propping tables against tdoors. using belts. anything they could find to stay safe. >> we bolted out there to the seventh floor of one of the buildings and hid in the bathroom for an hour and a half. >> we tried to remain as calm and quiet as possible. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. teams seen inside on surveillance cameras going door to door. >> so horrific and to have it happen here is just, it's crazy. >> reporter: after two hours of chaos, each student is cleared. one by one. told to drop to their knees with their hands up. a

kayna whitworth, abc news, los angeles. >> our thanks to kayna there. we move on to stake in california where the big primary is just five days away and all three candidates are reaching out to voters across that state. hillary clinton is saving her sharpest attacks for donald trump as he faces growing scrutiny over his defunct school. it's "your voice, your vote." we get the latest from abc's karen travers live in washington. good morning, karen. >> reporter: hey, good morning, diane and kendis. the sign that her team may be worried, hillary clinton cut short her campaigning in new jersey and headed west. today she's kick off five days of campaigning in california ahead of that critical primary. now, bernie sanders is certainly not going anywhere and he is making this a race but hillary clinton saving her toughest attacks for donald trump. it's getting tight in the golden state. >> tuesday we are going to win the primary here in california. >> reporter: a new poll showing a dead heat between hillary clinton and bernie sanders. but back on the campaign trail in new

her toughest attack yet on donald trump calling him a fraud. >> he is trying to scam america, the way he scammed all those people at trump u. >> reporter: trump university, the latest controversy for the presumptive republican nominee. new documents revealing students paid up to $35,000 and all they got for that an unaccredited real estate course involving a series of retreats, mentorship session and online curriculum and access to a list of foreclosed properties. oh, and paper certificates like these. trump insists his school delivered and on the trail, he didn't let up on clinton. >> she has no natural talent to be president. this is not a president. >> reporter: but now clinton has another high-profile attack dog in her corner. a fired up president obama shaking off the campaign trail cobwebs tearing into trump's proposals including his tax plan.

look at these scenes here. many of the cows you're seeing were able to get to higher ground but some were lost and some good news about this group of horses that crowded around a house to stay safe. they've been rounded up and brought to safety. but then there's this, unfortunately, the radar doesn't provide much relief. some parts of the houston area could get up to 10 inches of rain through tomorrow. areas around austin and dallas are also getting more rain. flood watches and warnings are up for more than 3/4 of the state. now to a developing story from the san francisco bay area. two police officers have been shot after a traffic stop gone bad. overnight the suspect was barry k5ided inside his home in fremont. one of the officers in critical condition, the other is stable. the gorilla named harambe was shot and killed moments after -- let's move on to the dramatic 911 call from the mother of that young boy who fell into the gorilla pit.

four people are in critical condition with horrible burns after this explosion in houston. emergency responders believe a gas leak is likely to blame. the victims also suffered internal injuries from breathing in hot smoke. breaking overnight a charter boat taking elementary schools on a field tape sank off chesapeake bay and the coast guard said it dispatched crews immediately after receiving a distress call but a good samaritan arrived first loading everyone onto his boat and bringing them to shore. some were treated for minor injuries. a few hospitalized but everyone on board was wearing a life jacket. some new concerns about air bag inflaters from takata. four automakers are still selling them in new vehicles that is despite the devices being potentially defective. those automakers are fiat, mitsubishi, toyota and volkswagen. takata is recalling 69 million

if you're flying today. for more fallout from that growing sex scandal at baylor university in texas. >> ken starr stepping down as chancellor but will continue to teach classes. he said he didn't know about the allegations involving the football program until media reports first surfaced last year but starr accepts responsibility saying, quote, the captain goes down with the ship. a former florida police officer is due in court today for killing a man, corey jones was waiting for a tow truck after his suv broke down when officer newman raj ra shot him. raja since been fired from the police department. prosecutors say he never identified himself as a cop before opening fire on jones. and now to a brutal attack caught on camera on a bus in washington state. a man kicked an 80-year-old woman in the face with all his might and then started choking

driver when she tried to intervene all the passengers managed to get off the bus when the man ordered the driver to close the doors, she shut off the battery and ran out trapping him inside. it's unclear what prompted that violence. the governor of florida is warning his state will experience disaster from the zika virus unless there's federal help. it's expected to hit the u.s. in the coming weeks. in a hospital in new jersey they have released this photo of a baby born with severe birth defects after her mother was infected with zika in honduras. the baby girl is being evaluated by teams of specialist. >> we continue to evaluate the extent of the effects of the virus on her as well as her ability to do common childhood things. >> doctors say the mother's hanging in there but, of course, is devastated by her child's medical issues. >>ing 0, sohus and wife in connecticut has a new piece of family history to cherish. a postcard showing the kennedy compound on cape cod. that card was mailed by a late aunt in june of

495 construction -- 95 construction breaking overnight. several men end up in the hospital following a triple stabbing in southeast. this was the scene just after 11 p.m. at martin luther king jr. avenue and lebaum street. police tell abc-7 that the victims, all men, were taken to the hospital conscious and breathing.. but there is no word on their current condition. no arrests have been made. an update on a story we've followed for weeks. new charges filed after a fiery crash at a local diner. police say a former employee intentionally rammed his s-u-v

diner last month- then set his hummer on fire. a 74-year-old man who was a customer was killed. the driver, samuel abutoh is now out of the hospital- and charged with second degree murder and multiple charges of arson. police say abutoh was a cook at the diner. a virginia teacher is in hot water this morning-- accused of giving drugs to a middle school student at his home. police say 32 year old zachary van dyke smoked marijuana with the 13 year old at his home. the teacher is also accused of selling drugs to the boy. van dyke coached freshman basketball at washington-lee high school and was a teaching assistant at gunston middle school. police now trying to figure out if this is the first time van dyke has done this. van dyke is now suspended, pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. he's charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and distribution of marijuana. a complex, million-dollar

over handbags! police say of arlington bought expensive purses, and then took a counterfeit version back to the store for a refund. then- they say she'd sell the real one online! according to court documents, investigators say she did this for years- traveling to at least 12 different states to make returns at t-j maxx stores. authorities executed a search warrant at her home in arlington but noticed it didn't have much furniture and was "littered with purses". investigators say they found nearly 600 handbags at her home--- many of them counterfeit. it's xx and we're just getting started.
