aim at the east coast right now, already spawning this tornado in indiana and leaving destruction in its path in iowa. a shed ripped to pieces, scattered across this field. in western pennsylvania, high water trapping people inside their homes this weekend. their only way out on a rescue boat. ? in the south, mother nature lighting up the georgia sky. strong winds pulling up trees and snapping them in half. and in flood-plagued texas tonight, army officials now identifying eight of the nine soldiers killed when flood waters swept their tactical vehicle off the road. among the dead, a staff sergeant serving four tours in iraq and afghanistan, a west point graduate and 20-year-old private rae'laurin gates. >> she was just such a beautiful, beautiful young lady and it just grieves me to my heart to know this has happened. >> reporter: texas finally getting a much-needed break from the rain, but nobe

inches came pouring down in just three hours' time in houston. homeowners still not able to go home, but trying to get a glimpse of what's left. >> i want to see if there's something i can salvage and i can't go inside the house. >> reporter: these storms pushing east towards major cities. a severe thunderstorm watch in effect from south carolina to new york. some of the weather weather, expected here in pennsylvania. tom? >> thank you. rob marciano joins us. and the storm, right over philly and new york? >> yes, winds over 60 miles an hour. the pink, the severe thunderstorm watch. severe weather, hail, tornado, not out of the question. by 7:00 a.m., it's pretty much clear in the east. but the

storms still. colin should make landfall tomorrow. but to the east, that's where the impact will be. the third named storm so far this year, the earleiest on record. >> thanks. and heat fueling a wildfire near los angeles, as thousands fled their homes. tonight, some of the evacuation orders have been lifted, but there are still fires. here's lauren lyster. >> reporter: tonight, it is all hands on deck in these california hills after fast-moving flames forced residents out of their homes in the middle of the night. 3,700 evacuated, 500 acres charred so far and the fire only 75% contained. helicopters have been dropping water on the flames all day, but officials saying it's going to

take boots on the ground with shovels and hoses to make sure this fire's out. 400 firefighters tackling the blaze on foot. fending off flames. witnesses say a truck slammed into this power pole, knocking it down, a transformer exploding, sparking the fire. some residents still being kept from their homes. do you know when you get to go back home? >> no. >> reporter: how does that make you feel? >> uncomfortable. >> reporter: others, like the man who shot this video, taking a sigh of relief tonight. the town's famous residents also rattled by the flames. >> we were born and raised in calabasas. there's the fire next to my house. >> reporter: take a look. you can see where the fire is contained. the contrast of ash and brush. not helping fire crews, though, the heat and five year drought in california turning this terrain into a tinderbox.

>> thank you. we now turn to muhammad ali. americans remembering him. and his body has come home to louisville, kentucky, where the funeral will take place later this week. here's ryan smith. >> reporter: tonight, a memorial mirrors the sorrow. words of love and loss, mourners of all generations coming to salute their hero. ali's brother becoming emotional. thursday's private service for immediate family followed by a massive public tribute on friday. a funeral procession will go down muhammad ali boulevard, then an interfaith memorial service. former president bill clinton and billy crystal to deliver eulogies. ali, especially fond of crystal's impersonations, this

party. >> i'm still so fast i can turn out the lights and get into bed before the room gets dark. >> reporter: fans and friends tonight, packing his childhood home, now a museum, catching a glimpse of his humble beginnings. what did he mean not only to louisville but african-american and black folks all over the world? >> to be honest with you, man, he means everything. he means hope, he means yes i can, he means oh wow, this is true. >> reporter: the outpouring reaches far beyond his hometown. even george foreman, who lost to ali in the famed "rumble in the jungle," no longer a fierce rival. >> he was a lovely guy, and i wanted to be his friend. what a phenomenon. you had to see him. even if you pulled against him, you wanted to be a part of it. he had it all. >> reporter: tonight, an interfaith service will be held at a local mosque in what will be a week long farewell to the champ. tom?

muhammad ali's longest bout was with parkinson's disease. tonight, so many asking, is there a connection between a career in the boxing ring and his illness. here's jim avila. >> reporter: this is the last video of muhammad ali in public at a charity event in april. 30 years of parkinson's, a disease that damages the brain's ability to communicate with the body, inflicting tremendous havoc on the champ and causing his public to wonder if there is a link between the hits he absorbed in the ring and the disease that led to his death. >> i think it's quite clear that beatings in the ring will make your brain quite damaged in terms of the inflammation, and then over time, it's quite likely you get a disease like parkinson's.

>> reporter: when i first met ali in the mid-1980s in chicago, he was in his 40s and just been diagnosed. just his right arm trembled. three decades later, he couldn't walk or talk. when ali was young, he was almost unhittable, but his later fights were brutal. frazier nearly killed him. norton broke his jaw with one punch, foreman pounded him in the famous rumble in the jungle. and today he marvels at ali's determination to take a punch and perhaps unwisely get up for more. >> you could hit him where you hit everyone else, but he was not willing to fall, not willing to be counted out. >> reporter: a brain autopsy would determine if he suffered other brain damage. but it's clear he already suffered from parkinson's disease. tom? an american journalist has been

covering it for national public radio. here's alex more kward. >> reporter: the devastating news came in tonight. the npr team had been travelling through afghanistan's dangerous southern helmand province. the car carrying award-winning photographer david gilkey was hit by an rpg. he was killed. npr correspondent tom bowman, who covers the pentagon, was in another car. tonight, we are told he is safe and unharmed. the pair was back in afghanistan, where they'd been many times to cover america's longest war. this attack, a dark reminder of the ever-present dangers faced by not just those fighting, but reporting as well. gilkey had covered major stories around the world, from gaza to the philippines to haiti. >> i mean, it's hard, but you can't get caught up in it and become part of it. you still need to maintain your state of mind that you are helping tell this story. >> reporter: in 2011, the white
