officer caesar goodson opted for a judge to preside over his case instead after a jury. he was driving as he sustained a lethal spinal injury and now faces charges of second degree murder and manslaughter among others and he is the second officer now to select a bench trial. the last known living search dog from september 11th has passed away. 16-year-old brittany was euthanized near houston monday among the 300 search dogs at the world trade center site. the golden retriever and her handler spent ten days there. brittany was retired from active service. some seven years ago. now recently she was reading assistance dog for elementary school students. >> hard working dog. still ahead our first look at o.j. simpson in years. >> plus, dangerous waters for the second time in as many day, a popular beach closed after several shark sightings. and look at this sneaky cat. it's a large panther creeping up on a zoo

quite a square for passengers on an american airlines jet on board waiting at the gate in seattle heading to dallas when smoke started billowing outside the window. a starter machine caught fire. that's an external device hooked up to the plane to help start the engines. the plane was not damaged but passengers were placed on other flights. south of there a stretch of coastline in southern california is off-limits after a group of sharks were spotted. the sighting of three 12-foot sharks forced the latest closure of sunset beach in orange county. it was also closed sunday when sharks were spotted.

was sentenced to six months in prison for sexually attacking an unconscious woman but the d.a. asked for six years. krit turkeys launched a recall effort against the judge. two letters are also sparking even more outcry. one was an emotional 12-page statement from the victim. the other came from turner's dad who said his son's punishment is a steep price for, quote, 20 minutes of action. in nevada the department of corrections released a new mug shot of o.j. simpson. the 68-year-old has not been seen in a mug shot since 2013. a heavier and grayer simpson smiles for the camera. the former nfl star is serving 33 years in prison for armed robbery. clearly a different look from his first mug shot. this one in 1994 when he was charged in the murders of nicole brown and ron goldman. simson, of course was acquitted. a professional fighter who started as a viral sensation has died. kimbo

in annapolis-- police are trying to figure out what lead to the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old girl. officer say they found kymici brown fatally shot inside a home in the 13-hundred block of tyler avenue. 19-year-old ryan surgeon will appear in court later today for a bail hearing. he is charged with first degree murder. a scary chain of events at a rockville restaurant. a bartender, run over by a car -- over a 33-dollar tab! police say tracy carrillo and her friends tried to ditch their check at miller's ale house. a female
