c.com captions paid for by cbs television distribution announcer: now "abc7 news at 4:00". on your side. jonathan: right now at 4:00, graduation day at clarksburg high school in machine machine county has take -- in montgomery county has take an somber turn. alison: three high school students die on the eve of the school's graduation. michelle: the students had one more year left. the time, this time next year, they would have been the ones walking just like their older classmates. jonathan: so sad. we have team coverage this afternoon for you. maryland bureau chief brad bell at the crash scene. montgomery county reporter kevin lewis outside the school. alison: we begin along a winding road where kingstead road and burnt hill road meet. that's where brad bell is standing now. brad? brad: well, this is where that collision happened. take a look at the trees over

this is what the pickup truck carrying the three teens slammed into. you can see the flowers, the football balloons have been placed there. this orange vest i'm wearing is company policy near a roadway. we often feel awkward wearing it. here, it's a necessity. this curve is treacherous. cars come flying down this road. police are telling us this is one of the contributing factors. grief-stricken high school students gather at the crash scene. they look at the old trees scarred by the high-speed impact and remember the young faces. jacob dennis, patrick shifflett and cary greene. all juniors at clarksburg high, all killed in the late-night collision. >> these guys were great men. they were leaders on the team on and off the field. they were role models. you could look up to them when you needed something on or off the field. brad: the three friends were in jacob dennis' pride and joy pickup truck. they had been to a party to

high graduation. dennis apparently losing control as his 1989 truck entered a tight curve on burnt hill road, skidding sideways into the woodline. police do not believe alcohol was a factor. >> indications are speed could be a factor but i think more inexperience. it was a young teenager drive on a country road late at night. we know from past experiences that that is when tragedies occur. brad: captain of the montgomery county police you were hearing from there know the pain collisions like this can cause. he lost his own son in 2008 in an eerily similar crash. when we come back at 5:00, more from him, including some advice to parents that he thinks can save lives. in clarksburg, brad bell, abc7 news. alison: all right, brad. thank you. so at clarksburg high's graduation, a moment of silence today held for jacob dennis, patrick shifflett

cary greene. montgomery county reporter kevin lewis continues our team coverage from clarksburg. kevin, such a sad beginning to what should have been a celebration. kevin: yeah. administrators really had to walk a fine line today. on one hand they wanted to honor the lives of the three teenagers but on the other hand they wanted to make sure the commencement ceremonies were kept upbeat and positive. at 10:00, this morning, 400 clarksburg high school seniors filed the athletic complex at mount st. mary's university. the principal made remarks about jacob dennis, patrick shifflett and cary greene and then caused for a moment of silence. dennis and shifflett were on the clarksburg varsity football team. shifflett was a defensive end and an -- a guard. greene played

attending damascus high school in freshman and sophomore years and he transferred to clarksburg this year. the principal knew all three young men well. >> i was the principal of rocky hill middle school when they were in middle school so i have known them since they were 11 years old. it's very difficult. we as a community band together. we come together at times like this. we take care of each other. kevin: clarksburg high school did not have class because of graduation. the students will return tomorrow. the grief counselors will be on hand. in the last hour we have learned that a candlelight vigil will take place tonight at 7:30. at difference-maker church in damascus. it is open to the public. we are live in clarksburg, i'm kevin lewis, abc7 news. jonathan: thank you. we did some checking. memorial day was the start

deadliest days of the year. more than 1,000 people are killed over that stretch in crashes involving teenage drivers. that is an average over five years. according to the data compiled by the national traffic highway safety administration, more than half of those killed were teens.

longer in the area? >> that is right. this happened over my shoulder next to the tree on the sidewalk here on montgomery street. after talking with witnesses police say they believe the suspect left this area. there is no immediate threat to the community they say. in the past hour crime scene tape came down here on this block. traffic moving through. investigators say it happened around 12:30 this afternoon. witnesses tell me they heard six gunshots in rapid succession. they looked outside and saw the victim's body here. there was no noise, no shouting or altercation before they heard the gunshot sound. police responded to several 911 calls. found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds. he was transported to a nearby hospital. pronounced dead an hour later around 1:30 p.m. there is no victim i.d. at this point yet. they are still trying to notify family members but say he is in his late 20's. >> we understand any acts of violence in a community are going to cause some concerns and so we will be in the community.

community. we will ensure that we continue to be here to let the community know we will do whatever it takes to not only bring this person to justice who committed this act but to ensure they feel safe in the community. mike: we are still seeking a suspect description in the homicide investigation. the motive is unclear. coming up at 5:00 on abc7, reaction from neighbors who say they are fed up with the late-night activity, public drinking and in some cases violence on this block. reporting live in old town alexandria, mike carter-conneen, abc7 news. alison: thank you. meanwhile, a bethesda chevy chase high school teacher is in police custody accused of taking pictures of girls. todd scriber according to police took pictures of at least three teenage girls in the classroom. one student telling police when she went to ask a question in the test he had his phone under her skirt. he was placed on leave in to

"7 on your side" fighting back against crime. to see what is happening in your neighborhood log on to wjla.com. click on the "on your side" tab and check out the spot crime map. each report posted there goes right down to the block. jonathan: break news coming in the newsroom from tel aviv in israel. a deadly shooting has taken place. leon harris is at the "live desk" there. san all-all manhunt going on? what happened? leon: the hunt for whoever else may be involved. the word is four people were killed in a shooting in central tel aviv in a market there, that is widely known of the largest shopping center in the area in tel aviv. we hear this is described by the police as being aimed specifically against israelis. at least five are wounded. two are in serious or severe conditions in hospitals right now. police are telling us that at least two terrorists have b

caught or neutralized, which means they were killed or detained. no word on the type of the number of the weapons used. there is no discussion about whether or not automatic weapons were used. the two attackers are described being cousins from the hebron area and they were known to israeli authorities. they have been described in one case that at least one of the attackers was disguised as ultra orthodox jew. police are searching the area to make sure there are no other attackers. there are concerns about how much coordination there may have been involved in these two or any other groups. at this point no other group claimed responsibility. we will keep an eye on the story and let it know what we learn here. back to you. jonathan: thanks. five bicyclists dead. all of them nowed down by a truck drive. this mapped in michigan yesterday everything. the man behind the wheel has been taken in custody. lauren springer from the sister station wwmt is in cooper township, michig

happened? do we have a motive? reporter: that is the question of the hour. a question that police can't answer for us just yet. they do not know exactly what caused this to happen. what they can tell us is a 50-year-old man was arrested. not far from the scene last night. this, of course, after he ran over nine people out on a bike ride killing five. of course, leaving the scene. now calls of the pickup truck, the suspect was driving started coming in about a driver driving erratically. this started early yesterday evening. three different police agencies out looking for the truck before this hit-and-run. this is just another round of heartbreak for the kalamazoo community. the second mass casualty we have seen here in just months. all of this following a shooting spree in february, killing six and wounding two others. >> they are different in lots

the emotional trauma it is causing to people in the community. and to the community. you don't ever expect it to happen. i never expected there to be another one of those late night, overnight five people dead, six people dead events. certainly not in the span of four months. reporter: it's very tough time for the west michigan community. we have just within the last ten minutes learned the names of the five victims that were killed. three women, two men ranging from their early 40's to the late 70's. all member of the change gang bike club in the kalamazoo area. the fourth survivor in two hospitals and three in serious and one in fair condition. the suspect is expected to be charged tomorrow. facing once again a long list of charges from murder to fleeing the scene of an accident cain

jonathan: melvin pate died in 2012 after a shooting. recently, though, he was able to testify in a case against his suspected murderer. sam ford explains how pate was able to secure a conviction identifying the gunman despite the fact he was dead. >> i want to show you a picture. if you see the person, blink one hard for yes. okay? sam: this is video from five years ago after melvin pate had been shot, paralyzed and unable to speak. pate in an earlier photo died two years later before the case could get to court. today, after many appeals over the video, five and a half years later -- >> we

prince george's county jury yesterday returned a verdict of guilty. sam: -- the jurors found jermaine hailes guilty of first-degree murder. court papers say he shot and robbed pate at the capital heights building in what was to be the sale of half a pound of marijuana. jurors saw him close his eyes tight when the picture was shown to him. >> is this the person that shot you? this is the person that shot you? yes? sam: the prosecutor noted it's not often they meet the victim before he dies. >> we went to see him in the hospital once we were assigned to this five and a half years ago. >> this really does highlight how special the prosecutors in this case are, how hard they worked. this is a very satisfying verdict. not just for this family. this is a very satisfying verdict for this office. sam: according to the prosecutors this is only the fourth time in u.s. history that blinking has been used as a dying declaration.

maryland. jermaine hailes, the man convicted faces life plus 20 years. reporting from prince george's county, maryland, i'm sam ford, abc7 news. michelle: let's talk tennis. tennis star maria sharapova is planning to appeal a two-year ban that has been handed down this morning. the international tennis federation instituted the ban after the russian star failed a drug test back in january. that is when she tested positive for meldonium at the australian open. sharapova has been taking the medicine since 2006. but the substance was banned this year. jonathan: there is another sports star that will be missing missing in action who is a shame because he is fun to watch play. he is pulling out for health reasons. tiger woods says he will not tee it up in the u.s. open or the quicken loans national. the former world number one golfer says he is getting better but he is still not full

back surgeries. although he won't play, tiger does say he will be in town to host quicken loans national. he will be here. alison: that helps. just knowing he is in town helps the local businesses. jonathan: absolutely. people love tiger woods. this is the third weekday of the metro safetrack. i don't know about you. i saw a lot of cars on the road. michelle: a lot of folks are counting the days. some people decided to take measures into their own hands by grabbing handlebars. yammer good weather for it today. jay korff show us more people are hopping on bicycles for the commute. jay: we are in rosslyn, virginia, right next to the trail. >> two-wheel commuters are storming the d.c. area streets and it may be due to the mess on metro rails. safetrack, the year-long minutes plan to mend the transit system is causing considerable delays for the morning and the evening riders. maybe that is why you are seeing more of these riders.

jay: rob started commuting via bike a year ago. he is glad he did. >> i just love it. i love the exercise. i love the time on a bike instead of in a car. jay: more crowded trains typically push the rail riders to drive more, clogging the area roadways. >> to avoid the traffic i will ride more this week than i would normally. jay: metro's first monday for safetrack proved a bonanza for bicyclist advocates. the director of bike arlington points to this bike-o-meter near key bridge as proof. monday it recorded 2,325 bike trips. double the normal monday for may. the hope is the bike commuters will stay on two wheels long after safetrack is over. >> it's the most dependable way to get to work. jay: jay korff, abc7

michelle: it is time to recognize one of the great teachers and the mentors from our area. trey mines is the boys basketball coach at h.d. woodson in the district. coach mines leads his players on the court and looks out for them off of it. here is robert burton with our coach of the week. robert: where do you think if coach mines wasn't in your life and trying to mold and shape you? >> only god knows. robert: that was boyd's response when asked about this guy, his basketball coach trey mines. mines isn't just a coach. he is the definition of a big brother to make sure the players stay out of trouble, not just through the school year but during the summer as the a.a.u. program. >> i'm more involved than some would be. for comfort.

michelle: have you seen this? a man attempting to kidnap a girl. the camera rolling the entire time. alison: police describe it as one of the worst things they have seen play out. thankfully the teenage girl's mother steps

she win asterfying tug-of-war. we go inside the dollar general store. reporter: surveillance video capture a man dragging a girl through a store in an attempted kidnapping the teen's mother holding on for dear life. >> he searched out his victim. he stretched and he went after that child. reporter: we are learning more about craig, the man seen shopping in the video and suddenly pouncing on the 13-year-old dragging her to the exit. the teen's mother grabbed the daughter's other arm refusing to let go. >> why mom was on him. he was getting his butt kicked by mom. reporter: the would-be kidnapper is not listed on a sex offender list but has a criminal history including charges of trespassing and aggravated battery on a police officer. he is now facing kidnapping and child abuse charges. he tried to get away but was

in the parking lot. >> he fought but when he realized i had the upper edge he complied. >> deputy jonathan bennan hailed a hero and girl's mother mended for her quick response -- mended -- commended for her quick response. >> it's your child. you do what you have to do. >> authorities tell us neither the mother nor the daughter was harmed in the incident. in new york, abc news. alison: taking one more look at the video. you see the man pull the 13-year-old girl away from her mother there. you hear about a suspect running when there is a commotion. he certainly does not. the mother is able to hold on until the off-duty officer steps in to help. the timing of having the off-duty officer there was incredible. the mom was not letting go. michelle: so often, like you

last night. when deputies arrived they were shot at by 18-year-old joshua sumter. one of the deputies was hit four times including a shot to his chest. he is expected to survive. sumter was arrested, charged with attempted capital murder. alison: another case of domestic violence and two people are dead at the 1300 block of gray street. police shooting and killing the man who opened fire after his estranged wife tried to run away. cheryl conner explains what happened. cheryl: the woman trying to run away from her estrangedded husband came out of this home and ran a few doors down. that is where two people were shot and killed. it all happened around 9:00 tuesday night on gray street in culpeper county. 49-year-old willis walker followed the woman to his home

sheriff scott jenkins says walker shot and killed a 74-year-old man. he then "violently assaulted" his estranged wife to a point he thought she was dead. another woman in the house called 911. when deputies arrived the sheriff says walker would not drop his gun while approaching them. so a sergeant shot and killed him. the neighbors remember the man killed was the best on the block. >> he was the best in neighborhood. he took care of everybody. it's just crazy it happened here. >> the 51-year-old estranged wife is expected to survive. the other woman inside the house was not hurt. no deputies were injured. coming up at 5:00, you will hear more about the tense moments. cheryl conner, abc7 news. michelle: for some the first reaction when you see an abandoned baby de

rescue the animal. the wildlife group in virginia has a message for those people. leave the fawns alone. fawn rescues have been an issue in the roanoke area. the wildlife center there says it gets about a call an hour from people worried about fawns. pete may have good intention -- people may have good intentions but when they try to rescue the baby deer they are harming them. >> this time of year, mom will leave them because they are too young to keep one her. so she will forage throughout the day and come back to feed them periodically. michelle: it is best to call before assuming an animal is in trouble. alison: now to hutchinson, kansas. this is quite a story. surprise delivery. last thursday, gina hilltop gave birth to a baby boy weighing 14.4 pounds. jonathan: linebacker! alison: may be one day. they were expecting a big baby consider
