here, you can look at another area here of north capital where there are police lights down there. between the two scenes according to the chief, a man came out with a gun. he was obviously looking for somebody to shoot. well, at this point the man walks up the street here to where this liquor store is, big ben liquor store and pulls out a gun and he has targeted somebody and he is shooting that person. in fact, he shot that person multiple times. there were other people here that were shot in the leg. a total of at least four people according to the chief, at least four people were shot in the leg here. i heard from some of the witnesses that people were running and screaming, coming this way. now in addition to the people that witnesses might have heard, also the police officer on a bicycle in this area heard the shot and attempted to come to the scene. he was struck by a car. the chief told us about that. chief lanier: so the sound of gu

a block away. he comes to the scene and he is struck by a car. the car did stay on the scene. the officer is in good condition. he has been transported. right now his injuries are not serious. sam: now the chief is saying the one person who was shot multiple times is in serious condition. the other people were shot in the legs. they are not in serious condition. they are in good condition. as is the police officer. there is a lookout now for a black male who is wearing blue jeans and a hooded shirt, according to the chief. again, this man came out a side street. walked down here to new york avenue and proceeded to start shooting somebody. a police officer a block away was trying to respond. he was hit by a car. other people here were struck by bullets as they were in the same area of this gunman. that is the situation from here. reporting live from northeast washington, i'm sam ford, abc7 news. back to you. leon: all right, keep us

thank you, sam. heartbreak at clarksburg high school after three students there were killed overnight in a crash. maureen: the crash happened on a curve on burnt hill road just before kingstead road in clarksburg. all three students were set to be seniors in the fall. and all were on the football team. leon: our maryland bureau chief brad bell has been there on the scene all day and is there live now with reaction from friends who have to be shocked. brad? brad: oh, leon, they are horrified by what has happened. this is the scene. this is where the crash happened. you can see police have one lane closed off. people have been coming to pay their respects. sadly, this is something we have seen too much over the years. a country road, a hill, a curve, too much speed and then a crash. these were the kids everybody knew. >> they were all fun, just loved to hang out, have a good time. they were just buds that you can count on. brad: jacob dennis, patrick shifflett, cary greene. clarksburg high school juniors and

>> they all played football. they were all great players. brad: just some of the thoughts shared by the dozens of young people coming to the spot where last night the three teens died. jacob dennis driving his new pickup. shifflett and greene his passengers. about 11:30 last night heading home from a party along burnt hill road. too fast, police say. and on this corner, dennis apparently lost control. montgomery county police captain saying there is no indication alcohol was involved. more likely, driver inexperienced. police are investigating whether dennis was even allowed nonfamily passengers. >> summer season among us. tragedies like this will happen far too frequently if parents and the community doesn't have courageous conversation with our kids to remind them to be safe and come home safe. brad: clarksburg high going ahead with commencement ceremonies today. a bitter-sweet time for many. >> they were all in one circle of friends. everyone loved them. and everyone just wante

have fun with them. brad: well, as he said and as we said, these were the kids that everyone knew. and tonight, the community, the clarksburg and damascus communities are gathering at the difference makers church in damascus for a vigil at 7:30. in clarksburg, brad bell, abc7 news. leon: okay. thank you, brad. what a tough situation there. now as brad said, today's graduation took place with a very somber tone. many of the victims' classmates learned about their deaths at that ceremony. clarksburg principal whiting called for a moment of silence for three people he had known for years. >> i was the principal of rocky hill middle school when the young men were in middle school. i have known them since they were 11 years old. leon: this marks the second deadly incident involving a student this year. a train hit and killed a sophomore who was also cl

maureen: a call for he from a frightened mother led to gunfire and the shooting of a stafford county sheriff deputy. tonight the sheriff's department says the deputy's bulletproof vest saved his life. stephen tschida has new details from the scene. stephen: the tense scene after a violent shooting. a call came in about 10:00 p.m. a woman said her estranged son was breaking into her home. when they rivered, deputies entered the timehouse and climbed the stairs. there on the floor, they say they encountered 18-year-old joshua sumter. when told to raise his hands, sumter allegedly pulled a gun and started shooting. during the exchange, one of the deputies was struck repeatedly. >> there were four shots, three or four shots in the hip, the thigh, the arm, and the upper chest. stephen: the deputy is expected to survive a potentially fatal shot thanks to his bulletproof vest. the injured man was rushed to

meanwhile the suspect took off running. sparking a massive search. >> many, many units were mobilized. he was apprehended in a relatively nearby subdivision called thomas jefferson place townhouses at 5:45 this morning. stephen: but while n custody en route from the sheriff's office to the jail, sumter attempted to get away and allegedly assaulted another deputy. so now the 18-year-old who allegedly tried to break in the townhouse is behind bars facing a slew of charges, including the attempted murder of a sheriff's deputy and assault. stephen tschida, abc7 news. maureen: a teacher is arrested accused of taking inappropriate pictures of female students without their knowledge. 38-year-old todd scriber was teaching at bethesda-chevy chase high school last october when a student says she noticed him holding a cell phone beneath her skirt. an investigation began a

he no longer works for montgomery county schools and he is charged with six counts of sexual abuse of a minor. leon: overseas now to a developing story out of tel aviv, israel, where police say three people are dead and at least five others were injured when two gunmen opened fire. reports say there were shootings in two different locations near a huge popular open-air market. both gunmen have been detain and police say both suspects are mens of -- members of the same palestinian family. maureen: in the blink of an eye. coming up, how after five and a half years this video was able to secure the conviction of a murder. leon: also, the national cathedral is going to be removing confederate battle flags that are start of two large stained glass windows there. what it plans to do with them coming up. doug: we have our eye on the weekend forecast. a lot of activities this weekend. the weather you need to know still to come on "abc7 news at 6:00".

leon: breaking news from annandale where fairfax county police say a second person has died in a domestic shooting incident. the woman and the man were shot on a home on beverly drive around 1:00 this afternoon. the man died there at the scene. woman died a few hours later at nearby inova fairfax hospital. police do have a suspect in custody. maureen: a jury has convicted a prince george's county man of murder with the help of his victim. leon: melvin pate

after the 2010 shooting. he died before the case went to trial. but the jurors saw a video of pate identifying jermaine hailes by blinking at his photo. hailes' attorneys objected to the use of that video but the maryland court of appeals ruled it a dying declaration so it was able to be used in court. hailes will be sentenced in august. maureen: changes are coming to the stained glass windows at the washington national cathedral. representations of the confederate flag will be removed. plain glass will replace them. work will start at the end of summer. the changes come nearly a year after south carolina's governor ordered the confederate flag removed from statehouse grounds. that was triggered by a deadly shooting at a black church in south carolina by a white suspect known for embracing the image. once the confederate flag glass is removed, it will be used as a centerpiece to trigger a national conversation about racism in the church. leon: it felt like spr

leon: a memorial service for muhammad ali will be held friday in louisville, kentucky. today, hundreds of people came to stand in line to get a ticket to the service. the 74-year-old boxer died last friday after a long battle with parkinson's. people started lining up at midnight just for a chance to get a ticket. tickets to his memorial were supposed to be handed out wednesday morning but the line started forming at midnight. 15,000 tickets were handed out on a first come, first serve

we'll have complete coverage of muhammad ali's memorial service friday starting at 2:00 p.m. you can watch the service live on the sister station newschannel8 or streaming on the website wjla.com. maureen: a local nurse has been convicted of sexually abusing patients in several hospital emergency rooms. jared klein was found guilty today in d.c. court. he was accused of abusing patients at george washington university hospital, washington hospital center and united medical center. the incident happened in 2013 and 2014. he was found not guilty on similar charges in prince george's county. leon: if you are a regular drive in northern virginia, i'm sure you have noticed a spike in congestion this week. is that because of metro's safetrack plan? a lot of folks say yes. our transportation reporter brianne carter went out looking for some answers to that question today. she is live in arlington to tell us what she found. all right, what is the word? brianne: well, officials warned all of us about added delays

because of safetrack. take a look here now. not too bad along 66. we are seeing some congestion there inbound. but this morning drivers say bumper-to-bumper backups were almost unbearable. some commuters heading east in the city, the same direction of the impacted section of the rail system say their trip today more than doubled. along 66, some drivers say they saw more single drivers violating the h.o.v. rules. we went to state police for answers. state police say day sta isn't immediately available yet -- data isn't immediately available whether troopers issued more tickets this week compared to previous weeks but a spokesperson says the virginia state police say the department and the troopers are out enforcing the rules. a majority of the troopers now this week are having to respond to the increase in traffic crashes resulting from overall increase in volume they have seen in the past three days. well, that volume isn't just felt on the highways as a drive
