captions paid for by cbs television distribution announcer: from abc7 news this is a breaking news alert. alison: good afternoon. we begin with breaking news coming to us from the u.s. capitol. moments ago we heard the capitol police are now investigating a suspicious package that is just outside the u.s. capitol visitor's center. the area is on lockdown. authorities are asking people to avoid this area. of course this is not entirely unusual around here for this to happen but we are still waiting for more information on exactly what the situation is. michelle: we will keep an eye on the situation out there. as soon as we get an update on that we will circle back to that breaking news. alison: meanwhile, chaotic shooting scene captured on cell phone video outside a major u.s. airport. michelle: a man shot by police at love field. >> the moment caught on camera.

[gunfire] alison: we are monitoring developments coming out of dallas right now. >> leon harris at the live desk. it looked like the shooting was contained outside the terminal. leon: that's right, scott. i took place outside baggage area outside by the curb. take a look at the video again. [gunshots] you can imagine it must have been a chaotic scene. they believe it stemmed from a domestic dispute. they say they have learned there are no other injuries involved here. suspect smashed out a car window outside the baggage claim area where a rock from the landscaped area across the street. he charged officers with that rock. that is when they shot him. the airport was not shot -- shut down. >> that is not the case. the airport is not shut down. but they are having to rescreen

marci: a final farewell to an icon. >> everyone is showing their respect and love for this great man. marci: celebrating the life of muhammad ali. his boxing career the least of his inspiring impact on the world. >> thanks for inspiration. i can do anything and it doesn't matter where you come from. you can be anything you want to be. marci: eulogies with bill clinton and billy crystal. mike tyson among the pallbearers. more than 15,000 of his fans shared in today's memorial service. tens of thousands more lining the streets of his hometown of louisville. chanting, throwing flowers as the 19-mile funeral procession paused by his boyhood home. before making its way to the

his legacy living on. the details of this day were planned years ago by ali himself. it was so important to him to have the fans be a part of this. for those who couldn't be inside the service watched outside on big screens. others coming by the memorial here to pay their respects. marci gonzalez, abc7 news, louisville. scott: over the past week, we learned just about everyone who had the opportunity to meet ali described it as a life-changing moment. we caught up with a family who reached out to us at abc7 showing the moment they met the greatest of all time. but as jay korff reports, this is actually a photo bomb for the ages. jay: there are probably countless pictures of people posing with boxing legend muhammad ali. this picture tells a hilarious and a touching story about the champ and the people drawn to him. it was taken by eric hodgkin's mother

always maintained his innocence. he won the right to a new trial, successfully arguing that key evidence was withheld. the next hearing before the trial is now scheduled for july 22. michelle: "7 on your side" this afternoon with help for washington gas customers who have had trouble paying their bills online. thousands struggled to successfully navigate and get through the payment process leading to gas being shut off and other penalties. a "7 on your side"'s chris papst in the newsroom with the fix. chris: the software error affects tens of thousands of customers. on your side" know 18,00000 customers stillomers. "7 on your side" know 18,000 customers still have problems paying their bills or getting their bills. this started in december when washington gas updated the online billing system. at that time, customers started having a lot of problems. some could not log on to their accounts. others would pay but the payments were not going through. then many were

police are asking for your help to find this man. he is suspected of a sexual assault. it happened yesterday morning inside of a business in the 4000 block of garden city drive. police believe the suspect followed the victim from the new carrollton metro station to the business before attacking her. other metro riders say they are not surprised. >> this location is not very secure. i have reported lights out before. the police need to probably step up their presence, if that is an issue. michelle: if you know who the suspect is or his whereabouts, prince george's county police want to hear from you. scott: the first full week of metro safetrack program in the books. alison: that is right. it's the suspect now of our letter -- it's the subject of the abc7 instapoll. can you rate the first week of safetrack? michelle: yeah. get those votes in. we will check in on the results in a bit. but first head

brianne carter with the problems this week and a look ahead. brianne: it's been seven days of safetrack. a week of adjustments for riders and drivers. the workweek started with confusion and chaos at the ballston station as riders on orange and silver lines ease into new commuting habits. with more than 25% less riders on the rails west of the single-tracking at ballston, the traffic quickly jammed on the roads. >> i did not expect it to be this long. it was definitely excruciating. brianne: that work to replace that section of track continues until next thursday. then the first station shutdowns begin. for 16 days, potomac avenue and stadium armory stations will be closed. in addition there will be no rails and no bus service between arlington cemetery and rosslyn station. until further notice riders on orange, blue, silver

michelle: samuel ellis will spend a few years in jail after a wreck. alison: he pleaded guilty. scott: it crashed last june after he and his friends were at a party and had been drinking. but some say the punishment is too lenient. kevin lewis has more from rockville. kevin: samuel ellis faced up to 20 years in prison. prosecutors were begging for at least 12 years but after a four-hour long sentencing hearing, montgomery county circuit court judge robert greenberg sentenced ellis to four years in prison with the possibility of parole after only one year. prosecutors and the families of both young male victims were certainly taken aback. for one, ellis had four previous run-ins with police for drug possession, alcohol possession, drunken fighting and public intoxication. but the 19-year-old had also made some jailhouse phone calls recently ahead of

sentencing during which he bragged about writing a somebody story apology to sway the judge. in another phone call he complained about being locked up, saying he wanted to be at the beach having a, "lit good time." the general consensus is that samuel ellis got off easy. >> i would say that is too lenient only because of his priors, with the possession with intent, this that and the third. >> i don't think it does any justice. two young men were killed. i think he should have received appropriate sentence for that. >> i think he probably should have been reprimanded stronger than what ended up happening because of the intent and the evidence they found him saying blatantly this is what i did. i should be somewhere else right now. that is not okay. kevin: we did contact judge greenberg's chambers today seeking a comment. his staff later called us back saying the judge precludes himself from speaking with the media. all new at 5:00,

you about the key evidence that judge greenberg has now sealed from public access. life in rockville, i'm kevin lewis, abc7 news. alison: we'll see you then. thank you. a lot of reaction this week of course to the stanford sexual assault case. now vice president joe biden is speaking out. he released an open letter to the survivor of this attack saying that she will never be defined by the act, but her attacker, former stanford swimmer brock turner will. turner was sentenced to six months in prison but is expected to serve half of that time. scott: hockey legend gordie howe has died. the 88-year-old suffered a serious stroke in 2014 that led to him having stem cell treatment in mexico. his family said howe was making significant improvement. howe who layed for the detroit red wings was considered by many to be known as mr. hockey. michelle: changes coming to facebook, including adding a video option for comments. you can now upload a video as a response. the feature lau

the weather will cooperate. i will be comfortable. a bit of a breeze on the mall. it will slowly drop to the 70's but a comfortal night to be -- comfortable night to be sky watching. we have temperatures with 60's in the morning. it's a milder morning than the past couple of mornings. 63 in the city. 66 in fairfax and ashburn. tomorrow there is a potential for scattered thunderstorms. we are only giving it a 30% chance. we have a marginal risk of thunderstorms. but farther north to pennsylvania and new york state there is a better chance and possibility of severe thunderstorms as well. the future cast shows clouds moving in. a warm front moves in overnight. along the warm front, scattered showers early in the morning. but more than likely just areas of cloudiness. the winds will turn southerly and then southwesterly. throughout the day the winds get gusty and the temperatures will climb to 90 or higher. in the late afternoon or the everything hours that is the

michelle: "star wars" actress daisy ridley opening up about how she is taking control of a secret health struggle. battling endometriosis since she was 15 years old. scott: it's a painful condition that affects estimated one in ten women. alison: we have her story. reporter: she plays the fierce head-strong rei in a galaxy far, far away. >> i'm not kidding you. >> we'll see. reporter: but daisy ridley is now revealing a secret that is much closer to home. writing in a post on her instagram account on thursday, "at 15, i was diagnosed with endometriosis. eight years down the line the pain was back. more mild this time. finally found out polycystic

>> this is more of a metabolic syndrome. reporter: endometriosis is hard to diagnose and occurs in women of child-bearing age. ridley said her skin was the worst. >> cases can have high level of male hormones to cause acne. reporter: but she said with dietary changes she is feeling better, saying help from a dermatologist and cutting out dairy except for spontaneous ice cream and sugar. but you have to go what you have to do. her advice is to take matters in your own hands. if you are suffering with anything, go for a doctor, pay for a specialist. get hormones tested and allergy tested. scott: good for her to be open about her condition. alison: it may help other

announcer: you're watching "abc7 news at 4:00". on your side. alison: we are back with a "7 on your side" consumer alert tonight. if you are looking for a moving company. michelle: the attorney general of maryland accuses a local murder of bait and switch. scott: "7 on your side" consumer investigator kimberly suiters caught up with the company owners in court this week. kimberly joins us. kim, the

you. kimberly: no, they were not. here is why. when we first reported this in the may, we only heard from consumers complaining about best offer moving in maryland. but the owners tell me they want to tell the side of the story and clear their name but they can't yet. this is the company that runs best offer moving. they were less than pleased to see a "7 on your side" camera at the hearing before an administrative judge. they said the government is twisting the facts to make the company look like a scam company. he wants to explain the side. but their attorney on the right there is advising them to wait until the legal proceedings are over. proceedings that started because of one customer named carlyn lucas. >> i was like they have to be crazy. this is not what they told me. kimberly: lucas claims they quoted her a low price upfront and she alleges after the furniture on the truck

bill quadrupled. when she would not pay, they drove off with her goods for storage facility for which she could also be charged. bait and switch. >> total. >> it's illegal. >> it's illegal. kimberly: the attorney general of maryland says it is also illegal to hold goods hostage. he tasked the personal protection division to get them their things back, which they did and investigate the company on behalf of all consumers. in court thursday, government lawyers, the group in the dark suits over there, argued the company low estimates were, "bogus traps got lure in consumers -- to lure in consumers. if the consumers knew how much they would be charged they would run away screaming. but the couple and the lawyers say the majority of their customers are happy and say, "consumers don't think an estimate is a final price." they wanted to prove the point by playing a recording of a phone conversation with lucas. but the judge would not allow

defense attorney did not show it to prosecutors in advance. the judge has 90 days to rule. bags now need to be replaced. scott: why is the federal government letting some automaker sell brand new cars with the same air bags? here is lisa fletcher. >> takata air bag explodes when it should have inflated. it happened in a test at the lab. according to the congressional report, the metal from the air bags killed 13 motorists and injured another hundred people. >> this is a core safety feature of the car. one of the things that is supposed to make the car safe enough to drive it. >> they have ordered the recall to make it largest in history. they continue to sell brand new cars with the same air bag known to become defective

overtime. why aren't they putting the foot down to stop sale of the new cars that could kill drivers and passengers? >> i don't think that we have enough intestinal fortitude around here to stop the sale of new cars. >> transportation secretary anthony fox declined our request for an interview. >> you are saying you don't have the authority. >> correct. >> they say they can't ban auto makers selling new cars with the defective air bags and they can't order them to disclose information to the car buyers. around consent order takata has not admitted they are at fault but they have agreed to recall the new car air bags by 2018. the same year it will stop manufacturing them. >> american families are going to the dealership, buying cars and thinking they are buying a
