lisa: thank you, leon. f.b.i. director james comey says it is all hands on desk as the agents examine every aspect of the shooter omar mateen to understand the killer, his motives and sources of inspiration. >> there are strong indications of radicalization by this killer and potential inspiration by foreign terrorist organizations. lisa: a three-hour standoff. more than 100 people lives in the balance. scott shaneer worked at the nightclub. >> we feel numb. we are a close community. we may not be directly close friends with any of the victims but we are all going to know the names, we're all going to go, oh, yeah, i have seen that person, i talked to that person. we doctors, lawyers, teachers, brothers, we're sisters. this community has been devastated light now. lisa: devastation that played out live for 911 operators for whom mateen spoke three separate times in the attack. >> he called and he hung up. he called again and spoke

then he hung up. then the dispatcher called him back again and they spoke briefly. so there are three total calls. during the calls he said he was doing this for the leader of isil, who he named. and pledged loyalty to. lisa: oddly, comey said, mateen claimed solidarity with several extreme organizations some of whom are enemies of isil. >> we can highly confident he was radicalized and some part through the internet. lisa: they are reconstructing his electronic devices. it's reported that the f.b.i. is investigating whether mateen was potentially targeting disney world. he pleaded with americans not to be paralyzed by fear and to channel anxiety in awareness. he said in every f.b.i. case, someone always sees something they should have told them but didn't. as of a few minutes ago, 43 people are still

condition. alison: all right. thank you very much. you know as this investigation continues tonight we are hearing more stories of survival. during the moments the gunman started shooting. here is how one man says his son described the terror he went through. >> he got shot. he threw himself to the floor. then he got shot again when the gunman came over and he lifted up his eyes a little. just laid back down. he noticed that the girl he was holding hands with, all of a sudden let his hand go. he noticed she got shot and she didn't make it. alison: powerful images coming out of orlando showing the grief being felt there. in one piece of video a woman seen crying, holding on to flowers just outside the pulse nightclub. here in our region there has been an outpouring of support as well. that includes in dupont circle where people are sending messages to the victims. that is where we find our mike carter-conneen tod

mike in mike: alison, even though this happened hundreds of miles away, many in washington's gay community feel a strong connection, a sense that this easily could have happened here in our area as well and here in due mont circle -- dupont circle, the center of the gay community. abc7 rolled out a banner. "washington, d.c. is on your side." hundreds of people coming through here. locals, tourists, visitors coming to sign this, send well wishes, messages of condolences. many of them saying they wanted to say or do something today. >> i felt like i had to do something. >> in the aftermath of the violence, lgbt washingtonians are shake calling this attack on their gay brothers and sisters in orlando in the middle of pride month surreal and senseless. >> i keep crying. i just don't understand that level of hatred and contempt. >> it's like where does it stop? the solution seems very simple. it seems very simple. but unfortunately the simplest things are the hardest to

attack, even before all the victims were identified, heartache transformed to heated debate with back and forth on cable channels and social media over gun control, homophobia and terrorism. >> we need to address the issues at hand. we can't just be passive. mike: but for now as we learn their names and see the faces, many say this tragedy makes them realize it's a small world. and the gay community is even smaller. >> i knew friends that knew people that were there. it was incredible to see how much of an impact that makes, the ripple effect of people's lives. >> so much of the celebration to commemorate those who were lost. mike: gay or straight, there is a common reaction. this is an attack on all of us. >> just because it's a gay bar doesn't mean there are only gay people there. mike: we welcome you to come down and sign the banner here at dupont circle. it will be here until 6:00 tonight. we will send it to orlando. you can see other

this weekend's pride festivities, flags, candles, flowers and beads dropped here. there will be a 7:30 vigil here tonight. another vigil, we saw one last night. there are other events and vigils across the region. for a full list go to wjla.com. reporting live in dupont circle, mike make, abc7 news. alison: in the last hour, mike captured video here of d.c. police officers around some graffiti on the sidewalk at dupont circle that read "down with the gay agenda." the word "gay" crossed out and replaced with "gun" so it reads "down with the gun agenda." no word for the graffiti that has taken place. leon: for the shooter, omar mateen, authorities are continuing to uncover more about his background now. the f.b.i. twice investigated mateen for possible ties to terrorism. that happened in 2013 and 2014. they interviewed him three tim

mateen at that time was not a threat. there has been no evidence to suggest he received training or material support from isil. meanwhile, mteen's ex-wife told abc7 news he would regularly beat her and was full of hatered, especially toward people who were gay. >> he would express his anger toward a certain culture. there were moments that he expressed intolerance to homosexuals. leon: mateen was an american citizen born in new york. he attended high school in florida. he remarried a few years ago and had a 3-year-old son with his second wife when he carried out the attack. the flag at the u.s. capitol is flying at half staff in the memories of the victims at orlando. president obama issuing a proclamation ordering the u.s. flags be flown at half staff until

thursday. terry mcauliffe ordered the state flags to be lowered as well. alison: president obama today said this season attack on all americans. we need to look after each other. that lead him to bring up the topic of gun control. president obama: we have to go after the terrorist organizations and hit them hard. we have to counter extremism and make sure that it is not easy for somebody who decides they want to harm people in this country to be able to obtain weapons to get at them. alison: of course, once again the debate over gun control is being put front and center in this country. abc7's brad bell has more on that part of the story. brad: well, the reactions to what happened in orlando of course going from sadness to outrage. but also now to a renewed debate about guns. we in silver spring we have been talking to people and we are hearing passionately eld beliefs. the orlando killer carried a

style rifle. both purchased legally under federal and florida law last week. facts which tonight are again fueling debate about the availability of guns, especially high-capacity assault style rifles. >> they should absolutely be banned. there is no reason that anybody should have an assault weapon at all. brad: the divide is stark. some believing the second amendment guarantees the right to own guns of any sort. others in favor of an outright ban. >> this is a crazy world. you know, like i should be able to protect myself against a group of people coming to rob me. or some crazy guy about to stab me. brad: assault rifles were bannehid for several years ending in 2004. they are currently illegal in d.c. and maryland but not virginia. the orlando tragedy prompting calls tonight to reinstate that federal ban. >> i think it isr

for us there right now. marci: it's hard to put into words the depth of the heartbreak. her son of the woman you heard from is one of the victims, one of those that did not survive the nightclub shooting. with ehear more and more stories like hers. we heard about the horror last night. all but two victims have been identified. we are seeing the families who have been gathering at a hotel not far from here, waiting for updates on the loved ones. coming out of there after learning the news. i don't know how to describe how crushed they look as they leave there. it is absolutely heartbreaking. flipping through the channels this morning, i saw reporters, anchors breaking down in tears this whole community is really just so clearly affected by what happened here. people looking for ways to show their support for the

the vigil will be held a few blocks from here later this evening. people also have been coming out and bringing water to those of us here and to the investigators out there. we are hearing stories of people offering up their homes to victims' family members coming into town. we have seen those lines of people wanting to donate blood yesterday. the blood blanks were at capacity and had to turn people away. that is how much the community is coming out to show their support for the victims and for the families. alison: so many people, you know, still thinking about those who are in the hospital. so many people there in the hospital. i have to tell you, marci, on a personal note it's surreal to see you stand there. that is where i grew up. right down the street. pulse used to be a pizza place we visited with my family. i know my parents said everything there is silent, sort of somber. but what you said about the blood banks, that is so encouraging. that is the orlando i know from growing up there.

all charged with trying to have sex with children. among those accused montgomery county police officer christopher dunkes. our kevin lewis digging into this case for us tonight. kevin: montgomery county police hired dunk dunk in february of 2014. most recently assigning him here to the bethesda station. this evening he is behind bars of prince william county on no bond status and the own department placed him on unpaid leave. montgomery county police officer christopher dunkes would start and end his work shift here, at the second district station in bethesda. today, however, he appeared in prince william general district court on charges of child solicitation. >> we don't want to conduct the operations. but it's not the age we live in. kevin: last week, prince william county undercover detectives placed ads on craigslist, posing as a 15-year-old girl. all six of these

replied, including officer dunkes who e-mailed and texted the fictitious teenager suggesting they meet at a target store to engage in oral sex inside of his personal vehicle. >> this isn't a prince william problem or a region problem. this is a nationwide problem. this happens everywhere, in every community. that's why we conduct the operations. kevin: authorities say parents should take note of the 21st century, often evasive crime. >> if you look at the mugshots of the people we arrest, there is no set mold. no set look. i can be anybody, any occupation. for parents it's important to have the talks with their kids about the dangers of the internet. kevin: the men arrested in the online sting range in age from 20 to 58 years old. all of them live in virginia except for officer dunkes who has an apartment in gaithersburg. live in bethesda, kevin lewis, abc7

"your voice, your future: terror alert." hour long broadcast. it will be dedicated to what happened in orlando and where the nation goes from here. that is at 7:00 p.m. on the sister station newschannel8. leon: moving on now to other news. closing arguments made today in the trial of a fairfax county lawyer accused of brutally assaulting a couple inside their home. jeff goldberg is live with the details. tell us about it. jeff: well, closing arguments took up most of the day today so the jury didn't get the case until 3:30 this afternoon. no verdict today. it will resume tomorrow morning. last week when he took the witness stand, in his own defense, andrew schmuhl said he did not remember a single detail of the crime that took place. today, the prosecution imploring jurors not

his lawyers. the fact that andrew schmuhl was arrested after the crime wearing only a diaper is evidence according to the defense that he was not in his right mind. defense attorney brad haywood arguing today that schmuhl was so intoxicated by opiate prescription drugs at the time of the crime he didn't know what he was doing. overwhelming bill fear, disorientation, paranoia and confusion andrew schmuhl is accused of bursting in the mclean home of leo fisher and sue duncan, tasing, beating and stabbing fisher and shooting at duncan. prosecutor arguing today that schmuhl was driven by greed for money and by revenge after fisher fired andrew's wife alecia from her lawyer job at a firm in arlington, dismissing the intoxication claim prosecution arguing this was a perfectly evil plan carried out by a lucid crimin.

they also laid blame on alecia schmuhl calling andrew a foot soldier. they said she could have stopped it. the plan was her plan. they concluded calling andrew schmuhl a con artist two wanted to kill fisher and duncan, highlighting duncan's quick thinking to play dead and trip the alert alerting police. they overlooked one major thing, they said. the power of the human spirit. the will to fight for life. now one point the defense and the prosecution are in agreement on, they both believe alecia schmuhl is guilty of carrying out this crime. her trial will happen in the next several months. the difference being prosecutors saying andrew schmuhl and alecia schmuhl were equal partners in carrying out this attack. asking jurors to finds him guilty. deliberations resume tomorrow morning. jeff goldberg, abc7 news. alison: thank you. coming up next on "abc7 news at 5:00" -- the s

>> d.c. mayor muriel bowser fulfilled a campaign promises today. the largest city homeless shelter in decades is law. sam ford explains what happens next. sam: with homeless advocates and the government officials in the room, mayor bowser signed a law to close general d.c. homeless shelter after building new neighborhood shelters across the city. >> in partnership with the council we have a plan we can live with. sam: after a series of public hearings and reactions the council changed a number of the mayor planned sites in the city's eight wards. in ward three the shelter will now be next to the second district police headquarters.
