about the man who burst in the club and started shooting at orlando. alison: roz plater is at the terror alert desk now with the newest information. roz? roz: we are getting bits and pieces of information about the 53 survivors, some of whom were in grave condition. we are told half were taken to the surgery yesterday. more today. all are still struggling to recover. in the aftermath of the deadly mass shooting in orlando, grieving relatives are getting confirmation their loved ones were lost in the carnage at the pulse nightclub early sunday morning. some are understandably lashing out at the suspected shooter. >> you stole someone away from a bunch of people that cared and loved him so much. you stole a lot of people away from their families. roz: this is as we learn more about the man who authorities say carried it out. omar mateen. born in new york to afghan parents. at this point of the investigation we're told there

by any terrorist organization. rather he may have been inspired by them, perhaps even over the internet. >> this is certainly an example of the kind of homegrown extremism all of us have been so concerned about for a long time. roz: we also learned the f.b.i. once tracked mateen back in may of 2013. after the agency got disturbing reports he claimed his family had connections to al-qaeda and that he wanted to become a martyr. >> over the next ten months we attempted to determine whether he was possibly a terrorist. something we do in hundreds and hundreds of cases all across the country. roz: meanwhile for the family members of the 49 who died and the other victims who struggling to survive, it will be a long road to recovery. orlando's lgbt community and city leaders are coming together to denounce the attack and lend the families
