on this tuesday, june 14th making news in america, we remember the victims in the orlando nightclub massacre and an emotional gathering in orlando and other vigils around the world as more stories of heroism emerge. new details about the shooter, a look inside his apartment after it was raided by the fbi and a witness saying the shooter was seen many times before mingling at that same gay nightclub. >> he would try to meet people and try to bump up against people. >> plus, the gun shop owner who sold the shooter his weapon speaking out for the first time. a protest on capitol hill. some lawmakers walk out during a moment of silence demanding action on guns in america we're live in washington with the late. the kevlar

the gunfire. the s.w.a.t. team who was wearing it. quite an image, the bruise on that s.w.a.t. team member. we say good tuesday morning. we are learning a lot more this morning about the massacre in orlando including that new information that the gunman had apparently frequented that same nightclub in the past. >> this was the scene in orlando last night as nearly 8,000 gathered for a candlelight vigil. a nearby church bell tolled 49 times, once for each victim killed. >> and all of those victims have now been identified by authorities. their families being told about their loved ones, so arrangements can be made. >> president obama will personally meet some of those families on thursday when he visits orlando. abc's elizabeth hur is there with the latest on this investigation. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: diane and kendis, good morning to you and, yes, as the search for the motive continues here at the scene this

search of this the suspect's apartment is revealing. no sign of the devotion to isis he professed. from paris to new york and here in orlando, touching tributes. >> to the family and friends of the victims, your city is with you. >> reporter: a message of hope for communities still reeling from that night of terror. daylight now revealing the wall of the nightclub riddled with bullet holes and authorities releasing new information about why the s.w.a.t. team moved in. >> they said he had a vest and did talk about putting it on some of the hostages. >> reporter: that suspect, 29-year-old omar mateen killed in the gun battle with police was able to legally buy the weapons used in the massacre despite having made two trips to saudi arabia and being under fbi surveillance for nearly a year for possible links toism interest. >> i don't see anything in reviewing our work that o

differently. >> reporter: the fbi says it never found evidence that mateen was a terrorist and the gun shop owner says there were no red flags. >> an evil person came in here and held multiple security licenses and passed the background check. >> reporter: in ft. pierce a look inside his apartment after it was raided by fbi. this video provided to abc news by a univision tv crew showing family photos on the dining table and walls and expired florida firearms license and the room of the terrorist's 3-year-old son filled with toys and a bike with a spider-man helmet. well, as for those injured in the shooting, 34 are still in the hospital and some of them together with the surgeons who saved them are expected to share their stories of survival later this morning. diane and kendis. >> all right, elizabeth. what do we know so far about the shooter's ex-wife saying that he was scouting some other targets

there? >> reporter: yeah, we are learning from a senior counterterrorism official that number one mateen's ex-wife is cooperating with the fbi and also she is telling investigators that mateen may have scouted several locations for his attac including disney properties here in orlando. now, disney, the parent company of abc, would not confirm this report but they did say that it has increased security measures across all disney properties in what it calls a world of uncertainty. diane. >> it is a world we're waking up to nowadays, elizabeth. elizabeth hur for us in orlando. meanwhile, a patron of the pulse nightclub tells abc news the gunman used to come into the club on a regular basis. >> james van horn says mateen would visit for a few weeks at a time on weekends and then he wouldn't be seen for awhile. van horn claims mateen was coming to the club for two years. >> my friends came out and said, oh, come on in the back we'll take pictur

they said we don't like you talking to him. this has been like six months ago. and i said, why not. they said, well, we don't like him. he's weird. he's weird. he would try to meet people and try to bump up against people and put his arm around and maybe try to dance with them or something because that's what everybody tries to do. it's not like he just sat there and stared at people. he was an active person that tried to, you know, to find somebody maybe to go to bed with at night. >> van horn also said that he recalls talking to mateen about his divorce from his wife. also there was a report from our houston station that quotes a man saying he was contacted by mateen on a dating app. >> as we mentioned all of the victims killed in the massacre have now been identified. one young woman who lost her life left behind more than she could possibly have known. >> yeah, she had absolutely no idea that she was documenting her final moments as abc's amy robach

taken next and tempers are flaring up on capitol hill. we get more now from abc's lana zak. >> reporter: congress divided in anger over the mass shooting in orlando. >> networking and information technology -- >> reporter: democrats tried to advance gun control legislation. >> i'm particularly interested about three pieces of legislation that have been filed --% only to be cut off some even walking out during a moment of silence. >> i will no longer stand here absorbing the full concern and tepid smugness of a house complicit in the weekly bloodshed. >> reporter: while on the campaign trail donald trump is expanding his proposed immigration ban. >> i will suspend immigration from areas of the world where there is a proven history of terrorism. >> reporter: but that ban wouldn't have stopped the shooter in orlando. like trump himself the shooter was born a u.s. citizen in new york. but trump had a different spin on the campaign trail. >> the killer whose name

calling the paper phony and dishonest. the editor of "the post" says they're proud of their coverage and will keep at it. the trump camp has revoked them for "the daily beast" and politico and cited a headline linking the president to the shooting in orlando. isis claiming responsibility for another deadly attack and once again the target is france. survival stories inside the orlando nightclub. people hiding in rooms and texting their loved ones. we'll tell you about the heroic moments starting to emerge. tornadoes spawned overnight. we're going to tell you where it's all heading right

want to get to breaking news from france. a terror investigation is under way after two police officials were stabbed to death. those two officers were husband and wife, their attacker had a past terrorism conviction and had claimed allegiance to isis. he was also killed. but the couple's 3-year-old son was rescued by commandos. french officials reveal this morning there have been more than 100 terror-related arrests in the past month. we have some new pictures of the severe weather that hit oklahoma and texas. that's a twister you're looking at touching down in amarillo. the same storm system brought in flash floods and power outages and it's not just texas dealing with severe weather. on the radar you can see the powerful line of storms stretching from new mexico to the dakotas. today those storms are moving into missouri, minnesota and parts of iowa. it was a night of contrasting emotions at game five of the nba finals. >> the evening started with a large american flag and the former nba start grant hill who spent a lot of his carr

check out this scene at colorado's famed red rocks amphitheater last night. people got stuck in a flash flood and they were waiting for the steely dan concert to start. >> a look at morning road conditions. severe weather is a threat in the central plains as well as the upper midwest from minnesota to kansas. now heavy rain is also possible from minneapolis to des moines. >> flying could be a challenge for some with airport delays possible in minneapolis, kansas city, new orleans, memphis and atlanta. updating our top story now roughly 8,000 people gathered last night for a candlelight vigil in downtown orlando and they listened as the church bell tolled 49 times for each of the victims killed. >> the president will meet with the victims' family members when he visits orlando on thirst and for the first time we're hearing from a patron of the pulse nightclub who

had been visiting the club for two years. now, the families of the 49 people who lost their lives early sunday morning are now planning, of course, their final good-byes. >> while those arrangements are being made many of those injured remain hospitalized. abc's david muir has been speaking with some of the people who were at the club that night and made it out alive. >> reporter: we met malcolm barazzo. he was one who got out and still stayed to help the other victims. even as the gunshots continued. you can see him his hat on backwards helping to put victims into any vehicle they could find. when there were no ambulances in sight. they were putting victims into this pickup truck. >> his eyes were like -- they were rolling to the back of his head and he was with, you know, there were people -- there was four or five of us carry him and one girl said i can't do. >> reporter: malcom said he is still horrified by how one person can inflict so much harm. >> how a person can do that to someone they don't know like

down on friday night. hundreds of people gathered for a candlelight vigil in grimmie's new jersey hometown. the 22-year-old was shot and killed as she signed autographs after a concert in orlando. the gunman fatally shot himself, adam levine has offered to pay for her funeral. in los angeles a body was discovered after crews responded to a massive fire at a vacant office building. five people who appeared to be unauthorized occupants were in the building at the time of this blaze. according to. 0s, that is, one of those people is being questioned by police in connection with the fire. and in new mexico a close call for three people, sta state trooper was helping a stranded truck driver and the truck rolled into traffic and a semi slammed into it and rammed into a police car and burst into flames. you can see it there with the driver trapped inside. well after several mens that driver was rescued. coming up, a surprise appearance at a vigil for the orlando

this morning.. the world continues to mourn the 49 people shot and killed at a gay nightclub in orlando over the weekend. president obama will travel there on thursday to pay his respects. as the victims are remembered, officials are beginning to paint a clearer picture of the gunman, omar mateen. we now know the shooter may have considered other targets, including disney world in orlando. there are also reports out this morning that the gunman frequented the nightclub for several years - and had engaged other men on gay dating apps. but this morning -people throughout our area are paying tribute to the shooting victims. at least five vigils were held last night.. including this one at the unitarian universalist congregation of sterling. about 150 people were there.. hoping to send a message of unity. they represented religions from all over the world. during the vigil,

people spoke and sang. they later walked outside, carrying candles. sponsors of the vigil included the all dulles area muslim society, and loudoun interfaith bridges. in dupont circle in northwest d.c.. another vigil. many people who gathered there to remember the victims are members of the l-g-b-t community. they say they're stunned by the loss of dozens of lives at pulse nightclub in orlando. the muslim american women's policy forum organized the vigil.. in an effort to promote unity. during the event.. there were prayers in many languages. yesterday, abc7 brought a banner to dupont circle for people to sign with their condolences and thoughts for orlando. we'll be sending it to "the center" in orlando this morning -- that's an organization that works to promote and empower the l-g-b-t

everyone who stopped by to sign. around the world -- and here at home: tributes to the lives lost in orlando. the eiffel tower, lit up in the colors of the rainbow flag in support of the l-g-b-t community around the world. of course the pain of terror attacks still fresh to the people of paris -- after the attack on that city back in november. and closer to home -- the capital wheel, also lit up in the colors of the rainbow. the wheel is equipped with over one and a half million lights. it's xx and we're just getting started. the city of orlando - and the world standing together to remember 49 lives lost. how the victims are being honored this morning. and we are learning brand new information about the gunman this morning. the latest on possible plans to hit disney - along with reports that he frequented the nightclub where the shooting happened for several years.
