announcer: now "abc7 news at 4:00". on your side. alison: right now at 4:00, tragedy at a disney resort near orlando. a toddler pulled under water by an alligator. >> we know that that happened and it certainly is not survivable at this point. alison: we will tell you disney's response to the danger lurking there in the water just ahead. michelle: plus new developments in the orlando terror attack. and a plea from investigators. >> we want to hear from you. you have come through for me. michelle: who officers might be closing in on at this hour as the investigation continues in orlando. scott: thanks for staying with "abc7 news at 4:00". we begin the hour with the latest on the nightclub terror attack in orlando. alison: the f.b.i. wrapped up a news conference a couple hours ago saying it is following any and all leads. michelle: today, no new arrests as officer

information from the gunman's wife. we have more on the day's developments. reporter: at the center of the investigation, did omar mateen's wife noor salman know he was planning mass murder? law enforcement officials say she allegedly went to buy ammo with mateen, visited pulse nightclub with him once and she may have tried to talk him out of committing an act of violence. now the f.b.i. is asking for help. >> regardless of how small the information may be, i still want to hear about it. reporter: details emerging including a threatening facebook message mateen posted the same morning of the attacks. "taste the vengeance" he wrote. and signs that mateen possible pli struggled with an inner conflict. professing to hate homosexuals but a former classmate with this. >> if you were gay, you would be my type of guy. reporter: mateen's victims speaking out about coming face to face with the killer. >> he looked deranged. he looked like something was mentally wrong with him. reporter: she spent hours

who would not make it. in the wake of the shooting, democratic lawmakers are taking up the fight over gun laws again. >> i'm prepared to stand on this floor and talk about the need for this body to come together on keeping terrorists away from getting guns. because i know we can come together on this issue. michelle: that threatened filibuster on the hill still going on at this very moment. you can see here on the senate floor, a lot of folks are still fired up about the issue. in a moment we will address what appears to be a change in policy from the n.r.a. but right now a look at how the victims of the orlando nightclub terror attack were honored here in washington today. [bells toll] just before noon today the sound of the morning bell at the washington national cathedral rang out. 50 times the bell

immediately go to court, block the sale and arrest the terrorist." the n.r.a. called for due process in a potential investigation. the attack in orlando, and after similar attacks we have seen spikes in gun purchases. brad bell joins us live with this side of the story. brad? brad: the folks here have been kind enough to allow us in the store. it happens every time something like this happens in the country. there is an uptick in the sale of guns. in particular this sort of gun. the so-called modern sports rifle or a.r. type weapon. sales picked up yesterday. at maryland small arms in upper marlboro it hasn't started yet but the salesman expects that the sales will pick up. >> the politicians start to beat the drums about gun control, i'm sure we will see increase in the sales, especially in the a.r. type

boy alive, at last check they were still out there looking, trying to bring some level of closure to the devastated family. search teams scouring a vast measure of waterways to look for any sign of the 2-year-old boy and the alligator that snatched him last night as he waited in ankle deep water at a disney resort. >> it's not survivorrable at this point for him to have been submerged for this period of time. we know that this is a recovery effort. >> at least 50 law enforcement officials and helicopters boats diving in the murky water looking nonstop since the first horrifying 911 call came in at 9:167 last night. the family on vacation from nebraska was on the shore of the manmade seven seas lagoon at the grand floridian resort for movie night. the boy playing in inches of water with a four to seven-foot gator grabbed him. his parents trying desperately to save the

>> the father entered the water. tried to grab the child. was not successful in doing so. i'm told the mother may have also entered the water. marci: the area was warmed with no swimming signs but no sign about alligators. disney showing this and the other lakeside beaches. >> everyone at the walt disney resort is devastatedded by the tragic accident. marci: officials here say several alligators have been capture and euthanized here today. you can see the podium set up right now. we are expecting an update from the sheriff's office here any moment. live in lake buena vista, florida. michelle: we'll take that when it gets started. but switch gears to the weather. some of you may have seen passing shows

friday. we will talk about father's day weekend. scott: we are continuing to follow local breaking news from yesterday. two still remain in critical condition after a tour bus carrying 18 passengers hit head on with a car on the g.b. parkway. one person was killed. police say it could have been a lot worse if good samaritans hadn't pulled over, got out of their cars and help lift the bus back on the wheels. northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg is at the accident site. where some evidence still remains. >> two people in critical condition, one in fair condition. all three at inova fairfax hospital. we are standing a mile away from where the crash took place at the g.w. parkway. the spot it happened is a mile away to the entrance of mount vernon. you can see the pieces of debris from the crash on the ground by the site. as well as a large tire track. an

the bus went off the road. mid-size tour bus north on the parkway collided collided with a passenger car headed southbound. the bus carried 18 parms and a drive all -- passengers and a driver all from china. the bus tipped over on the left side. witnesses say six to 20 passerbys, possibly military members stopped at the scene and lifted the bus back to the wheels and administered aid to victims until emergency personnel arrive. park police say the heroic actions undoubtedly helped the safety of those injured. >> to have people participate like that is great. >> i'm proud of them. they should have. i would expect it. >> the u.s. park police are still following up on leads to hidefy the heroic individual -- to identify the heroic individuals. we did get in touch with public affairs officer and they are

florida, sheriff. we are learning reports that the child's body has been found. the 2-year-old boy after a gator snatched him from his parents. we'll have the news conference from the sheriff office with the latest information. reports that the child's body has been found. we'll have more as soon as it happens.

michelle: a cyclist was rushed to the hospital this morning in northwest d.c. after a bike and car collided. this is on ontario street and columbia road at 9:00. the drive says he was trying to get out of the way of an on coming ambulance and did not see the cyclist. the woman was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition. alison: finding parking around the city and in certain suburbs can be difficult. michelle: familiar problem. drivers have to deal with costly tickets and hard-to-find spaces. scott: some businesses are struggling to turn a progress. kevin lewis is live in rockville. did you find a parking spot there? kevin: surprisingly with great ease today, scott. take my word for it, that is typically not the case. we are reporting right now along a stretch

"regal row" that consists of a movie theater flanked by half a dozen or so restaurants. this week some of the owners spoke at a rockville city council meeting arguing that the limited parking, aggressive parking enforcement and $40 tickets for an expired meter have eaten away at the res specktive bottom lines -- respecktive bottom lines. after subtracting expenses like respect, utilities he is losing money every month. it has caused him to contemplate shutting down. the ben & jerry franchise says if nothing changes there will be a lot of boarded up store front. as for guiseppe's, the co-owners contend barely a day goes by without a customer lamenting about the cost and the inconvenience of parking. >> they told me, "we still love your place but we got outside and we paid for the

underneath the windshield," a $40 ticket. the meal went from $45 to $85. they weren't happy. we didn't see them after that. kevin: all right. the folks here at guiseppe's believe the city of rockville is taking the concerns seriously. new at 5:00, i will tell you what ideas to fix the problem are being tossed around. live in rockville, kevin lewis, abc7 news. michelle: okay. thank you. let's get a check on the traffic situation at this hour. eric smith is here with details. the doesn't look good, eric. eric: it's a tough ride out there. all over the place. this is 395 north near the pentagon. a tough ride across the 14th street bridge in the city. onto the freeway. so that is all going to be connected. take a look at the southeast/southwest freeway. this is the westbound side. this is just jam packed either way you go. no accidents to it. it's all just volume heading this way. also looking at

virginia. we do still have tough delays northbound into springfield out of route 1. southbound traffic is heavy. looking at the overall map. that is going to be a tough ride. around the beltway as well. we have some solid delays if we can take a look at the camera north of dulles toll road. tysons to the 270 spur. you can see more of that here heading to the legion bridge. both ways here for the beltway. jampacked. accident on the outer loop and typical volume for the inner loop. that is a very tough ride for you. same story up to the river road for the beltway. this is going to be a really tough ride for both directions on 495. that is all from the traffic center for now. back to michelle. michelle: thank you. take a look now at this wild weather stirred up in south dakota. this is video of one of two tornadoes to form in that state. good news, though, no report of damage or injuries. scott: scary.

steve: we have been lucky around here. we count our blessings and enjoy what we have now. we have changes on the way, especially tomorrow evening and friday morning. then things will improve dramatically. let's talk about going swimming. how does that sound? they're doing it this evening. no problems at all. we look outside. looking at really not a lot. 80 degrees. passing clouds here and there. not amounting to much as we move through the early evening hours. 79 degrees in manassas. 84 in leesburg. we are looking at the satellite and the radar now. it's just a few showers, just south of us around fredericksburg. those are fizzling out. anything that we see in the next hour or so shouldn't apt to a lot. more on the way in terms of the heavier rain that will arrive late tomorrow evening through the overnight hours into early friday morning. that will be the best chance to see localized flooding across the mid-atlantic. in d.c., this is where the action is located now. part of a warm front draped across west virgin

scott: the press conference started in orlando. head down there now. the missing boy, the boy dragged in by the alligator. let's listen. >> we are here this afternoon to give you an update on where we are with this recovery effort. we will share with you that we just met with the family. we spent some time with them. and deliver this update. at about 1:45 today, members of the orange county sheriff office dive team

of the deceased, the 2-year-old. identify him in a few moments. at 3:30 today we recovered the remains of the 2-year-old from the water. that body has now been turned over to the orange county medical examiner's office for an autopsy. the family i will identify. the parents are matt and melissa graves. from elk horn, nebraska. the 2-year-old is lane graves. i will share with you that the child was found, his body was completely intact.

so at this time we will go through the formality of making a formal identification. but there is no reason for us to believe that the body that was recovered is not that of lane graves. the effort to continue with the wildlife management here at disney will go forward. i will turn it over at this time to the executive director who will share with you more details about their efforts. >> thank you sheriff demings. first again we want to say that the thoughts and the prayers are with this family. we are

at the outcome. i want to thank sheriff demings and the orange county sheriff office throughout the entire tragedy. that i have been great to work with. they are a benefit to the community. i would like to thank disney. they have been totally cooperative as we worked through this in how we handled the tragedy. although we have some sort over close -- of closure, the investigation is still ongoing. we are going to continue to evaluate the evidence we have. and we are going to try to continue searching. we will make certain we have the alligator involved and that we remove it. we remove it from the lake. so we are going to verify we have captured that alligator through forensic work or we are going to continue to look for an alligator until we find the right one. we will work with disney as they continue to address alligators park.

we do deliver a message to you. the message is they do appreciate all the prayers that have gone forward to allow those of us working on the professional side to do our jobs. to recover their son. so they can move forward at this time with proper burial. on behalf of the family i deliver the message to you. it was a tough message to deliver to them to let them know at this point their child is dead. at this time we will entertain a few questions. reporter: how important is it to find the alligator? do you fear it could do it again? sheriff demings: again, there were several alliga

located. i will let the f.w.c. director speak to you about the process they use to confirm one of the alligators located is the right one or not. >> just really quickly. we are going to look at the five alligators we have taken and we are going to compare things like bite marks and such as that. we don't know what we have yet. it is still early in that part of the investigation. there is a good chance we already have the alligator. we focused the efforts in that proximity and that area where the incident occurred. there is a good chance. but we are going to go through the process and the forensics to make certain. if we can't get a certain match we will go out and look for alligators to make sure we have done everything we can and all the due diligence to make sure we have taken the alligator out. it's important to do that. reporter: where did you find the alligator? sheriff demings: i believe the question is where did we find

he was within the immediate area where he was last seen. it took some time to go through and make certain. the water is murky. but the divers were able to locate the body. we used sonar equipment and means to go in and recover remains. reporter: was the body found intact? reporter: [inaudible question] sheriff demings: the autopsy has to confirm that. there is likely no question in my mind that the child was drowned by the alligator. reporter: should there be a sign to warn people about the alligators? sheriff demings: there is signage that says no swimming. disney will look at all of their protocols and the signage going forward. reporter: do you recommend they add the signs to warn

sheriff demings: this is a partnership. our ultimate concern is about the safety of the guests at disney as well as the public. as the investigation continues we will continue our death investigation with the orange county sheriff office. i'm certain that there will be opportunities opportunities in the future to look at what has occurred to see if it can be prevented in the future. they were sitting outside the area. beach like area. they were enjoying the evening. they have a 4-year-old child. there was a playpen nearby. the 2-year-old was just along the edge of the bank playing in the water when this occurred. >> do you believe that the signage is inefficient, sheriff? reporter: did you deliver the message yourself to the family? what was their reaction? sheriff demings: i delivered the message with a previous, previous, -- message along with a priest, a catholic priest. of course the family was distraught but also i believe somewhat relieved that we were able to find their son with the body intact, one. and two, he was located so they can come to grips with what has happened. reporter: you have seen the

michelle: look at the stories we are tracking locally. metro safetrack surge is almost complete. single tracking along the silver and orange brought the commute for some to a crawl. not just metro riders. today news comes metro was able to complete more work than expected. abc7 transportation reporter brianne carter is in arlington with the development. brianne: take a look. this is the stretch of track we are talking about. you can see the difference. on the right the part they have been working on for 12 days. on the left the part they have been running the trains along. this is surge one, one day away from ending. the work being done we understand for the most part ahead of schedule. they completed more work than expected when it comes to replacing the fascinators on the rail. i believe laters on the track.

there is still work to be done when it comes to the third rail which is the section of the track that powers the train. of monday, 2% of the work completed. we saw the crews in and around the rail. the work is set to wrap up tomorrow night. saturday it will shift down the line. with two stations in between closed for 16 days. today the metro officials made a plea to the orange, blue, silver line riders to change the commute common. -- commute come monday. >> this is inconvenience. do we go wuah, wuah way and have train wrecks or deal with it to get it over with? it's the root canal you never wanted. brianne: we expect this to continue tomorrow as originally schedu
