this morning on "world news now," fighting for change. senate democrats taking a stand on capitol hill, pushing for new measures in the wake of the orlando terror attack. as we're learning more about the victims' ordeal inside the nightclub. we have new details in that deadly alligator attack. search teams have discovered the body of the 2-year-old boy after he was snatched right in front of his parents. and new this half hour, extreme heat giving way to dangerous fires in the west. evacuations are under way as the latest wildfire scorches parts of california as other residents return to their charred homes in other parts of the state. and it is a first for the royal family. guess who has now become the first royal to pose on the cover of a gay magazine. >> george. >> no. >> charlotte. >> possibly. >> t

>> hmm. that would be too easy. it's thursday june 16th. >> took you a while. you got there. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning to you all. i'm diane macedo. >> and i'm kendis gibson. we want to get started back here in the u.s. this half hour with a rare event that is taking place right now. a marathon filibuster on the floor of the senate for gun control legislation. >> that's right. that's democratic senator chris murphy leading a filibuster. this is a live image from capitol hill. he is talking there right now. murphy and other senators have been speaking since 11:21 yesterday morning in hopes of forcing a vote on gun legislation in the aftermath of the tragedy in orlando. >> now, murphy of course is also talking about the newtown school shooting and other mass killings. he s

floor until there is some signal that they can come together on the issue. as you just heard him say. he is getting some help, we should point out, from new jersey senator cory booker, who plans to stand with him, like literally stand up there on the senate floor with him during the entire thing. and so far murphy, hours into this marathon, has not taken a bathroom break. >> wow. >> and other senators have been helping him out as well. dick durbin from illinois. and the senate, though, is also looking into a series of explosive facebook posts made by the killer the day of the shooting. >> he rails against what he called the filthy ways of the west, blaming the u.s. for the deaths of innocent women and children. the senate homeland security committee has now sent a letter to facebook ceo mark zuckerberg requesting information and a briefing on the shooter's online activity. and the gunman's wife remains very much in focus for investigators. sources tell abc news that she began

spotted her in surveillance video which showed her with her husband as he bought ammunition. >> she eventually said that she tried to talk him out of harming anyone. it remains unclear if she knew an attack was imminent. >> reporter: and as that investigation moves forward, several new pieces of video have surfaced. we have details on the first of them from abc's brian ross. >> reporter: for the first time we hear the voice of the killer. >> good morning. >> good morning. you have a badge? >> reporter: omar mateen as a disgruntled security guard caught on tape in a documentary called "the big fix" at the site of the 2010 bp oil spill. >> no one gives a [ muted ] here. everybody's just out to get paid. >> all about the money, right? >> all about the money. >> reporter: in 2013 mateen was sounding more than just disgruntled and he was removed as a private security guard at this florida courthouse. >> there was a comment made about his allegiance to the ft. hood shooter. and those comments brought

immediate alarm to my staff and their supervisors at the courthouse. >> reporter: the sheriff called the fbi, one of the two times agents investigated mateen and concluded he was not a threat. all this, his ex-wife tells abc news, as he was struggling with his sexual identity and becoming unhinged. >> and he was ill and he needed help and he could not be his true self. >> reporter: now as the fbi seeks more information on mateen's path to that terror-filled night in orlando, officials say they have discovered he was active online, using at least four separate facebook accounts. on the night of the shooting he wrote, "now taste the islamic state vengeance," adding "in the next few days you will see attacks from the islamic state in the usa." and then just before he died in the shootout with police mateen took the time to call a local tv station. >> he cut me off and he said, "i'm the shooter. it's me, i'm the shooter." and i didn't know what to say. and he started saying he did it for the islamic state, he did it

for isis. >> reporter: and now another possible missed signal. the owner of a gun shop in jensen beach, florida says mateen came in trying to buy body armor and bulk ammunition but he turned him down because he was suspicious of mateen and then called authorities to report his suspicions. that was three weeks before the shooting. there's been no immediate comment from police in florida. brian ross, abc news, new york. >> eye opening there, brian. thank you. we also have a second piece of new video recorded while the attack was happening. the dark images show clubgoers huddled together in a bathroom. the man who recorded it, miguel leyva, says up to 30 people sought safety with each other for four hours. leyva was injured and says he and others sent that video to loved ones to let them know they were still alive. and the latest information we have is that 25 victims remain hospitalized, six of them in critical condition.

the first two funerals for those killed in the massacre will take place today. president obama and vice president biden will be in orlando to meet with the victims' families as well as survivors. the orlando shooting is still looming large in the race for the white house. donald trump is planning to meet again with the nra, and he's now saying that people on the terror watch list should not be allowed to buy guns in this country. hillary clinton is responding to that saying, "welcome to the cause." more now from abc's jonathan ç karl. >> reporter: donald trump seemed to come out in support of an idea hillary clinton has been hammering since the orlando massacre. >> if the fbi is watching you for suspected terrorist links, you shouldn't be able to just go buy a gun with no questions asked. >> reporter: the specific proposal -- if you are on the fbi's terrorist watch list or on the tsa no-fly list, you shouldn't be able to buy a gun. in a tweet trump proclaimed, "i will be meeting with the nra, who has endorsed me about not

allowing people on the terrorist watch list or the no-fly list to buy guns." it could put trump on a collision course with the nra and most republicans. >> by the way, i'm going to save your second amendment. okay? i'm going to save your second amendment. >> reporter: trump has opposed any new restrictions on gun sales, and he said if more people were armed in that orlando club fewer would have died. >> you would have had a situation, folks, which would have been always horrible but nothing like the carnage that we all as a people suffered this weekend. >> reporter: the nra opposes banning gun sales to people on terror watch lists, saying those lists include innocent people who should not lose their constitutional right to buy a gun. their statement, "we are happy to meet with donald trump. the nra's position on th issue has not changed." and hillary clinton's message to trump -- "welcome to the cause." jonathan karl, abc news, washington.

after nearly 18 hours of searching, dive teams have recovered the body of that little boy who was snatched by an alligator at disney world in florida. >> and he has now been identified as lane graves, who was visiting the area with his older sister and his parents. lane had been playing on the beach in ankle-deep water when the alligator suddenly appeared and dragged him underwater. search crews found his body not far from that spot. >> the child was found. his body was completely intact. and so at this time we will go through the formality of making a formal identification. >> the sheriff also says that he and a catholic priest broke the devastating news to the boy's distraught parents. a message he says was very difficult to deliver. as many of you know, this one does hit home for many of us. disney's a parent company of abc news. so all our hearts go out to the graves family. we have new details in the

sex scandal rocking the oakland, california police department. the interim chief has been removed after just six days on the job. the mayor said a number of factors caused her to lose confidence in ben fairow. the police chief that he replaced resigned abruptly amid allegations that a number of officers had sex with a teenage prostitute. and in baltimore the defense is expected to begin its case this morning in the trial of police officer cesar goodson. he's accused of murdering -- of murder, rather, second-degree murder and other charges in the death of freddie gray. goodson was driving the van that gray was riding in when he suffered a fatal spinal injury. overseas now. oscar pistorius will learn his new sentence for the murder of his girlfriend in three weeks. the former south african olympic runner removed his prostheses in court yesterday and hobbled on his leg stumps as a judge looked on. the demonstration was apparently an attempt by pistorius's defense team to portray him as a

vulnerable man who deserves leniency. prosecutors are calling for him to be sentenced to at least 15 years for the death of reeva steenkamp. we have breaking news now from california. a new wildfire is forcing residents out of their homes. the sherpa fire is burning in a heavily wooded area of santa barbara county. gusty winds are helping spread those flames. at least eight air tankers and six helicopters are trying to battle back. and in northern california residents have been allowed to return home after leaving from -- evacuating, rather, from a fire in calaveras county. the cheyenne fire is now about 50% contained. officials say it was sparked by a lawnmower. here's part of the problem in that area. heat will reach extreme levels in california over the next few days. today there's the threat of severe storms in maryland, virginia, west virginia as well as pennsylvania. >> looking at temperatures, extreme heat, and humidity in the central and southern mississippi valley as well. it will feel like 110 in dallas. coming up, the chaotic scene in northern france. why riot police were forced to use tear gas again

the ongoing tournament has been plagued by fighting and security issues. and here at home the judge in that case of a former stanford athlete is facing some fresh fallout. >> anger has been growing over judge aaron persky handing down that six-month sentence to brock turner. and now he's been removed from presiding over a new sexual assault case. abc's matt gutman with the latest. >> reporter: the gavel closer to coming down on judge aaron persky, who sentenced stanford swimmer brock turner to what became a three-month jail term for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. in a damning reversal santa clara county d.a. jeff rosen, who supported persky last week, now saying "we lack confidence that judge persky can fairly participate in an upcoming hearing in which a male nurse sexually assaulted an anesthetized female patient." the d.a. called icing persky a rare and carefully considered step. public defender gary goodman called it a political step against persky.
