and a good friday morning to all. we're learning startling new details about the orlando gunman and his wife. the couple was apparently texting one another during the rampage. >> okay, so right now it's not clear whether his wife was aware of what he was doing at that time. both she and the shooter's father are now on a no-fly list as they remain under scrutiny. >> president obama and vice president biden joined the survivors and their families in florida. abc's adrienne bankert joins us with more on what was an emotional day in orlando. adrienne. >> reporter: yes, diane and kendis paying tribute to the 49 souls lost the president speaking on how he believes it will take stricter gun laws to prevent shootings like this while questions remain like ow lone wolves could slip through the cracks? president obama and vice president biden laying a white rose for each life lost at the pulse nightclub. mourners gathering to attend

with nightclub employees making a plea for more action. >> if you have lone wolf attacks like this, hatched in the minds of a disturbed person, then we're going to have to take different kinds of steps in order to prevent something like this from happening. >> reporter: this as the fbi has yet to comment on additional warning signs that point to omar mateen's disturbing behavior. including suspicions from the owner of this florida gun store. staff contacting authorities when he asked for bulk ammunition and body armor. >> our intuition was correct and it's just very sad that we had him that close. it was that close that law enforcement could have got their hands on him. >> reporter: new evidence points to text messages he sent his wife in the midst of the massacre. multiple sources telling abc news mateen's widow is being cooperative but the fbi still trying to figure

she's being truthful about how much she knew prior to the attack. both she and the gunman's father have been placed on a no-fly list and as the investigation continues, one of the survivors met with the police officer who bravely rescued him in the heat of the gun battle. signs that the community is continuing to be orlando strong. >> so glad you're alive, man. >> reporter: we're also learning more about the gunman's troubled childhood. it shows the shooter exhibited disciplinary problems from as far back as elementary school. >> thank you for that. senator john mccain is placing blame on the white house. he said the president is directly responsible for the attack because he pulled out of iraq and allowed the rise of the islamic state. mccain later walked back those comments slightly saying the president's policies are at fault, not the president himself. and the senate is set to vote monday on four gun control

filibuster. members of both pears agreed suspected terrorists like the orlando shooter should not be allowed to purchase firearms. democrats though want that ban on anyone on that watch list and from buying a gun while republicans want a three-day waiting period to make sure the buyer is actually a suspected terrorist. well, also on capitol hill the cia director sharing a grim update about the war on isis and a very different one from the president's own assessment only days ago. john brennan telling congress that despite losing ground in iraq and syria, the terror network remains a formidable threat. brennan warned the u.s. efforts have not reduced the group's terrorism capability. >> our efforts have not reduced the group's terrorism capability and global reach. the resources needed tore terrorism are very modest and the group would have to suffer even heavier losses on territory, manpower and money for its terrorist capacity to decline significantly. >>

stark contrast to the more upbeat tone offered by president obama earlier this week. the president said his strategy against isis is working and that said president obama's strategy in syria is coming under fire as well this morning. more than 50 diplomats from across the state department urging military strikes against syrian president bashar al as d assad. he has not had to face any consequences for his action, they say and blocked humanitarian aid in regions where syrians are starving to death. there's no indication, however, the president intends to change that policy. bernie sanders is ready to join hillary clinton in the effort to beat donald trum sanders delivered a live speech online saying trump needs to be defeated and defeated badly, but he didn't formally concede or endorse clinton. sanders said his campaign's political revolution would continue beyond his fight for the nomination, more than 200,000 people tuned in for those remarks. donald trump is campaigning in texas marking

launching his presidential bid. anti-trump protesters clashed with supporters outside a rally at gillys featured in "urban cowboy." trump recapped his primary victories and took aim at president obama and hillary clinton over their views on gun control. the shocking murder of a british politician. this morning's "times" of london reporting that jo cox had been harassed in recent months but so far no link between the deadly attack and those messages. cox was stabbed and shot during the middle of the day yesterday. a suspect was immediately taken into custody. police are searching though for a motive. it may however be tied to the upcoming referendum on britain's membership in the european union. cox was only 41 years old. the mother of two young children. this morning, blazing hot temperatures and gusty winds are a huge concern for fire crews across the west. in california, the brush fire north of santa

control and still growing. now at more than 14,400 acres and forced the closure of the main highway in the area, the 101, about 500 firefighters are also dealing with steep and rugged terrain. the national guard has been called to help fight the doghead fire in new mexico which spread to 16,000 acres. winds caused that fire to spread northeast and flames reached as high as 100 feet and planes have been dropping flame retardant. record high temperatures in the southwest won't help those situations. heat warnings and watches are up into monday and well over 100 degrees in the fire zone near 120 palm springs and phoenix, the national weather service calls the heat rare, dangerous and deadly. speaking of hot, that's a good way to describe the cleveland cavaliers. >> they forced game seven sunday night after their second big win in a row over golden state. lebron james led the way pouring in 41 points for the second straight game no

we're getting another look at that crash landing of a spacex rocket on a ship in the atlantic. everything seems to be going smoothly at first. it comes down on the ship just as it's designed to do but then something obviously goes very wrong and you can see an eruption of black smoke from the deck. spacex had three successful landings prior to this. and nasa is expected to make a major announcement affecting the future of flight. the agency is revealing plans for an electric plane with zero emissions. the x-57 will be small seating only a pilot but nasa is also planning five bigger aircraft which could carry passengers and cargo. it will probably take four years before the first plane is

breakthrough in the search for answers following the crash of egyptair flight 804. the cockpit voice recorder has been recovered from the wreckage of the jet. the so-called black box was damaged but the memory unit which contains about two hours of conversation is still intact. it could take, however, up to 48 hours to retrieve the information from that. a first of its kind new tax on soda in philadelphia is lately to end up in court. the tax which amounts to a cent and a half per ounce comes after months of bitter negotiations. it'll be paid by distributors, not consumers. the beverage industry has vowed to fight the tax saying it'll mean lost jobs and place an undue burden on the poor. when we come back developing overnight, singer meat loaf collapsing on stage. the images from inside the venue and new information on his condition. plus, caught on camera, a driver pulled from a smoking car just seconds before it bursts into flames.

autographs for fans at a concert. the suspect then turned the gun on himself. police have not revealed a motive but there are several reports that the suspect was an obsessed fan. breaking news from canada where meat loaf has collapsed on stage in edmonton. video from someone in the audience shows the 68-year-old musician slowly going down then band mates and stage hands rush in to help. fans first thought it was part of the show. meat loaf had canceled two earlier concerts because of illness. he was taken to the hospital by paramedics. his condition is still unknown. a california man is being called a hero for a dramatic rescue pulling this man safely from a burning car. the man was on his way to lunch when he noticed smoke coming from the car. police say he pulled over. the map pulled from the car was suspected of driving under the influence and he may have accide accidentally set that car on fire. now to chaos and panic at a walmart in phoenix after

thankfully no one was injured. in the district-- police make an arrest following a quadruple shooting last week. four people were wounded when gunfire erupted outside a d-c liquor store at rush hour. it happened on south capitol street last wednesday afternoon. police say the driver of the getaway car has been caught, but the shooter is still out there. a bicycle cop trying to respond to the shooting was hit by a car -- but is recovering well. one shooting victim remains in the hospital. anyone with infromation is asked to come forward. turning to safetrack-- listen up metro riders. phase one of metro's year-long maintenance plan is over-- and phase 2 is about to begin. phase 2 starts saturday - and lasts until july 3rd. during that time, the rail will be shut down between the eastern market and benning road stations. stadium armory and potomac avenue stations will also be closed. officials are urging you to plan ahead.
