challenge on the assault weapons ban in connecticut and new york. that leaves a lower court ruling in place to uphold laws passed in the wake of the shooting at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. the company that made the semi-automatic weapons used in that shooting is asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit by the newtown families. lawyers for the families of nine of the adults and the children killed there inside sandy hook elementary school said remington arms designed the ar-15 style rifles as military killing machines. the company attorney says it's projected by an act. alison: we are monitoring a developing story in arlington where the search is on for the man who broke into an apartment, along 4th street north and then sexually assaulted the woman who lived there. mike carter-conneen live on the scene.

mike: we believe it happened behind me in the apartment in the distance. police tell me the victim spent saturday evening in d.c. did the suspect follow her home? investigators at this point say they don't think so. saying that a significant amount of time passed before he broke inside that apartment. but police have not ruled anything out. they are still investigating. including how exactly he got inside. that remains unclear at this point. the neighbors point out there is a lot of residue on the ground floor window. in light of the incident the residents say the officers encouraged him to be mindful, in the warmer summer months about leaving the doors unlocked or the windows open at night. police say the suspect was a stranger to the woman. she was alone in bed not fully asleep when 2:00 a.m. sunday she broke in and sexually assaulted her, threatening her with a knife. at some point she escaped him. got to the bathroom and locked herself inside where she started to yell for help.

cheerleading, more than 44 million children involved in these and other athletic actives every year. how many will suffer head injuries as a result? that is the question researchers at the university of washington attempted to answer in a new study. what they found was surprising. they analyzed three data bases of injuries with the healthcare providers and athletic trainers in high school they found many concussions in kids may go untreated. the research eithers found between 1 and 2 million children and teens suffered sports or recreation-related concussions each year. that roughly half of these children are never treated for these injuries. whether the lack of treatment puts the health of the kids at risk, the research could not say. since so many children each year experience concussions they argue the injuries deserve more attention. so, if it's your kid on the field or the court, be aware of the signs they might have had a concussion. if you think this is a possibility, seek medical

leon: thursday morning we should learn the decision in the freddie gray trial. caesar goodson's closing arguments wrapped up today. brad bell was in the courtroom. brad: prosecutors trying to finish strong telling judge williams they have proven that officer caesar goodson caused the death of freddie gray by failing to seat belt him in a prisoner van and driving in a way that gray would be banged around, a so-called "rough ride" and refusing to get medical treatment

alison: jail or a second chance? leon: a local program is trying to help make the decision for young people caught up in the system. alison: our d.c. bureau chief sam ford shows us how. sam: at the boxing gym on benning road they train young people who ended up in the olympics but mostly it's neighborhood kids who like the sport, the atmosphere. these days some of them have gotten in trouble with police including one we are calling bernard. they are sent here by a diverse program called a.c.e., alternative to the court experience. >> a boy said that he said i said, "give him the knife." i was going to poke him with it. sam: did you say it? >> no. sam: nobody was stabbed but benard was seen holding another boy's knife and showing him around. he was arrested. instead of prosecutors him, they turned him over to d.c. human services city financed ace diversion. the gym is one of aces contractors. >> the evidence shows exposing young people for minor

we are looking at unsettled weather tomorrow. beautiful day on wednesday. showers and storms return on thursday. by friday, it looks fantastic. 80 degrees, a lot of sunshine. that will carry us in the upcoming weekend saturday and sunday around 85 to 87 degrees for day time highs. cooler at the delmarva beaches where the daytimes highs will be in the lower 80's. the nighttime lows will be in the 60's. crank up the heat and the humidity moving to early next week with the highs around 90. check on sports. a lot of going on. erin: thank you, steve. we are still taking it all in after the cavaliers claimed the first nba championship last night in game seven against the warriors. lebron james promised to bring a title to cleveland and the king kept his promise. perhaps the real winner was abc which drew the biggest audience ever for an nba game. leon: wow! erin: well done. the cav

first nba title in franchise history included an extra stop between oakland and cleveland. you know where that is? yes, vegas. why not? get a little celebration time in there. lebron and company arrived before 2:00 a.m. monday to party at a club in the encore casino. then look what was waiting for them in cleveland. thousands of fans greeted the champs. as the celebration continued. we all heard lebron james say all the right thing information the nba finals. he certainly let his play do all the talking. but today his shirt sent a message. it reads, "ultimate warrior." the golden state colors there. seems like he may be rubbing it in just a little bit. you can do that, though, when you are the champion. i'm okay with it. i was an emotional victorfy for cavaliers. they became the first team in nba history to overcome a 3-1 deficit and win the nba championship. lebron also won the m.v.p.
