how much will this cost? tim: the first year it will cost about a million bucks, but officers already have cameras in their cruisers, such as this one. they have had them since about 2009. during that time, these cameras have captured hours of terrifying video. the cameras are now a major part and thislture,c summer, body cameras like this will be a major part of the montgomery county police department. this person is split on the idea because the program is expected to cost taxpayers roughly $1 million during the first year. >> but for that one chance to see something that may not have gone the way it was supposed to, it is worth it. tim: last year the department handed out 85 votto cameras --

85 body cameras as part of a pilot program. he will have 850 on the street this summer. is producing evidence that is keeping criminals off the streets. officers have an app to see what is recording and make sure that it is pointing in the right direction. after they are done with an incident, they can review the video. but the police body cameras have to be turned on manually. what will happen to officers who do not turn on their cameras? >> it is not a gotcha situation. we deal with it on a case-by-case basis. tim: failing to turn on the body camera during investigations is against department policy. privacy is another issue. both for the officers and the community. as for the cases the cameras have helped so far, investigators did not have that information tonight. tim barber, abc 7 news. leon:

happened today in baltimore for the officer who drove the police van that freddie gray was inside when he was injured, leading to his death. in the courtroom today in baltimore, prosecutor tries -- prosecutors tried to drive on the claim that officer caesar goodson intentionally drove the van roughly. the judge will announce his verdict thursday morning. alison: police are looking for the man that a woman said broke into her apartment and sexually assaulted her early sunday morning, near 4th street north and glebe road in arlington. the woman told the police you broke free from the attacker and locked herself in a bathroom. the attacker reportedly ran off when she yelled for help. .> totally surprised we have females at home, my daughter and my wife. alison: the police are asking anyone in the ballston area
