announcer: this is a stormwatch7 severe weather alert. jonathan: it is treacherous out there. we begin with a severe weather alert. strong storms moving through the area. this is what it looked like from frederick county in mobiletrak7. alison: a live look at the district here as the storms make their way through. here we go again. a week ago we were dealing with the same thing. jonathan: now we have reports of hail. a lot of things are happening this afternoon. we have team coverage for you on what is happening outside. richard reeve covering the storm in mobiletrak7. brianne carter following the storm damage. alison: but we'll start with meteorologist steve rudin. he has been tracking the storms since 1:00 this afternoon. what is the latest? steve: a busy afternoon at abc7. the strongest storms are settling further south. first things first. the entire area in pink that indicates a severe thunderstorm watch until 9:00 tonight. i suspect that parts of this will come down way, way before then. the area you see in orange, fairfax coun

william, severe thunderstorm warning for another 15 minutes until 4:15. then another cell across southern maryland. calvert county where that is going to extend until 4:45. that is where they have report of golf ball size hail near waldorf. convert to doppler radar for you. the district here, capital beltway right here. southern edge of the capital beltway. springfield is further south. that is where we are looking at the heavy rain and the severe thunderstorm warning in effect right now. widen things out a bit. if you are watching us in gaithersburg or frederick county to hagerstown, things have really started to settle down. from the core of the action now just in the south and the southeast of the d.c. metro area across southern maryland. this all moves on toward the south and the east at 40 miles per hour. heading in closer. the boxes on the screen, that indicates a severe thunderstorm warning. if you are in lorton, heavy rain. the same for mount vernon to old town alexandria. all of this moves to the

on this, between 40,000 and 50,000 feet. so some very, very strong storms. some very tall storms. that is why we have had the ground stops at reagan national airport, the same at dulles and b.w.i. marshal. these are going to begin to improve in the next couple of hours or so. waldorf right now is where we are experiencing the heavy hail at this time. golf ball size reports at this hour. all of this moves toward the south and the east with the wind gusts likely upward of 60 to 70 miles per hour. we'll take you out and look around the capital beltway. d.c. right over here. west bend there. dupont circle, upper northwest d.c. further south is where we have the heaviest rain just outside of rosslyn to reagan national airport. down to old town alexandria. all of this moves across the river to oxon hill, national harbor, the gaylord resort. you look for gusty wind and heavy rain with a lot of lightning. the storm reports we have everything from ha

that are popping up around the metro area. nothing inside the beltway. no active tornado warnings at this time. look at the latest warnings. the district, montgomery county, anne arundel, prince george's under severe thunderstorm watch until 9:00. the areas in orange, two separate watch boxes here. this one for fairfax and prince william until 4:15. the second one for southern prince george's, charles and calvert county extends until 4:45. we will keep you updated moving through the afternoon hours. we head to richard reeve. richard: steve, it has been a challenging day for anyone behind the wheel trying to get around. let's show you where we are right now. just outside bowie. you can look and see the skies still look nasty out there.

anything else is downed trees. a large group of downed trees on 70 west just outside of columbia. we are in the parkway and there were more trees down there. we are on the way to the town center in bowie to check out report of another fallen tree. it has been a big headache for a lot of people hitting the roads, trying to get around the debris. we saw a lot of debris also heading eastbound on 70. it wasn't nearly as severe as the westbound lanes. the westbound lanes got terribly tied up. it got down to one lane at one point. like i said, right now we are starting to get into the brunt of the commuter hour. this will be the big challenge for people on the roads. back to you. jonathan: rich, thank you. drive safe. brianne carter joining us live from centreville, virginia. the roads are closed in one area because the wires are down. the wind that came through there was something else. brianne: in the last 15 minutes they got t

the grounds. the roads are reopen and the police are clearing out. 20 minutes or so ago it was a downpour here. take a look at this intersection. we are talking lee highway and bull run post office road. you can see the scene off the road there, traffic is once again moving. the roads were bone dry before that rain as quickly as it started to usher in a downpour. it moved right on out and the sun is starting to come out here again as well. now the roads were closed for quite some time. more than two hours. we did see a verizon truck go down there, so not clear whether or not it was electric or a verizon cable that dropped there on the road. right as the road dips. so the traffic was being diverted for over two hours. just in the last 16 minutes, the traffic coming back online. those that are going to come home down 29 here, traffic is back open to those drivers at this hour. this as we continue to watch the storms as they move past here because i have to tell you. as quickly as they moved in and a downpour hi

you can see the sun back out again here. back to you. alison: thank you very much. let's go on over to maryland now. brad bell live in upper marlboro with what is going on there. brad? brad: yeah, well, she said it. they come in, they go out. when we got out of the car to set this up a few minutes ago it was pouring! a deluge. now the rain has stopped. you can see where the clouds have gone. a very black, gray sky in that direction. looking southeast. we heard the reports about large hail down in waldorf. when we pack up we will head down the road to see if we can find out if that was true. so much rain. puddling here. a lot of it has run in the storm drains. the good news as we said is clearing up. looking north to bowie and where richard reeve is heading, blue sky. we will pack up and head south to see if we find out if there is any hail in waldorf. we will get right back to

let's go ahead and get a check on the traffic situation overall. jamie sullivan is here with what is going on. jamie: we are starting off with a ten-mile backup on 95 northbound in virginia. ten-mile backup from an earlier accident. this is not even due to the rain. this is from the accident that closed down near 123. you can see still very heavy traffic. i want to move further north. with the rain coming down, it wasn't earlier when we had the crash we are seeing the areas where it's not so great. let's run through a few of the camera shots for you to give you an idea. we move to look at them. we are seeing 66 issues. this is along the capital beltway. this is still dark. 95 now. if you are heading north closer to the springfield interchange. we are seeing a lot of the volume as well as you are traveling in on 66 through annandale to the capital beltway. this shot shows you near the capital beltway. you get an idea. rain drops all over the camera but you really see the road spray kicking up.

and the warnings to your phone from the newsroom. as the storms make their way through the area we are curious of the video and pictures you take out there. a lot of folks are taking great pictures of the some blowing through. if you see something, send something. pics@wjla.com. all right. following now a developing story that happened out west. look at this. high heat and the dry conditions make it impossible to fight some of the fires that are burning. in fact, this is the perfect storm for fire conditions that are happening. a lot of big fires are burning right now. the conditions so bad that some of the crews have to back off. they can't fight them. right now we no two fires are burning near los angeles. they already scorched 5,400 acres and forced thousands of people to evacuate. a total of 17 large wildfires right now burning in eight western states. that includes alaska. alison: developing news at home in arlington. firefighters are investigating an underground transformer fire. amy aubert with the massive fire

shopping area. amy: smoke pouring through the street. cell phone video capturing the whole thing. >> the flames got up to about 30 feet. it was pretty frightening. amy: neighbors in the apartment waiting in shock just beyond the yellow tape. >> we actually watched the fire for ten or 15 minutes keep building and getting bigger. then the flames started ten minutes later. amy: fire crews responded before 9:00 this morning saying a transformer vault in the street caught fire. >> at that point the crash unit from the national airport was asked for the dry chemical and the foam capabilities. amy: crews from across the area responded to the three-alarm fire. as thick, dark smoke flowed through the complex along clarendon boulevard. >> the blame was huge. almost as tall as the building over here. there was smoke. i'm sure you could have seen it for miles away. amy: crews could no

steve: our severe weather coverage continues on letter and newschannel8. we'll see what is going on with the latest warnings for you. southern maryland, southern prince george's county, charles and calvert county, severe thunderstorm warning until 4:45. you just notice the one for fairfax and prince william has now canceled out at 4:15. things are beginning to improve a bit out there. we'll show you doppler radar around the capital beltway. rough weather for the southeastern quadrant as the cell slowly advances toward the south and east. we will show you the wider view with the one storm or the biggest of the storms now moving across southern maryland. another system or storm off i-81 south of woodstock. that sals -- that is also severe thunderstorm warning. north and west of us a few showers blossoming around winchester and hagerstown. but the strongest or the most severe weather moves on off toward the south and east. we are going to look for the conditions to gradually

improve. but it doesn't necessarily mean some of the storms out here won't be warned on in the next hour or two. once the sun sets this evening at 8:30, that is when we start to see the real big improvement. the strongest of the largest storms are now moving on off across southern maryland. eventually across the bay. we will track the storms for you throughout the next couple of hours. as always on wjla.com. stay with us. i'll keep you updated. jonathan: thanks for that. check out this scene. this was a very fast-moving fire ripping through the barn in fairfax county. it was burning early this morning. it happened 3:30. this is on band thompson road. fire officials say the barn was empty. no animals, no one was hurt. this is the second time in a week the warn caught fire. last week part of the roof went up. the investigators ruled that an accident. but today's fire is still under investigation. dispute between two neighbors takes a very nasty turn. maryland bureau chief brad bell with how one of the

kicking and killing a little dog. brad: jessica and seth say they adopted the puppy harley three months ago in part to help jessica over the loss of her father. >> he stole our heart quickly. stole everyone's heart quickly. brad: now the cup is mourning what they call the murder of their tiny chihuahua. >> i'm just hurt. i feel like a part of my heart was ripped out of my chest. he is so innocent. brad: the couple says the neighbor sabrina killed the puppy in a rage, angry that her husband was visiting seth and jessica's home rapid not answering her calls. they say she kicked the little dog off of their porch. he died in minutes. >> harley didn't do anything to her or anyone. brad: the couple is speaking out and mounting a facebook campaign for justice for harley. richards the across the street neighbor has been charged with

>> richards was not available for comment. brad bell, abc7 news. alison: well, covering metro now. today is the second weekday of the safe track surge two. part of the track is shut down in the district and virginia. the track is closed on the orange, blue and the silver lines until eastern market. shuttle buses are replacing trains but expect them to be packed. officials say you should expect at least a half hour delay. there is also no service between rosslyn and arlington national cemetery. every step of the way abc7 will have what you need to know about safetrack on a special safetrack page on the website wjla.com. you can get metro updates sent to your phone. text "metro" to 43817. >> with the weather outside it makes it challenging for traffic. it's already challenging to begin with. get to jamie sullivan. roads not moving too good for

jamie: they are not. we are seeing it in areas, especially in virginia. focusing on 66. the beltway through annandale and 95 where the rain came through and was the harder. 66 is typical as it heads southbound. beltway through annandale to get closer to tysons. we are seeing about this pace. and that continues to montgomery county. then 95 is the big problem spot. you can see a lot of the heavy volume heading northbound. we have had a ten-mile backup. moving to the maps i want to talk 95 and virginia. this is from an earlier accident. now we are getting better. all lanes are open. not by much. you see a solid red line north from triangle to lorton. here is what we have. the roads are wet out there. be careful. the slowest spots, let's talk. 45 minutes from quantico to dale city. dale city getting to the capital beltway just under

that is not a huge stretch either. of course the outer loop in montgomery county under 40 minutes. as you travel and work your way closer to the 270 spur. we still have a few green areas. the roads are wet. polls down, trees down, wires down. we are hearing about that in a few areas in anne arundel county. and in great falls, we have brianne carter headed to the scene to check out a closure that we have. that is a look at traffic. we'll keep you updated. jonathan: thank you. alison: steve is here with a little bit more on what is going on, who is under the gun, what is next. steve: this started around noontime hour. we have been going at this now for four hours and 20 minutes. i will come to an end in theneck hour or two. that is -- in the next hour or two. that is the good news. the story we heard about the gusty wind and the heavy rain and the hail. a lot of hail. this is from edge water, maryland, in the past hour. ouch! this hurts. it hurts to watch it. that looks like quarter size hail there.

have had golf ball size hail in waldorf. jonathan: yikes! steve: that is a lot of hail that causes damage. thank you, ryan clark, for sharing this with us. excellent video. we would love to see what you have. send it to us. look at what is going on with the latest severe weather watch. the severe thunderstorm watch. it is in effect until 9:00. the area in pink. as we move through the next couple of hour osso, this -- hours or so, this will shave off at 6:00 or 7:00 and then we will cancel the whole thing off. the area in orange are active severe thunderstorm warning. this one here for southern maryland, extreme southern prince george's county, that is until 4:45. so just about another 25 minutes with that. inside the beltway, most of the action is south to old town alexandria and the gaylord resort. this

maryland that is going on for 20 minutes. we have the strongest winds. wind gusts to 60 earn many. waldorf on the western edge of this. you can tell that things are beginning to improve. you can see the green and the yellow. not the intense oranges and the reds over prince frederick and long beach. all of this is moving off toward the northeast at 40 miles per hour. the storms are impressive. keep in mind an airplane flies at the cruising altitude at 42,000 feet. tops of the storms over 50,000 feet. this is now by eagle harbor moving to prince frederick. the areas likely to see the hail once again. waldorf beginning to improve a little bit. stronger storms to the south and west of you. once you head further west it's beginning to improve in terms of not seeing the heavy rain.

take a look at what is going on thwart north, old town alexandria here. reagan national airport where they had a ground stop earlier to rosslyn right here to west end. this scattered showers at this time. in rosslyn we did see sunshine in the past hour. or the past 15 minutes, i should say. you don't have to head too far west to falls church. that is where they are looking at the heavier downpours now. you are not under severe thunderstorm warning it doesn't mean we are out of the woods for the heavy downpours with the winds and lightning. more storms around hagerstown area. winchester with heavy rain at this time. once again these have not been warned on. can't rule out they will produce gusty wind and lightning. flash flood warning from montgomery county and howard county until 8:00 tonight. anne arundel and prince george's county under flood warning moving through the evening hours. take you out for

last week. tell us what you are seeing today. richard: okay. we are seeing as you can see is a lot of towned trees. a tree down and another tree. was this straight line winds? we are not sure what we'll find here. we saw this large one here. boy, they blocked the whole road off because of the tree. we walk around and talk about the big reveal. we talk about the surprises in the story. the big reveal. there you go. a car crushed underneath there. we think we saw people inside the car. they were walking away and didn't want to talk to us. this is the thing you will see more and more.

the straight line winds. that have struck the trees here. difficult afternoon in bowie, maryland, many places in the area. back to you. jonathan: you hope the lighter limbs fell on the car. steve: exactly. looks like a nice car. we are looking at the thunderstorm warning, severe thunderstorm warning southern maryland. another one issued. this is for jefferson, frederick, clark and part of loudoun county that includes winchester area. this is until 5:15 with gusty winds moving toward the southeast at 25 miles per hour. if you are in winchester keep an eye to the sky and watch the storm moving across the area. further south to cambridge and waldorf, that is where we have the heaviest rain. severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 4:45. so another ten minutes to go on t

we have gusty winds if they don't extend it lodger. head to district, arlington, alexandria, light rain to moderate rain around colonial village to reagan national airport. a little further off toward the west around tysons corner to idylwood. looking at a small sub but nothing warned on. a new warning, this is the one i just talked about until 5:15. this includes barryville and millwood. this is moving 20 miles per hour south and east. winchester are now on the back edge of it. south of you is where we have the stronger activities right now. as of the latest sweep with the radar, berryville has the strongest tomorrows. i wouldn't be surprised if win chester in the next ten minutes you are canceled out of the severe thunderstorm warning. widen it out a bit to give you a bigger view. d.c., montgomery to frederick county. a storm is blossoms around the hagerstown area.

thunderstorm warning in southern tip of garrett county. extreme western maryland. that is well out. i'll end with prince frederick, long beach, mechanicsville under a severe thunderstorm warning for ten minutes. we keep you updated here on abc7. but first we head out to the front of the building in rosslyn to brian van de graaff. brian: we have been standing here for 45 minutes or so. we saw the sun come out. believe it or not there is a little bit of blue. pan between the buildings and there is blue to georgetown across the river. wi have a tropical downpour. there is rain with the big drops coming down here. we saw a big wave south and east. there have been intense report. i heard golfball size hail from bowie,

isolated areas. north and west for the remainer of the everything your. they are becoming more isolated but they can pack a punch. after all the heavy rain that pushed through here in the last hour or so calmed down the atmosphere somewhat as it is dropping across the area. bottom line is there is still a watch that runs until 9:00. even if you are not under active warning we could get the heavier tropical downpours. isolated flooding to keep an eye out floor. there is still wind and hail. keep us on the toes for a little longer, although i think the bigger overall threat is diminishing somewhat. we have straggleers to the north and west and want to keep a close eye on those and keep you posted in the afternoon. what was a sunny few moments here is now damp and unsettled. nothing severe in rosslyn. keep an eye on the apps as you can as well and bring you the latest from inside the studio and outside. that is the latest from street side. back to you. jonathan: coming down at a

jeff: hunter attended the potomac school in mclean from kindergarten to 12th grade and graduated in 2014. the school community mourning his loss. he was from mclean, just 20 years old. in between the sophomore and the junior year at syracuse university. he and a close friend from mclane had been attending the fire fly music festival in dover, delaware. on saturday not far from the festival, watson was in the passenger seat of the friend's jeep grand cherokee when the drive ran a stop sign and slammed in an oncoming pickup truck. he was killed on the scene. authority say everybody involved was wearing seat belts and alcohol does not appear to be a factor. hunter watson is remembered as a kind, sweet person with a fashion for music and family and friends. >> he has a special place in my heart

me. he knows i was there for him, too. we couldn't talk for a couple of months because we went to different schools. when we did talk it was like we hadn't been apart. >> in a statement the potomac school expressing sadness for hunter's death calling him bright, creative and charismatic and personable young man with a great sense of humor. we spoke briefly to the mother of the young man who survived the crash and he is in physically and emotionally great pain. as you imagine. he was also beloved at syracuse. we'll tell you how so in a half hour. alison: tragic. thank you. jonathan: we'll be right back. sir, this alien life form is growing at an alarming rate. growing fast, you say? we can't contain it any long... oh! you know, that reminds me of how geico's been

jonathan: police now say the two crashes on randolph road in colesville on friday are related. they happened less than a mile apart and within one minute of each other. when n the first wreck, police say hitchens flipped the car and was killed in the crash. a minute later barry crashed in a light pole at the corner of randolph and new hampshire avenue three. people ran off. he may have been connected with a crash days earlier
