seven guns, including an ar-type semiautomatic rifle and a shotgun, body armor, knives, 2,000 rounds of ammunition. even a military-grade helmet. >> we had the driver exit the vehicle, and when the driver got out, he noticed a .45-caliber handgun on the driver's seat that the driver was sitting on. >> reporter: but early fears of a terror connection gave way to something else. according to police, the three people in the truck said there's a reason for it all. they were on their way to rescue a 16-year-old girl from a new york drug den. it turns out the driver, john cramsey, just lost his 20-year-old daughter to a suspected heroin overdose, according to a medical examiner. cramsey, who owns a gun range in pennsylvania, alluded to his plans to rescue the 16-year-old on facebook, telling one of his friends, quote, "how about a road trip to new york to do an extraction? saving a 16-year-old girl is priceless."

other passengers have been charged with illegal gun possession. and in another bizarre twist, police say they found the girl cramsey was looking for, and she told them, "i don't need to be rescued." police are still investigating. gio benitez, abc news, new york. there is a 12-pound fugitive jumping around a massachusetts zoo this morning. dizzy, the monkey is on the run sort of at the forest park zoo in springfield. he escaped from his living area tuesday and has been swinging from a tree ever since. workers have tried to entice dizzy with food, but nope. he's not taking the bait. zoo officials say dizzy is not a danger to the public. looks like he's having a good time. >> he's having a fun time. >> he'll come down whether he he's hungry. it will take quite a few benjamins if you want to see "hamilton"ing in chicago. >> ticket sales began tuesday for the tony award winning musical. 1,000 people were waiting

♪ the tragic death of a rising hollywood star is giving new momentum to concern over a major vehicle recall. >> it has to do with one of america's most popular suvs and what many are calling a design flaw with a gear shift that could lead to deadly mistakes. here's abc's clayton sandell. >> may i have your attention please? >> reporr:

anton yelchin was pinned and killed by his own car, a 2015 jeep grand cherokee. but last summer, federal safety investigators began looking into complaints about the gear shifter in jeep grand cherokees, chrysler 300s and dodge chargers. by april of this year, chrysler issued a voluntary recall. reports of rollaway cars leading to 212 crashes and 41 injuries. but judy borlin says, a month later, she still didn't know about the recall, when her car that she thought was in park, rolled over her legs. that recall notice arrived a few days later. chrysler says the shifter did not fail, blaming the rollaways on drivers who didn't realize their cars weren't in park. the company is now offering a software fix and a new warning system for those recalled cars, but you'll notice, in the 2016 model, chrysler has gone back to a more traditional shifter design. >> bottom line is, what chrysler has to do is to fix it, fix it soon and get it right.

800,000 affected cars that need fixing. clayton sandell, abc news, denver. >> now, chrysler for its part insists that the shifter didn't actually fail. there was nothing wrong with it. they say it's the drivers using it that are making a mistake. >> so far the cause of the accident has -- or the cause of death has been officially ruled as an accident. >> right. of course, the critics out there are saying if the shifter's so confusing to so many people, then that sort of implies that there's a design flaw there. >> which is why there was that recall at the end. >> sources connected with the investigation are saying that the actor died very quickly within a minute they say. >> wow. so sad. coming up, getting out into the great outdoors. >> giz wiz dickey bartolo has summer's hottest outdoor gadgets?

>> reporter: dave ward's first day at ktrk was november 6th, 1966. a native of huntsville, he was the station's first reporter out on the streets, shooting his own film and putting together his own stories in the city he quickly came to call home. >> when i got a chance to move to houston, it was like moving back home. i love the city. i love the people in it. it's a big city. but it has a very neighborhood feel to it. >> reporter: in 1967 is, ward was promoted to anchor of the 7:00 a.m. newscast and host of dialing for dollars. by 1968, he was anchor of the 6:00 and 10:00 newscast and he's been at the anchor desk ever since. >> it makes me feel old and very fortunate to be able to stay in this business with one television station anchoring newscasts. >> and his fellow apollo 13 astronauts. >> reporter: among some of his favorite stories his coverage of the space program here in houston. >> really one of the reasons
