announcer: now "abc7 news at 4:00". on your side. >> my friends, my brother -- alison: right now at 4:00, a sit-in on the house floor over gun control. >> to make it real. we have to occupy the floor of the house until there is action. jonathan: that is congressman john lewis a civil rights leader pulling a page out of the movement. a literal sit-in going on, on the floor of the house. alison: house democrats urging a vote on gun control measures in the wake of the orlando attack. jonathan: moments after that, the house adjourned while democrats were still there sitting on the floor. cameras went dark. but those on the floor were told to turn the phones off. jeff goldberg is on the hill now with the latest on the movement. what's happening? jeff: jonathan, the sit-in is still going on. it has been going on now for four yeah hours. no signs of stopping at any point soon. house democrats still inside the chambers, sitting in. they

democrats including barbara mikulski of maryland and tim kaine of virginia. here now that the sit-in began forcing house republicans to gavel the house out of session. >> the chair would ask members to please leave the well so the house may proceed with business and decorum. to clause 12a of rule one the house stands in recess subject to the call of the chair. jeff: certainly a chaotic scene inside the house. certainly unexpected when this all began at 11:30 this morning. 60 house democrats sitting down on the house floor, purning for votes on gun control legislation. they have repeatedly been chanting "no bill, no break." many house members posting pictures on twitter and facebook with the same hashtag. the cameras have been shut down inside the chamber. house democrats are

control bills including legislation to prevent suspected terrorists from buying firearms, expanded background checks. some calling for vote eson assault weapons ban. many democrats are speaking in the chamber in the sit-in about the impact of gun violence in the home districts and calling for action. >> mr. speaker, i would ask that all of my colleagues join me on the floor. >> on occasion, mr. speaker, i have had what i call

for months, even for years, through several sessions of congress i wondered what would bring this body to take action? what would finally make congress do what is right, what is just, what the people of this country have been demanding and what is long overdue? >> upall the gun bills offered so far, none of them would have stopped the heinous situations that occurred. jeff: a powerful moment on the house floor with congressman john lewis leading the charge in the sit-in that is still going on now. the number of democrats in the house and the senate continuing to grow. we have even seen senate democrats bringing care packages of food and drinks inside to democratic members in the house. of course, this sit-in follows the fill buster in the senate

senate that happened last week. we're at four and a half hours of the sit-in. it's been going on and no sign of it stopping anymore? soon. live on capitol hill, jeff goldberg, abc7 news. jonathan: thanks. former house speaker dennis hastert reported to federal prison to serve 15 months after pleading guilty in the hush money case. he was accused of paying to cover up sexual abuse while he was a wrestling coach at an illinois high school. hastert arrived at the prison in a wheelchair in minnesota a couple of hours ago. alison: now we turn to breaking news out of the district today where the d.c. police are searching for a missing 9-year-old girl. her name is sophia proctor. she was last seen with her mother julia on 14th street northwest. this was yesterday afternoon. police believe she is still with her mother and they are looking for two of them. take another good look at the pictures that we have up here now. we have them posted as well on the facebook and twitter pages. jonathan: we are getting more breaking news right now in the newsroom from arlington where washington boulevard and the

down. police activity is going on out there. we are working to gather information on why they were called there and ultimately made the decision to block all traffic in the area. it comes at a bad time in the afternoon. we have more information as we get it. at 4:00, clean-up continues across maryland, virginia, d.c. from the severe storms we saw yesterday. alison: you will remember one warning after another coming in as the storms tore across the area. each one moving through. the damage soon became clear. flooding at a metro station. trees splitting homes. and slamming onto cars. thank you for staying with us for our extended storm coverage. jonathan: we'll begin with meteorologist steve rudin. more severe weather is coming our way. steve: we have to wait another 12 hours or so. no problems for this evening or for most of the overnight hours. if you are going out for a swim. temperatures around 85 degrees or so. added clouds move

it made it more scary. all you can hear is the glass shattering. >> this is hob road but more like a tornado alley. the utility crews are scrambling to make repairs. almost no one has electricity. for some it should have been worse. >> no one was hurt and no one died. no one had serious injuries. this is one of the power polls they are bringing in to replace the busted ones. i wish i could give you a sense of scale. how large this is. we are told this clearing down the road goes down for a mile. 2,100 people without power. reporting live, richard reeve, abc7 news. alison: a lot to clean up. thank you.

school board. sam: kevin done hue says it will cost -- donahue says it will cost millions of dollars. it used to be any lead level for 15 parts per billion is unacceptable for young. now any level one part per billion requires abatement. >> six of the sources had higher lead levels on the second test than the first. >> councilmembers heard the parents frustration with the lead testing program. many were from logan at the montessori. the parents are worried and they embrace the filter program. >> if they are on every source and replaced regularly this is a good first step. over time we know this is costly to replace lead pipes but as we remediate and modern size schools they should be replaced as well. >> anytime in the testing we see a result that is above th

question they are fake. >> we don't sell tide in 5-gallon buckets. lisa: they test the detergent. >> this is a chocolate stain. this is the same stain washed in water. this is washed in the counterfeit detergent. this is washed in the tide liquid. when you use the counterfeit detergent you can see that it's not that much different than just using water by itself. we found it had high water content. >> if you made just as much money selling counterfeit tide as heroin, what would you choose? the tide. you won't do 40 years in prison. lisa: in another raid at different address deepties seized $10,000 in cash, rifle and detergent. the counterfeit rings are difficult to stop and they go beyond the local level. some products coming to the u.s. from as far away as china. alison: wow!

all right, lisa. thank you. pro golfer rory mcilroy is saying he will not play in the summer olympics. the reason? zika. in a statement he said he is protecting not just his health but his family's health as well. he is not alone turning down the olympics. today arguably the most famous golfer tiger woods addressed the issue ahead of his tournament at congressional. >> it will be a spectacular event because it's the olympics. it would be better if we had more top heavy field. i understand that, i wish for me personally i wish they would have gone the top 50 guys in the world. alison: so there you have it. everybody is starting to weigh in. we have to see ahead of the olympics how this all plays out. jonathan: i guess you can't blame the athletes given the fact a lot of them aren't getting the signs

adding to the mess now on the inner loop past university boulevard the crash involving a motorcycle has a left lane blocked. this is all connected with those delays. that is all from the traffic center for now, though. back to you. jonathan: thank you very much. want you to look at something. check it out. infa red. these are the legs. the firefighter. for the first time in santa barbara county, firefighters are using infrared devices on their iphones to find hot spot. alison: amazing. you can see the outline of the firefighter there battling an out-of-control brush fire. as stephanie ramos reports the extreme heat is just one of the weather extremes hitting the country. stephanie: fire continues to scorch southern california. the twin l.a. area fires broke out monday charring a combined total of nearly 5,000 acres. they haven't merged but they are called the sam gibbry yell complex fire. >> we are short on resources because of the fire up north and fire down south but we are getting resources in as we spk.

stephanie: mandatory evacuations issued for 850 households with some folks being allowed to return today. relief is in sight. weather conditions may start to help firefighters as the coastal areas begin to cool the west. this is as severe weather breaks out in the eastern part of the country. in our nation's capitol, staffers at the rayburn congressional office building breaking out the mop soaking up what the severe storms left behind. flash flooding sending water gushing down an escalator at this metro station. a few miles away in maryland a tornado tearing almost 13-mile path tuesday. >> it was horrible. everything turns black. we turn the trees going left and right. stephanie: rough weather expected for east coast tomorrow. in california, cooler weather is heighting the firefighting efforts but the crews are expecting 20 to 25-mile-per-hour winds later tonight, which could stir up more flames. stephanie ramos, abc news, los angeles. jonathan: check this out. this is new video w

getting in the abc7 newsroom from yesterday's flooding of the metro station in cleveland park. it starts off slow and then picks up speed. first look inside. people are standing in the water. trains had to bypass the northwest washington red line stop while the crews made repairs to the escalator. i did dry out or in the process of doing that. metro tells abc7 there is no long-term damage done to the escalator. look at the guy standing to the left at the top of the escalator. wearing shorts. alison: on the escalator. jonathan: she is getting a selfie. alison: taking a lot of pictures. jonathan: everybody going about their business like no big deal. that is a big deal. a lot of water. alison: guy in the business suit going up the steps. steve: expensive shoes were ruined and suits for that matter. alison: what a mess! steve: there were reports of during that time period upward of four inches per hour fell. over a small area. i have never seen anything like that on the metro system and i have been here for 20 years.

crazy. alison: what about tomorrow? steve: the big storm a ways off. it's around the chicago area and beginning to develop. this is the storm that will slowly migrate or quickly migrate to the area heading through tomorrow morning. the movement from the storm may be as fast as 70 miles per hour. jonathan: wow! steve: once it gets cooking over illinois, indiana and ohio. it should settle down as it moves to our area. still looking at a lot of rain. for us, though, national harbor. what a difference 24 hours can make. we don't have the sunshine out there. at least it's dry. you can get out there and enjoy and take care of errands you have to run this afternoon and into the evening hours. the area in green is a flash flood watch that goes into effect later tonight and daytime hours tomorrow. we look at the heaviest rain around i-81 corridor during the next 24 hours or so. we will focus our attention to the west of us, around indiana. the strongest storms are set to develop moving

the storms will slowly advance east. the areas you that you see in red, we don't see it often. severe storms prediction system. that area is the likely to see the strongest storms. as we swing things over to our area until 8:00 tomorrow morning. we are under a slight risk for the d.c. metro area. adds -- as the storms move to our area. overnight low in the morning to 60's to lower 70's. grab an umbrella. pack your patience with you especially as we move through the early morning hours. heaviest storm moves south of us. yet another round of showers and thunderstorms likely to develop as we move through the afternoon hours. we will see things clear out of here. moving into the day on friday. better weather conditions for the upcoming weekend. for tomorrow, showers and thunderstorms. the next seven days

the #frozeneveryafterwaitlines got started with people there posting the times. today abc7 got in touch with some of the people on twitter in the lines. they weren't as long today. some say it took only three hours. jonathan: only. you could play a round of golf in the time it takes to get through the lines. we found out that the ride shut down at noon for a few hours but it is now back open. again, we have been asking you on our instapoll how long would you wait? i ask you, first, look at that. two hours. most people say they would go to two hours but four hours isn't going to happen. how long would you wait with your kids? alison: i don't know. little girls will watch "frozen" 800 times in a row. i'm sure waiting in line five hours is not a big deal. jonathan: half hour, hour? alison: you know how hot it is there? jonathan: humid, too. alison: uncomfortable. that is what you are there for, i guess, to see the smiles on the kids' faces. jonathan: after five hours the smile goes away. 15 minutes. pillsbury is giving us a way

announcer: you're watching "abc7 news at 4:00". on your side. jonathan: the landing of a medical rescue plane at the bottom of the world. antarctica was successful. a rare rescue missioned tried a couple of times before and now it's on the return trip home from the bottom of the world. rescue plane on its way to a medical facility facing a harrowing mission in the antarctic winter. 24-hour darkness and temperatures averaging high us - averaging minus 70 degrees. the plane made two landings after touching down at in the south pole to pick up two patients in desperate need of medical attention. the crew is on the way to touch down at the northern edge of the con innocent. a trip that takes a grueling nine to ten hours. >> a bit of daylight. definitely not the extreme temperatures and stuff. so, getting in there wil

little easier. of course, it is on the way home. i don't think there will be the same level of stress going to the pole. >> the dark is not the issue. it's about the cold and the weather. jonathan: two specialized twin otter turbo prop planes made the flight from the southern tip of chile crossing the atlantic to antarctica. one plane flies the final leg to the south pole. >> it's not ideal to be flying in the winter in antarctica. there is a reason we don't generally fly this time of year. jonathan: with careful monitoring every smile the plane is expected to land late this afternoon. >> on the way back with a good weather window. jonathan: once the medical and the flight crew are able to rest they will depart apt arkca for south -- antarctica for medical attention that couldn't be provided on the remote

jay: this is jay korff live in arlington, virginia, with breaking news. we gave you an update earlier on a traffic mess on washington boulevard route 27. we are south of 50, north of 395. i will pan off. you can see the police active it there rally. washington boulevard, washington 7 is shut down. off about a hundred yards on the other side of the road, you can barely see a station wagon blocked by the vehicle. that is the source of the investigation. we have been here for ten to 15 minutes to see what is going on. at this point, arlington county police have not released anything officially. we know that the spokesperson is being rebriefed. we expect an update shortly. we know at some point the authorities stopped the vehicle. and a tremendous amount of police presence came in the area. there is ambulances, t
