this morning on "world news now," a dramatic night on capitol hill. >> democrats in the house are holding a sit-in demanding action on gun control in the wake of the orlando nightclub attack. their marathon session has already led to shouting matches with republicans. the demonstrations are even spilling outside. we'll have the latest just ahead. happening now, severe storms across the midwest, tornados on the ground in illinois. lightning and heavy rain forcing soccer fans in chicago to take shelter. at soldier field as the west still grapples with wildfires and the dry conditions fueling the flames. there are new developments from antarctic in the rescue of stranded workers in need of medical condition. we'll tell you the status of the mission and the obstacles facing the kret right now.

congress man june lewis. democrats brought blankets and pillows overnight to the house floor. some senators joining this em in solidarity and they turned to facebook and periscope to send out life images when republicans shut down c-span's cameras. >> lawmakers waived pieces of papers with the names of victims of gun silence. they sang we shall overcome and chantded no bill, no break and shouted down paul ryan when he called a vote on two bills not related to gun control. >> where is the heart of this body? where is our soul? where is our moral leadership? where is our courage? >> and ryan dismissed the sit-in as a publicity stunt as democrats dig in, gun control supporters are gathering outside. the crowd also saying we shall overcome led my nancy pelosi. >> our other top story this morning, the extreme weather taking aim at the midwest right now. reports of at least 159 tornadoes overnight i

we're hearing of homes and buildings damaged in lasalle county. there are power outages, flash flooding, hundreds of canceled flights throughout the area, as well. >> this is a scene at chicago's soldier field during halftime of the copa america match between chile and colombia. fans were told to run for cover because of the dangerous weather moving in. thunder and lightning roared overhead while rain swamped the stands delay ath match nearly two hours. abc's alex perez has more where the extreme weather is heading. >> reporter: a long night of severe storms. for tens of millions in the mid wrest this, after a scary 24 hours in the east. winds gusting above 80 miles an hour in south jersey, ripping off roofs and flipping over planes. fore.een anything like this >> reporter: in maryland, a tornado tearing an almost 13-mile path across howard county. >> you're going to see a very clear lin

hundreds of people who were evacuated are now back at home. you can see how quickly the situation is changing. > very dangerous. they need to be careful out there. a flight makes an emergency landing while being escorted by two f-16s. the delta air lines flight to los angeles was diverted to tucson, arizona, after a passenger allegedly threatened the flight crew. a passenger recorded the man being removed from the plane by the authorities. now police say there was no threat to public safety. and polls are now open in britain whether to withdraw from the eu. opinion polls show the vote too close to call with a record number of citizens registering to vote in the referendum. opponents of the exit called the brexit say it would be a mistake to leave the largest single market in the world. those calling for withdrawal say the eu is dysfunctional. britain is a major portal for u.s. trade in europe and the vote is likely to have a big effect on financial markets. >> to presidential politics and donald trump

blistering attack on hillary clinton. he delivered a fairly subdued but scathing speech using a teleprompter. he bashed clinton over her record and her character and accuses her of lies as well as corruption. more now from abc's tom llamas. >> she's a world class liar. >> reporter: donald trump, back in the ring, delivering a scathing speech against hillary clinton. >> her decisions spread death, destruction and terrorism everywhere she touched. >> reporter: trump, trying to make the case clinton cares more about dollars than diplomacy. >> she ran the state department like her own personal hedge fund. >> reporter: in his address, the presumptive nominee mixed fact with fiction. on benghazi. >> our late ambassador, chris stevens, he was left helpless to die as hillary clinton soundly slept this her bed. >> reporter: our fact check shows this claim is false. the defense department's own timeline shows the attack started at 3:42 p.m. eastern, not in the middle of the night. clin

new e-mails reveal the state department staffers disabled security features on the server which was later breached. breaking overnight, louisiana deputy schaefer is dead after being shot in a new orleans suburb. it happened when david mitchell stopped a man for questioning investigators. say the suspect grabbed deputy michele's gun, the 19-year-old allegedly shot the officer three times in the back. police gave chase and arrested him in a nearby backyard. rapper troy av is pleating not guilty to attempted murder as well as other charges. investigatesers say this video shows him firing a gun during a deadly brawl at a t.i. concert last month. but rowling collins was also wounded by another shooter. his attorney says the wrap rapper is a victim, no the a criminal. the largest health care fraud take-down ever. the justice department has arrested more than 300 people
