500 people stranded overnight in a shopping mall after a bridge nearby just washed out. there are stories of people that had to be air lifted off the roof of their home and many others rescued after being trapped in their cars. the death toll. it's now risen to 14. >> as far as i know, of course you can see they are bringing bg in the swift water rescue. i can't get home. i live on river side. i'm stuck. i can't get in or out. >> we had a flood in 2003. it's nothing like this. horace: wow, the pictures are unbelievable. the governor declared a state of emergency for most of the state. national guard has been deployed. the eastern panhandle of west virginia the closest part to us in d.c. did not suffer any of the flooding but the residents there are now gathering supplies to send to the southern part of

state. leon: thank you. the coverage of the catastrophe in west virginia continues at 5:135. we will get a live report ahead. alison: a massive wildfire out in california is now covering an area of more than 29 square miles. that fire about 35 miles northeast of bakersfield has destroyed 100 buildings including 80 homes. another 1,500 buildings are threatened. hundreds of people have been evacuated and are waiting to find out if they still have homes to return to. >> it's hard. the kids are scared. we have to maintain calm for them. >> i have to stay inside. the sky was orange. i have asthma. >> about 600 firefighters are battling the blaze and hundreds more are on the way. alison: we are on storm watch here as some people may see rain this evening. meteorologist steve rudin has details. steve: and a few showers and

the sentence in court and john geer's mother expressed her sadness and anger. >> this guy was mad at his wife. jeff: evidence reveal that would torres, a former fairfax county police officer had been fighting with his wife before firing one fatal shot at geer during a standoff at geer's springfield town home in august 2013. geer was unarmed. his arms hanging in the doorway. right before torres was to go on trial for second-degree murder in april, attorneys reached a deal for a guilty plea of involuntary manslaughter and sentence of 12 months in jail. >> one year in jail? is insulting. it was murder. >> because he has spent ten months in jail for good behavior he is set to be a free man next wednesday. >> made a decision that was difficult and a p

officer who filed a fatal shot. leon: now turn to an update of arlington where police arrested this man. this is in connection to a sex assault over the weekend. people say he entered the woman's apartment near fourth street north and threatened her with a weapon. as he sexually salted her -- sexually assaulted her. the woman was able to break free and lock herself in a bathroom and yell for help. anibal castellanos was arresting on burglary and rape charges. still ahead at 5:00 on abc7 -- the right man at the right place at the right time. the unique life experience that made the electrical worker a perfect person to save a life. alison: and the local county plan to reduce animal population stirs outrage. how montgomery county plans to deal with geese. leon: president manassas makes history again. the measure he signed that

the good news is it will dry out over the weekend but it's here is devastation. i will get out of the way to see what you see behind me. this has gone done cig can'tly in the last 15 minutes. people in west virginia is used to flooding. we have mountains and hills and it comes with the territory but nobody we spoke with has seen this. you saw jaw dropping picture of mobile home. there is a 4-year-old boy in the backyard swept away to swollen creek. the body recovered this morning. woman's body in her car. the water rise something far they couldn't get out of the area. and the death toll is 15 but is sure

jon tonight in 7 salutes we recognize not one person but a group. more like a team. recently i was invited to play in a softball game with a group of veterans. a special group of men and women who have given so much to our country and they continue to give. they do it in a powerful way. ♪ ♪ jonathan: it looks like a normal softball game. but look closer. it's not. every member of one team has lost an arm or a leg. >> trying to tell you about our team. when we first started, this was about giving back to each other. we came from the combat field. we were broken, bloodied. we had to put ourselves back together again. jonathan: members of the wounded warrior amputee softball team. >> i lost my right foot to a mine in afghanistan. >> second rock went through the drive's side and took my drive's leg off, through my weapon and out the door. jonathan: for every

story about overcoming tremendous odds. on this night they invited members of the media including channel 7 to a game. i quickly learned how good they are. we lost. but the real winners are the kids watching their heroes. look closely. many of the kids were born without a limb or they lost one. >> we are showing the kids life without a limb is limitless. that is what we are here for. jonathan: the warriors put on a catch every year for all over the country. kids just like them. >> before i couldn't bike. i wanted to. i couldn't get my balance and i would fall a lot. so we started to do stuff. >> working with the military guys? >> mm-hmm. >> now you can bike? >> yeah. >> now you can play baseball? >> yeah. >> there is nothing you can't do. >> not really. jonathan: his n

leon: one "7 on your side" viewer got stuck when he purchased one of walk-in tubs? that is when the call went out to "7 on your side" troubleshooter horace holmes for help. horace: gerrard meyers is in great shape. >> i'll be 91. >> his wife of 61 years is doing well also but she has a

and out of a conventional bathtub. they saw an ad about a tub that could solve all of their problems. >> the tub opened. like this. horace: a walk-in tub. they bought one from america's walk-in tubs, new jersey. after they installed it -- >> once the water is in there, then you can't open the door until it's all drained out. >> there was a problem the first time she took a bath. >> it wasn't draining. >> it wasn't draining. horace: so you called your husband? >> yeah. i had to call someone. bailed out water so she could get out. the water didn't drain. the pipes from the tub didn't fit pipes on the home properly. a warranty came with the tub so they called america's walk-in tubs. >> they said get a local plumber. so i did. horace: meyers said america's walk-in told them he would be reimbursed. >> i spent $1300 for corrective stuff on the tub. i sent them the bill. they still haven't paid. horace: the

calling. >> i have been after these people since october. now if i call, i don't get anybody. >> then meyers contacted "7 on your side" and we called the company. it turns out america's walk-in tub of new jersey went belly up, shut its doors in april. but another company purchased the america's walk-in tubs name and web address. so the name america's walk-in tub still exists even though it is owned by another company. when "7 on your side" contacted that other company, a spokesperson told us even though it is called "america's walk-in tubs" it's not honoring the contracts from the company that was previously called "america's walk-in tubs." so the meyers and any other dissatisfied customers like them are out of luck. in the meyers' case they are out $1,300. at least the tub works. now. leon: well, we contacted the bert business bureau to find out if there is anything that customers can do when the

product from goes out of business or is sold and the b.b.b. told us even though the product came with a warranty, the company that purchased just the name has no responsibility to honor any old contracts or warranties. alison: okay. well, let's go ahead and get a check on the roadways on friday. jamie sullivan is here. hey, jamie. jamie: an accident we are starting off with on the outer loop of capital beltway. getting to virginia, passing by 66. this is near gallows road. be careful passing by because we have a lane blocked and there is an injury. we may start the see emergency crews roll up on scene. if you are traveling outbound on 66, it's not a terrible ride. the heaviest area through fairfax. you get a good idea. a lot of volume. nothing that is slow because of any accidents or any big issues. talk about what we are seeing along the beltway. this is near old dominion. it's still slow. we are recovering from an accident that happened at the start of the afternoon rush on the inner loop near river road.

still eight-mile backup north from tysons continuing closer to bethesda getting to the 270 spur. 270 is not bad at all heading north through rockville and gaithersburg. closer to clarksburg. we still have volume to see here near 121. the roads are still damp. we have rain come through here earlier. yes we are still seeing damp roads. it's not affecting us. just damp. steve: good news there. we are looking at a few showers and thunderstorms out there now. but good news as we move into this hour. we are looking at the active severe thunderstorm warnings that have canceled out. you can see d.c., the center of the screen. a few showers moving overhead. the bigger problem is off to the west of us where they had severe thunderstorm warnings over the last hour or so. those are now canceled out and replaced with a flash flood warning. this is for rocking ham county until 8:45 tonight. it include broadway. that is because the heavier rain north of you will likely cause flash flooding. here is the evening planner as we head through the next 12
