good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm rebecca jarvis. doctors provide us knowledge and comfort sometimes at our darkest moments. the relationship we have is often built on trust and respect. tonight we learn how that trust has been violated. a new investigation revealing thousands of cases of sexual abuse by doctors. it's a shocking tale on par with some of the most infamous abuse scandals in our nation's history. here's abc's chief investigative correspondent brian ross. >> reporter: it happened in a hospital room after minor surgery as she regained consciousness and her doctor leaned over. >> i remember him kissing me on the lips. and then manipulating, physically manipulating, my hand to basically rub him, first through his scrubs, but i do believe there was then

and he told me at that time, when i was very hazy, he said, "it's okay, this is just how we wake you up." >> reporter: erin vance of oregon is one of the thousands of women in this country who have been sexually abused by their doctors. now coming forward to speak about what has been largely unspoken. >> i was completely at the actual mercy of whoever was there. and it turned out that the person who was there was a serial predator doing this to countless other women. >> reporter: her doctor, the anesthesiologist. dr. frederick field was sentenced to 23 years in prison for assaults on at least 12 women. >> i keep going back to, do no harm. aspect of the hippocratic

country, in hospitals and doctors' offices in every state, that oath is being violated. and only now is the scale of the problem becoming known. >> it's treated with a sort of secrecy that we don't see in other arenas when we're talking about allegations this serious. >> reporter: for the last year an investigative team at the "atlanta journal-constitution" -- >> the investigator will tell the victim, you should file. >> reporter: has been working to remove the veil of secrecy around the medical profession. >> it's never been widely acknowledged as a significant problem. >> reporter: the paper's investigation unfolded much like that of the "boston globe" highlighted in the movie "spotlight" as it uncovered widespread sexual abuse by catholic priests and efforts by the church to cover it up. >> show me the church manipulated the system so these guys wouldn't have to face charges. show me they put those same priests back into parishes time and time again. show me that this was systemic, that it came from theop

"atlanta journal-constitution" put together a first of its kind compendium of 2,400 documented cases over the last 16 years of doctors who have sexually abused their patients. and more than half were able to keep their licenses to practice. kerry teagarden was the lead reporter. >> some of these doctors are the most prolific sex offenders in the country, with hundreds, in some cases thousands, of victims. >> reporter: many of those accused have gained nationwide prominence. at mt. sinai hospital in new york city, dr. david newman was head of clinical research in the prestigious hospital's emergency room, lecturing other doctors on ethics and openness in doctor/patient relationships, as in this address at university of virginia. >> people believe in us, they have faith in us, it's almost religious. we need to use that privilege in the way that will better their care. >> reporter: but now dr. newman is accused of violating tha

under criminal indictment for the sexual abuse of four women, including one he allegedly drugged in the e.r. newman has pleaded not guilty. do you have anything to say to the people who havelleged you abused them? >> we have no comment right now. >> reporter: newman's license has been suspended and he no longer works at this hospital. unlike his case, prosecutors say patients who have become victims are often hesitant to file complaints against doctors. >> i felt ashamed. i took it on myself initially. and said, no, it just had to be a dream. i felt like people wouldn't believe me. you know? i mean, for the same reasons that i didn't believe that it could happen, i thought, well, who would believe that? >> reporter: michael hestren is district attorney in riverside county, california. >> it's very common that sivicts will appear to tolerate this behavior for a longer period of

basic trust of these doctors. >> reporter: his office is prosecuting this ear, nose and throat doctor, john mcguire, charged with 26 counts of sexual abuse of his patients. >> deny any and all allegations -- >> reporter: according to court documents in a civil lawsuit, mcguire claimed he was examining one female patient as he "reached into the collar of plaintiff's shirt, palpated her breasts and touched her nipples with an ungloved hand." another patient claims mcguire had to inspect "a rash near her vagina." mcguire proceeded to examine and inspect plaintiff's pelvic area and parted her labia with ungloved finger." he's being held on $3 million bond. >> the allegations are deadly serious, that this individual really was preying upon victims, and one of our main goals was to make sure there were no more victims. >> reporter: many doctors get off easy, including the one who lives in this house

california. dr. david mata, once playsed in congress, pleaded guilty in 2011 to six felony counts of sexual acts with patients but received only probation, no prison. when we went to see dr. mata, he refused to show his face. but maintained his innocence. >> did you abuse your patients? >> no, no. >> you deny that? >> i have to -- i'm not going to make any comment because you twist things -- >> i'm not going to twist things. you're hiding behind a door. i want to ask you, did you violate your oath? did you violate those patients? >> i'm going to make no comment on that. >> reporter: from the time of his arrest it took the california medical board three years to revoke dr. mata's license and he's now eligible to reapply for it, although he says he has retired. >> we found that there is a desire to try to return doctors to practice if we can. doctors are needed. you know, it costs a lot of money to

so there's a sense that we want to try to rehabilitate them if possible. >> even after'ses th allegation are substantiated? >> correct. those who are in charge of licensing physicians have a belief that they can be safely returned to exam rooms. >> doctors are about healing and helping and he did the exact opposite. time and again. >> reporter: in dr. mata's case, he had little to say to his victims. >> do you offer apology to your patients? >> i'm -- i -- i empathize with everyone -- >> do you offer an apology to those patients who you are pleading guilty to abusing? >> i don't know what to say, sir. >> reporter: for "nightline," brian ross, abc news, hemmit, california. up next, he's known as the

carlson. abc's ryan smith has the details of the new lawsuit and the response from fox chairman roger ailes. >> miss america is gretchen carlson! >> reporter: she was a former miss america turned fox news anchor with her own successful show. >> hi, everyone, welcome to "the real story." >> reporter: tonight gretchen carlson suing her former boss, ceo roger ailes, for sexual harassment days after her contract wasn't renewed. alleging he ended her fox news career after she rebuffed his sexual advances. the lawsuit claiming ailes repeatedly injected sexual or sexist comments into their conversations. allegedly ogling her in his office. commenting on her figure, saying when she complained about his severe and pervasive sexual harassment, he told her, i think you and i should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago, and then you'd be good and better and i'd be good and better.
