>> reporter: it is the most rigorous training in the u.s. military. but according to the medical examiner, this time it went too far. surveillance video from the combat swimming exercise reportedly shows 21-year-old james derek lovelace struggling in the pool. witnesses say his face was purple. his lips blue when against regulations an instructor dunks him not once but at least twice. lovelace's head disappearing under the water multiple times before the instructor pulls him out still breathing but moments later unresponsive. the death ruled a homicide. but that doesn't necessarily mean a crime has been committed. just that lovelace's death was, quote, at the hands of another. the instructor has been placed on administrative duty. s.e.a.
