people, especially white officers. marci: officers risking their lives to save others. this video showing one final act of bravery, taking on one of the shooters before he is killed. among the victims, 43 rural transit officer rich thompson, who got married -- 43-year-old transit officer brent thompson, who got married two weeks ago. >> we are heartbroken. there are no words to describe the atrocities that occurred to our city. all i know is that this must stop. marci: after a standoff, police killed in one of the gunmen, micah johnson. one of the suspects telling police he left bombs all over the area. investigators say they found nothing so far, but much of downtown is still blocked off as they search. marci gonzalez, abc news, dallas.

it is prompting changes at police department around the nation. suzanne kennedy spoke with the d.c. police chief and joins us now from the officers memorial with more. suzanne: good afternoon, jummy. people are leaving flowers and notes, signifying that they are with dallas. this is just a heartbreaking day for law enforcement across the country. overnight, a mandate from d.c. police chief. all officers will double up in squad cars for safety, the measure staying in place indefinitely. the chief saying in an early morning press conference that security is being stepped up at all d.c. police facilities. >> our hearts go

i cannot imagine what it must be like for them today, but we have got a lot of protest coming here in the next few days, and we have got to come to work and do our job. suzanne: what happened in dallas is a terror attack against law enforcement. >> this is an assassination against individuals who took an oath to protect our communities. suzanne: deandre moore as part of the black lives matter movement. he says responding to violence with violence is not the answer. not all policemen and women are racist. some of them want to protect each other. suzanne: there are 20,000 names

clinton's first event alongside vice president joe biden. on facebook, she wrote "i mourn for the officers shot while doing their sacred duty -- peacefuleople protesters, for their families, and for all who serve with them." "this senseless, tragic death of two motorists in minnesota reminds us how much needs to be done." the black caucus placed the blame of last night's shooting on the lack of gun reform. leaders demanded congress to get military rifles off the streets. >> we are asking the people of the house, we are asking majority leaders to now realize that an ar-15 does not discriminate. heart andtself in the

caucus members also called on nonviolence to bring the community together and says police officers need to be offered better training. abc 7 is continuing to monitor the information coming from dallas as well as the two deadly shootings earlier this week. we will bring you updates as we learn them right here on abc 7 and online at wjla.com. down at the capitol, things are much, right now, but there was a brief state of panic this morning after there were reports of a woman attending to enter the building with a gun. capito wasl on lockdown but was given the all clear within hours. it turned out to be false. some thought it might be another reaction to the shootings this week but say they are confident our country can move past this. >> i hope very soon we can put some of these divisions behind us. as i said, war

that, and our country is better than not, so let's pray that cooler heads prevail and we can go back on the people's business without personal fears. jummy: the false alarm was caused because something in a woman's bag looks like a gun but was not. storm watche are on as we face another dangerously hot stay in the nation's capital. chief meteorologist doug hill is tracking it for us. doug: this is a day four of our high humidity and heat. 89 degrees, but it feels like it is 96. that has been the story all morning long with heat index and feels-like temperature's climbing to 100 degrees or possibly a bit higher. frederick, 96 is the feels-like inperature, 94 fredericksburg, 94 cross the river, and 93 degrees in the suburbs outside of annapolis. we will keep our

and storms. there could be a few, but it is not shaking up right now. what we have right now is an area of showers developing north of hagerstown and southern pennsylvania. we think over the next few hours with the heat, humidity, and sunshine in our area, a little atmospheric disturbance moving through, we have a chance of firing of a few isolated thunderstorms in the mid to late afternoon, and they will continue basically moving west to east. they will have the ability to produce tremendous downpours, hail.wind, and even small no major storms moving through, but something to keep an eye on. by 6:00 tonight, the atmosphere should settle down. forecast for the afternoon, hot, humid, temperatures in the mid-90's with heat index l use, feels like temperatures close to 100, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. clearing skies tonight, but it will remain a very muggy.

castile in minnesota. we have opened a civil rights investigation in louisiana and are providing assistance to authorities in minnesota who are leading the investigation there. today, we are feeling the devastating loss of dallas area rapid transit officer brent thompson and for other fallen officers whose names remain unreleased as we await notification to all of the families. after the events of this week on americans across our country are feeling a sense of helplessness, fear.ertainty, and of these feelings are understandable, and they are justified, but the answer must not be violence. the answer is never violence. rather, the answer, our answer, all of our answers must be action. peaceful, collaborative, and determined action. we must continue working to build trust between communities and law

guarantee every person in this country equal justice under the law. and we must take a hard look at the ease of which wrongdoers can get their hands on deadly weapons and the frequency with which they use them. and we must reflect on the kind of country that we want to build and the kind of society that we are choosing to pass on to our children. and above all, we must reject the easy impulses of rancor and embrace the difficulty of work, but the important, vital work of finding a path forward together. above everything, we must remind ourselves that we are all americans, and that as americans, we share not just a common land but a common life. not just common goals but a common heart and soul. those we have lost this week have come from different backgrounds, different neighborhoods, but today they are mourned

er violence, the answer must be called, peaceful action. switching gears, daylight is giving extensive look after damage in eureka, kansas. it left a nursing home in ruins. despite the damage, no reports of any injuries. much of that is attributed to tornado warnings issued 15 minutes before the twister struck. check of, let's get a our local forecast. we might have some storms this afternoon, doug. ahead as you head out side. get in the shade as much as you can, hydrate. remember, we have some relief coming around the corner. 90 degrees now at reagan national airport. very light southeasterly breeze, dew point at 71, said that tells us it is oh presently humid. it feels like it is 96 degrees because of the added humidity. doppler radar, over the past 15 minutes, we have seen a couple .f areas start to pop up one in frederick county, western carroll county area. you see them here and there. lighter storms farther north in pennsylvania. a little push from the west and a couple little disturbances. we do have the possibility of picking up showers and thunderstorms starting to pop through the afternoon, developing to the west, moving east, some developing more locally, but eventually everything does move off to the east they are this evening. the chance of showers and storms diminish noticeably after 6:00 or so. we have another chance of show

or storms with that front, but it is a good one really because drier air will arrive tomorrow afternoon, and then cooler air will arrive here on sunday. with that in mind, we will pass along this note from the storm addiction center, the folks who issue your thunderstorm watches, tornado watches. they put us under a slight risk of isolated severe storms. we will keep an i on that. another hot and humid day, highs of 95, but because of moisture in the air, the heat index -- we call it feels-like temperature -- 98 to 102 degrees. we expect a few storms to develop, and a few of those can be heavy and not out of the question for an isolated severe thunderstorm as well. fireworks could actually be tonight at 9:30. by then, the rain threat will be out of here. we should be pretty good. partly cloudy skies. one more really hot day, 95, muggy
