investigation. tim barber joins us with the questions being asked. tim? tim: during those two hours, this is what you would hear -- [busy signal] busy signal, and now county officials want to know why. this is the sight and sound that you normally want to hear after calling 911. [sirens] two hours sunday and i, montgomery county's backup 911 system failed. during the time, fire rescue responded to two emergency calls. tonight, the county executive launched an investigation into why the backup 911 system failed and if it played a role in the deaths of two people. was the backup system tested before you ran it? >> it had been tested off and on, but it had not been used. .

the backup 911 system had been online for three weeks while the main system got upgrades. they believe that the backup system failed when an air-conditioning system failed, which caused the system to shut down before it overheated. >> they need more redundancy than that. tim: during the failure, they urged residents to call 311 weather local police station, which is also what they want you to do if it happens again. >> as long as they are doing something about it. the main call center is expected to be back online in the next few weeks. we will let you know when that happens and when the investigation is complete. live in montgomery county, tim barber, abc 7 news. :00, protesters11 on the streets of atlanta. this is for the fifth night in a row. this time ending with several

people at about 8:00 30 tonight, but no word on what they may be charged with. protesters made their way to the governor's mansion tonight. they are upset about the deadly police-involved shootings that killed two black men in minnesota and louisiana last week. and tonight a focus on healing after one protest turned tragic in dallas. five officers lost their lives last thursday, as you know, when the gunman and with a vengeance targeted them at a peaceful protest. nation's coming together to honor their memories. they vigil was held at dallas city hall tonight, put on by the dallas police association. were tears and hugs by candlelight as the community comes to grips with the heartbreak. jay korff has tonight's events. jay: alison, the dallas strong candlelight vigil was held in the city. police officials and fellow officers talked

the gun man behind the massacre that killed five police officers. investigators are saying that micah johnson's rampage could have been much worse. they say that johnson sang and laughed at the responding officers and even threatened to use explosives. investigators sifting through 170 hours of body camera footage from thursday's ambush and saying for the first time we have heard from the parents of the killer. his mother said at one time that her son wanted to be a police officer. his father is in shock. >> i didn't see it coming. with all my heart, i hate what he did. alison: the first funeral for a followed officer is wednesday. one week of unnerving violence has left people soul-searching across the country. the dallas shooting happened at a protest over police brutality. tonight, our top

talk about law enforcement and the community and how to improve their relationship stop roz plater tells us what they discussed. >> we know what the problems are. we are talking about solutions. roz: with that, w pgc radio turned down the music and dialed up the conversation on how to fix the sometimes troubling relationships between the police and black community. after a violent week nationwide, d.c.'s mayor is looking for ways to cut down on the number of traffic stops. mayor bowser: we want to get rid of the pre-textual stops. roz: traffic stops nationwide that have sometimes turned deadly. weighsked the panel to him on what young black men need to do to survive. prince george's county police chief says primarily it's about tone. >> a responsible interaction is always appreciated by both parties. roz: but community activist say that this not always work. >>

health alert tonight. we have spent months doing reports about opioid abuse. there is a new study that reveals the risk of chronic opioid abuse, with the 11 most common surgeries. surgery andknee gallbladder surgery. the results of an increased risk among women after c-sections. abuse risk was 20% higher for women than those who do not undergo the surgery. the study was published in the journal of american medicine. metro's safe track program is about to enter a new phase. tomorrow is the start of surge four, which means no trains running between reagan national airport and pentagon city. the blue and yellow lines can expect longer wait times. surge four will run through next monday. you can always get commute updates right to your phone. just signed up for
