symbol of a nation wounded and divided in the aftermath of a week of violence. in minnesota, a funeral for philando castile. he is the man a police officer shot to death last week and whose final moments played out via facebook. his girlfriend says castile told the officer he had a concealed weapon and was killed when he reached for his wallet. meanwhile, in dallas, police sergeant michael smith was laid to rest. the fourth officer of five killed in a shooting free by a man who said he wanted to kill white police officers. those deadly incidents prompted a national town hall with president obama. d.c. bureau chief sam ford joins us from outside the studio theater in northwest washington where the town hall is being held. sam? zach this was a busy block at 14th much of the day. the crews are sort of putting things away. wrapping

maureen: new tonight, the university of maryland police chief says he is embarrassed by the way his officers responded to this party in may. the response ended with students pepper spray and allegation of police brutality. maryland bureau chief brad bell had a chance to see the response from the officer's point of view. here is what he found. brad: the may 21 incident caused outrage across campus. university of maryland graduates ordered to break up a peaceful party for no reason. screamed at. pepper sprayed. shoved by campus police. >> i felt like they didn't have to respond like that. brad: now the university of maryland chief of police saying she is right. it was his own officers who are mostly at fault. >> i'm terribly embarrassed and humiliated by the actions of our officers. brad: chief david mitchell planned to

video today but at the request of the students, it was held. this varies from the cell phone clip except it shows officer touched off the disturbance by screaming at a woman who answers his knock at her door. >> the one officer in particular has been suspended without pay for 80 hours. brad: place saying a 911 call about the fight at the party was bogus by people who were turned away. they are charged with filing a false report. the chief says the officers should have left after finding it was a peaceful party. >> we don't often get it wrong. we did here. >> if it's a fireable offense he needs to be fired. brad: chief mitchell says it's possible more discipline will be handed out. he said what happened here is a failure of leadership. at the university of maryland, a
