were people i gathered to watch fireworks. moments later, they were running for their lives. leon: jay korff has the latest. jay: french president francis holland believes the truck attack was an act of terror, though no group has taken responsibility yet. said they will be stronger than the fanatics. the picturesque promenade in nice turned into a savage scene of horror. people walking home from a fireworks display thursday night. witnesses say the driver of this white truck used his vehicle as a killing machine, striking and killing dozens. one woman described the driver as maneuvering the truck to mow down the maximum amount of people. >> we did not know what was going on. this was the time

panel truck was going right across the area in front of us. peragging, 25, 30 miles hour, and it did so, just mowing through. the police say the driver was firing at the crowd from his truck. >> i saw a big white truck going through the pedestrians. the roads were blocked so cars could not go through. then more gunfire in shooting and running. jay: the police shot and killed the driver. the police also say they found weapons and grenades inside the truck. officials placed this french riviera city on block down the mid-antiterrorism protocols, but nobody has claimed responsibility. multiple french news agencies say the driver was in his 30's from nice.

have not heard from. president obama said he condemned the attack and stands in solidarity with the french people. jay korff, abc 7 news. alison: closer to home, breaking news from baltimore, where the police are at the scene of an officer-involved shooting on the west side of town. our sister station is reporting at least one man had an assault rifle and shot at the police. the windowhattered of the cruiser but the officers were not injured. we are expecting a news conference soon and we will bring you those updates. and breaking news and fairfax county, where there is an active search for a lost swimmer in lake barcroft along columbia pike in falls church. no word on the circumstances that led to the disappearance. officials have not yet released the name of the swimmer. 7 andstay with abc

administration is troubling. as of today, there have been a efects and,24 dwefects hundreds of those issue still need to be addressed. jay: the federal transit agency took over safety oversight of metro in 2015. there have been more than 1100 defects found. hundreds of those defects have not been fixed. is fta says that a defect defined as a violation of metro's own safety standards. they range in seriousness, but some problems could have led to derailment if not remedied. a spokesperson insists many major safety issues were addressed immediately. theples of defects include fact that rail ties, missing track fasteners, and various safety concerns related to the movement of trains. >>

are taking steps to address it. i'm surprised it has taken this long. jay: federal inspectors found more than 100 issues during the stages of safe track, designed to improve safety and reliability. noted 15 time since october, metro employees refused to allow federal inspectors to enter a train or the operation center so they could conduct an inspection. after informing the metro general manager of this problem, that issue has been resolved. jay korff, abc 7 news. and now following up on concerns we first raised right here on abc 7 last night. a six-week-old infant believed to be in danger last night, but several local communities never got the amber alert. it turns out it was because of human error. a virginia state police sergeant mistakenly left alexandria and arlington off the

notification list. the authorities say it was a clerical oversight and has been remedied. the child was found. her mother was taken into custody. leon: now the campaign trail and a vice presidential selection. sources tell abc news donald trump has selected indiana governor mike pence as his running mate. aboutow some fast facts tense. he was in his first term as indiana's governor. he spent 12 years in congress and is well-liked by social conservatives. in march he sighed one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country. donald trump is supposed to make the official announcement tomorrow at 11 a.m., but he delayed the announcement because of the attacks in france. we will learn more about pence in the next week. we will not know hillary clinton's vice pressured and joe pick until late next week, but today she

someone considered to be on her short list with virginia senator tim kaine in annandale today. issues of race and policing front and center during a town hall meeting hosted by president obama that air tonight during prime time right here on abc 7. president obama heard concerns from people who said they had and profiled by the police also police officials and elected leaders who want to help ensure officer safety. the president said he was pleased to see so many people from different backgrounds willing to sit down and talk about the issues. if we can just: acknowledge this is not just a matter of us versus them but a matter of all of us together as americans working to solve this problem, then i think we will solve it. alison: president obama said community policing and training officers to deescalate conflict will help relations, but noted that cities will have to find

leon: one week after a fire at a steakhouse in alexandria's del ray neighborhood, residents stepped in. but i, the del ray business sociation hosted a fundraiser for the owners -- this was held tonight. burgers tonight was transformed. all of tonight's proceeds go to the restaurant owners to help them rebuild. >> i'm in awe. i'm eternally grateful. thank you so much for your support and coming to help. leon: the restaurant was damaged in a fire a week ago today, the same day that it opened after being closed several months for remodeling. so far, no word on how much they made tonight. alison:
